|
 |
Ok so my PSU dies and decides to wipe out my mobo with it! So I buy a new PSU and mobo, put them both in and expected to have to do an XP repair but it did not blue screen or do anything it shouldnt do. XP loads and I install the new board drivers. I remove my old nvidia drivers since they were for the nforce chipset on my old board and install the latest detonator drivers for my 6800GT. Then I notice weird display issues including visual corruption on the desktop and split second flicker with a black screen. So I try playing a 3D accelerated game and the display is randomly messing up. So I quit out and check temps on the video card and they are fine so its not an overheating issue. So I leave it and eventually the screen flicks black and I mash the keys trying to get it back on and then I get a BSOD mentioning a Nvidia file in the error. I decide to uninstall the nvidia drivers completely and although I cannot play any games now, all the issues I had have disappeared. Can I rule out that there is nothing wrong with the video card and the problem is not hardware related? Maybe I shouild have done an XP repair after all. Anyone got any ideas please?
May the NFOrce be with you always.

I dont think you can rule out a hardware issue, I mean, its still a possibility. The issue could have been related to how your card handled in a certain res/refresh rate.. although you have removed the drivers and it now seems to be working.. is that using the exact same res/refresh rates?
I am just being cautious though, the issue does sound driver related, but you just cant ever be 100% certain in these cases.
What driver did you install? Im running the latest beta drivers and I havent seen any issues so far..

I had a similar problem a while ago with another PC. Changed some hardware in it from Socket A to Sockel 478 (AMD Athlon to P4). Only changed motherboard and CPU.
GFX were 6800GT, used to work fine on my Socket A setup as all other hardware. Anyway, starts the baby up with new mb and CPU, install windows. Works just fine. Install drivers and so on. Installs the nVidia drivers for the GFX... BAM Blue-screen and reboot before the setup even finishes. Then every time I got into windows it would work for anything between 10secs and 5mins and then give blue screen again.
Uninstalling the nVidia drivers made the PC completely stable. Changed back to the Socket A motherboard and CPU and it worked fine again with nVidia drivers installed.
Went on and tested the Sockel 478 mb and CPU with different hardware (hdd's, memory and so on) and all the time it would fail when install nVidia drivers. Put an ATi card in it and it worked flawlessly. Turns out all hardware works as intended EXCEPT when using that 6800GT on the sockel 478 mb for some very strange reason I have yet to figure out.
Not much of help but I would start with checking the PSU to make sure its ok.

I had 91.31 installed before the mobo and psu died and after I put the new board in, it said I should reinstall the video drivers after installing the chipset drivers for the new board. So I installed the new board drivers, rebooted, uninstalled Nvidia drivers, rebooted, installed the same drivers again and thats when I nioticed the issue occurring. I have not altered any refresh rates but use the same 1280x1024 desktop resolution that I had previously. The display corruption appears in all resolutions. Maybe I should just do a Windows XP repair. It can't make things any worse. :/

Thanks. I will try those! Downloading Z-Tweaked drivers 87.25 right now and will report back with results!

The PSU is a brand new 600W. The one I had before was also 600W. Its nice to hear from people who have had similar problems but its not nice to hear they never found a solution! lol

Ok tried the Z-Tweaked drivers 87.25 drivers and it has made no difference to my problem. I got a screenshot of the desktop with the Nvidia drivers installed.
The screen flickers black constantly and weird corruption appears in random formations.
Think I will do the XP repair. Will post back with results later.

Shit, that looks bad. Try underclocking the gfx just for the sake of it. Might solve it... Could be the ram overheating.

er
dude
changing a motherboard on a windows on the fly completely fries the driver stack
motherboard IS the computer
it is the base EVERYTHING is attached to
if that changes, every single smallest thing in your windows hardware config gets nuked driverwise and get redetected
more probably than not in the wrong order
there's a reason why it takes so long to install windows.. it detects stuff in an order to sort out the dependancies of each
windows aligns itself during the installation process by choosing the appropriate kernel and all sorts of donglydoo
only way to really get it done proper is to completely reinstall windows
that's not to say that the actual problem couldn't be something else
but it's a huge shock to the system
it'll never be completely stable or as fast again with so much conflicting information in it
a direct swap could work if the new board was identical in make and most bios settings (acpi is a biggie for the kernel)

But as I said, try underclocking the card.

Ok I give up! My dads pc isnt working! Everytime I goto setup Windows the pc shuts down and some annoying alarm starts going off until I disconnect the cable from the PSU at tha back! Which is probably an overheating issue. That occurs with both video cards so it must be the CPU. It has been stood for 6 months because he hasnt got a monitor for it at the moment. Ill get some thermal paste from work and sort that another day. Im going to take the 6800GT to work and try it tomorrow in another machine. Ive wasted enough goddamn time on this today! Ive stolen is FX5500 for while until I get something sorted! Aaaaarrrrrrrrgh!

Ok an update ...
The issue is still unresolved. I have tested the video card at work using the same drivers and the card is fine. I dont think the card is defective in any way. By process of elimination the only other things that could be causing the display corruption are the new PSU or the new motherboard I put into the machine. I am able to run my Dads FX5500 in my PC with the same drivers and with no issues so I dont think the problem is the motherboard. The big difference between his FX5500 and my 6800GT is the power requirements. Obviously my card needs a molex connector from the PSU so I am thinking maybe it is the new power supply. Either that has a fault or it could be the way I have connected up the psu connectors, since as well as hard drives and dvd drives, I have case fans and also the psu connector for the 6800GT. Any thoughts any one?

Can you pull the PSU from your dads machine to do a test? I would agree it could easily be the PSU..

Changed both the motherboard and PSU and the problem has gone! Nothing wrong with the video card whatsoever! You would think visual display corruption like I was experiencing could have been caused by nothing but a defective video card!

nasty. Nice to see that you have found your problem. Just goes to show that you need to buy a good quality PSU with a decent number of rails and plenty of amps. Why spend plenty on mobo, Gfx card, ram etc only to have it all blow up do to a crappy psu.
Hardware: Ryzen 3700x, B450 MSI Gaming Pro carbon AC, GTX1080, 32 GB 3200 Mhz cas 14, 256 EVO SSD, 1 TB EVO SSD and 4 TB HDD.
Console: xbox, wii and xbox 360
