Managed to finish this the other day, long story short: it's okay. There is enjoyment to be had here, especially on the first map, I think that's where the quality peaks. After that it can be a drag and you can definitely notice all the cut content that was planned.

First area you can talk to the protectorate faction and even do quests for them, after that they're automatically an enemy faction. They don't even have a reputation system like the other factions and will shoot on sight apart from very rare encounters where dialogue is possible and is usually followed by combat.

Companions are... alright. There is just one really annoying one or two that constantly judge and guilt you no matter what you do but you can ditch them and stick with the rest. Or tell them to go void themselves. At least they allow you to be mean which cannoy be said with most modern RPG's.

2 skill points per level with the cap at 30 seems a bit too stingy to me, this is a game that you'll probably play twice at the very most.
The game is thick with dialogue and some of it is alright and some you'll wish they can get to the point and stop with the jargon.

Gunplay is surprisingly good for a game of this genre, exploration is rewarding with smaller maps but dense with hand made details and environmental story telling (the classic dead bodies with notes Laughing)
I'll take this over undending prodedural vomit anyday of the week.

as an isodemo I can't really complain Laughing

FFS, they did the first map/area bait and switch... AGAIN?!
That's 3 times between both outer worlds games and Avowed Laughing
Well, I guess if it helps pulling a fast one on sub-retarded game journos that don't even bother finishing a game for a review then good for them.
Reality is more than likely they had to cut down on the rest of the game because microsoft mandated it/closed the money faucet on them.

First act being the best is a common strategy because most consumers don't finish bought games so devs/producers put less effort in the rest of the game.

Problem is, even if nuObsidian had all the money in the world to add all the features that they want, their art direction, writing and UI would still be painfully average and cartoonish on account of their current developers/designers/writers being inept. With Sawyer reduced to a sidelined senior role and with Avellone banished, there's no one left in there who's capable of producing engaging material anymore.

Tim and Leonard don't work there anymore? The first game was their baby.

They were brilliant minds and I'll always be grateful for their many quality contributions over the years, but to me, it's quite evident that they lost their spark and were progressively incorporated by the modern industry with its mainstream visions and neutered creativity. Then again, they're both in their 60s so this is merely the natural trajectory of things. Not many projects that are "from the creators of [insert great products from decades ago]" give the desired results sadly, and The Outer Worlds makes no exception in my opinion. Still, I genuinely hope they can prove me wrong in the future Razz

Tim Cain hasn't lost anything (yet):

He still contributes to the industry in more ways than others via his channel on YT: https://www.youtube.com/@CainOnGames/videos

The fact that he's in his 60/70/80s should be a bonus. Any 'old' man that has created, lived and breathed videogame masterpieces will always have something relevant to say.

Unless dementia kicks in.

I think that big problem with nuObsidian is how Bethesda's Fallout poisoned their production. The Outer World 1 wanted to be Fallout killer but took all the worst things from Fallout 3 and Fallout 4. And like Ixi noticed and I've read from some of Sawyer and Avellone blogs and media posts both were pretty much the breakers for some of the more retarded ideas.

I'd only bring The Outer Worlds and Fallout in the same sentence only to point out that they worlds apart.

Who said that TOW wanted to be a Fallout killer?

Why would that be?

No one has anything to gain from this.

Fallout is Fallout and TOW is... a different, 'colorful' thing.

Literaly in this trailer they boast they were creators of the best received Fallouts. The gameplay is similar to Fallout 3/NV/4. The setting is different but the underlying structure isn't.
