I finished and it devolves quickly into generic mediocrity with very few redeeming qualities.
The story is Nier from Temu, predictable and without any philosophical undertones.
They just sold an ass and people took sides, on one the "menly" gamers on the other the journalists and woke, free advertisement through division and outrage. Where have I seen that before?
I think a good rule is that if you change the protagonist into something ugly and it loses all appeal, then it's not a very good game.

Yeah, I also won't play it because it is, to this day, an unoptimized piece of shit that the square-enix and platinum never fixed.
They'll eventually reboomaster/make it so maybe by that time.
Pretty sure it ran at 90FPS on the Deck when I had it, how bad can it be on a desktop?

Not quite. It runs mostly 4k@60 fps at my antient RTX3060, but there are places like desert, some places in the forest or in the city that have significant frame drops to even sub 30 values.
So technically it is not horrible, but for the game from 2017, it runs rather poor, and framerate drops are annoying.
The game was technically challenged from the get go, performance issues, crappy controls, dated graphics.
It didn't sell well enough for Square Enix to care. Despite all the issues, NieR: Automata is one of my most beloved games and I think people are missing out on not playing it.

It wasn't performance wise, it was graphics wise. Didn't you have to install Special K or something just to make it look mildly decent? Or I might be imagining that.
