Director Kevin Smith has confirmed plans to make a sequel to his 1999 cult classic film, Dogma. The announcement follows a year-long celebration of the original film’s 25th anniversary and his successful reacquisition of the rights. Smith is now actively developing the script for the highly anticipated follow-up.
Smith spent 2024 promoting a new 4K release and hosting sold-out theater screenings for Dogma. The experience, he says, allowed him to reconnect with the film away from its original controversial launch. He described the anniversary tour as a joyful rediscovery.
According to Smith, the sequel will serve as a thematic companion piece. The original film dealt with a loss of faith from a perspective of belief. Now, Smith approaches the subject from the opposite angle, having fully left his Catholic faith behind. This new filter will shape a distinct story.
Cast, Plot, and the Practicalities of a Legacy Sequel
While the original starred Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, and Alan Rickman, the new film will primarily feature a fresh cast. Smith acknowledges the practical reality. Affleck and Damon now run their own studio and have major commitments.
The director confirms the original cast members are welcome to return in smaller roles. The story, however, requires a new ensemble. Smith has already written a strong beginning, noting the plot will not solely rely on nostalgia to succeed.
The project is currently on a temporary hold. Smith paused writing to begin work on another, unrelated period piece screenplay. He intends to return to the Dogma sequel after completing this other “classier” project.
The confirmation of Dogma 2 marks a major victory for Smith and his dedicated fanbase, turning a long-held dream into an imminent cinematic reality. This sequel promises to explore modern faith with the same sharp, comedic voice that made the original a landmark film.
