Thats subjective, don't say it as objective.
I have never followed a build, in PoE1 or PoE2, (most my fun is figuring it out, it would ruin the point of the game to me) and all my guys make it in endgame fine.
Sure, I myself do the tweaking, and adjusting as I go vs just slapping in what a guide tells me that someone else just did that work for you in.
But endgame is totally doable without needing to follow a guide. Maybe I am just Ok at making builds, maybe you are just bad at it. Not sure. But to say 'you won't get far into endgame' is false. I have about a dozen times over the two games.
Is it hard if you are not good at making builds, or don't like spending time testing gem combos and gear? Sure. That's what guides are for, the people that dont want to do that 1/3 of the gameplay that is intended (test combos of gems and gear), and want someone else to first so they can follow it.
I see it as this game is 'hardmode' of APRGs. So what would you expect?

That's totally fine. I don't have any issue with people using guides. More power to them.
But don't shit on the games mechanics for its intended audience, because you are not in that audience.
And case in point, I DID figure that out. It tells you it in the extended tooltip (of either the raging spirits, or the flame spells).
I think the flame spells tells you, because flaming zombies,and skeletons work too.
just like spark can be cast though flamewall to get extra damage, it has a red tint extra on the spark. it outright tells you that.
Mix raging spirits, with the one that makes the minions its on take fire damage over time, and the one that makes minion explode on death. And you got automatic skull grenades. The gems tell you what they do, and what they can add/proc on others. You job (or the guides) is to work out how to combine what it tells you into what you want.
Like that one above, I had "explodes on death" but skulls took too long to die, so found the gem that said "They take DoT damage on themselves" and thought: That would kill them quicker, so more boom-boom per minute.

That Flamewall thing works with ALL projectiles and it does say so in the skill video if i remember correctly.

Now that you said it, your right. It says it on the fire gem.
And all projectiles get it. I just usually focus on minion builds, so forgot it said projectiles too.
Much like saying: Good luck figuring out poison cloud can be exploded with flaming enemies in it. When gas clouds tab tells you that and in the video hover for it.
