HOLY SHIT!
Is "The Inquirer" a reliable newspaper or some sort of tabloid like the "Sun"?

But they already showed a lot of games running on the PS3's hardware didnt they? Like MGS4 and FF13, and they looked awesome. I really didnt understand that article either.

well I posted this link, because first I find the Inquirer to be pretty reliable... secondly I'm a dev, I know people who are or have friends with close links to devs working on PS3... and that includes major softs in Canada... yeah guess who. They say unofficial of course that the PS3 is a heap of junk, and a pain in the arse to develop for.
My own impression of E3 is that PS3 demos lacked object detail, and just didn't look anymore impressive than simalar titles on the 360.
Add to this the extra $200.00 cost of buying one of these things, and the lack of opportunity and support provide for indie devlopment.
Hey Sony got it really wrong with PSP (UMD's) I use mine for watching ripped movies.... and the Pebble anyone? and as for Blue Ray, well time will tell of course...

Well I m definitely buying a Wii at launch anyway, since its so cheap.
As for PS2, I ll have to get it at some point because of the games (although I m majorly pissed off at Sony for screwing up another console“s hardware),
unless all the devs relocate to X360.

hard to believe sony could fuck up so bad , they haven't even finalised the RSX , let alone shipped final dev kits runnnig real ps3 hardware. How in hell are they going to ship this thing in Nov? Xbox 1.5 huh? this thing sounds like Playstation 2.1 alpha
Time will tell I surpose

As much as I hate Sony and the PS3, the story in the Inquirer misrepresents things a bit.
The slide refers to "Local Memory" - "System Memory" is still high bandwidth. The "Local Memory" refers to special memory primarily read by the SPU, not the Cell... Normally, the Cell only WRITES to this memory, and it's low bandwidth (The SPU has all the bandwidth needed and the Cell does not need to read much, if anything from this memory)
So it's a non-issue, really. The PS3 has plenty of reasons for people to shun them, without red herrings like this one to stink it up worse. DRM, Shoving BluRay down consumers' throats, forcing more expensive equipment and the ridiculous statements made by Sony execs as they run the hype up to launch are all reasons to steer clear and stick with the PS2.

Just so everyone knows, this rumor got trashed by sony Everything the guys said was based on the idea of the spu reading from system memory. So all his speculation is wrong.
Quote: | (Update: The misunderstanding evident in the linked story relates to the distinction between local video memory and local system memory. The slow read speed under discussion is indicative of the feature's lack of utility. This is even reflected on the slide's statement: "No, this isn't a typo ..." A contact at Sony confirmed this telling me, "Again I cannot imagine a situation where you have any SPU reading from the RSX local memory." Nothing to see here, folks.) |
