The core focus seems to have been cut-scenes, graphics, voice acting: superficial stuff that a small dev normally shouldn't focus on for a RPG. Though they absolutely made a commercial success because they made a cookie cutter RPG which appeals to the masses but for most veterans (a far smaller group of course) its just shit. if you look on dedicated RPG forums, MANY people there are not too impressed.

I am disappointed because i loved the intro and i really liked the combat and graphics, but the "comedy", characters, the story, the focus on long cut scenes with cringe character interactions, jesus chist, i have no idea how people can stand it. Also its just overall non immersive, like if you camp when you are in a large underground area you are suddenly camping in a forest. they did not care about attention to detail, like at all.

Their first game, is way, way ahead of BG3, in MANY ways (where it matters, like attention to details, immersion), and that was with like 1% of the budget and with far less people.

So the "oh, give them a break, its indie, they cant do that" is total BS. they just didnt give a shit since it worked for DoS, they focused on the more superficial stuff like graphics, cutscenes instead.

I disagree games with alot of higher budget and dev time like Starfield (not being a crpg i know)are far worse and by a supposedly huge legendary studio.

Attention to detail is ofc a good thing but everything has its limits.
The superficial stuff you mention aren't bad things.
BG3 is a step up from DOS 2 and maybe their next game will be betetr because they learned some lessons from it.

I remember how Sven talked about the cube that you get with shadowheart and what an headache it was to not make it break the game. "What happens if you kill shadowheart and take the cube? What if you dont take it? What if you throw it away etc." They had to kind of totally focus on this matter and didnt except it being such a headache.

You might disagree but there are many good CRPGS like Rogue Trader, Wrath of the Righteous, Solasta (soon Solasta 2) or little "gems" devs still work on like Black Geyser. Everyone of them has positives and negatives. You cant just except it to be perfect and high fidelity and cater to a niche audience. Things take time. At least (imo) their games aren't getting worse but better even if its little by little)

^ I agree with @vurt, but these are good points.

Think the issue is with personal flavor and expectations of what COULD or MIGHT have been if you integrated in a (single) modern game everything you loved in other games.

Maybe unrealistic(?) expectations of having the whole package in one, eh?

Problem is, this is inherently human - to evolve and expect MORE, letting the imagination build those wholesome packages of bits and pieces that you like...

50 years ago, when I played Baldur's Gate 2, I expected and hoped that, ONE DAY, a Baldur's Gate game will be so immersive, detailed and complex, that it would be in first person and even have toilet paper in it... (see Bethesda games).

On a side note, which games do you like that offer all that you like?

RDR2, Alien Isolation, Pillars of Eternity 2

I played a few hours of RDR2, I never played Alien Iso at all, and I loved Pillars 1 and then played few hours of Pillars 2.

People have different taste. I recently had an itch for open world racing game, I went and installed The Crew, and I had plenty of fun with it. Then AC Rally dropped out of nowhere, and I completely abandoned The Crew and I ended spending all my free time in ACR. It's completely bare bones game, four stages in total. They're not even long by rally standards, yet they offer more detail than whole world of The Crew.
