Anyone have a guide to building a NAS using basic off-the-shelf components?
I'm trying to build a NAS from old parts that being laying around.
Need the recommendation of a secure free OS with small footprint so that I can maximise the storage space.
Use Linux and mdadm for a softraid solution, and you have to install some kind of server so other pc's can connect to the raid, like a samba or ftp server. A samba server is common among commercial NAS.
I don't know about this FreeNAS Server. After reading the article i find it rather useless because of the limitation. It's easy to install a linux distribution on your own and setup mdadm and samba, and it's way more flexible, in case you need some more features, you can always install gl later

One limitation of the software is the lack of granularity in setting access rights to shares. The local user authentication model is an all-or-nothing affair. You can't set some users to be read-only or others to only have access to certain shares. Once a user is authenticated, he has full access to all the shared storage.
