In a toss up between this and Star Citizen, I have to wonder which was the poorer choice of investment on my part. SC at least has the entertainment factor of how colossal their fuckup is.

depends Very Happy as for this one i really enjoyed some old beta of Exanima so if it ends up just by releasing Exanima v1.0 soon-ish I am fine with it
... as for Star Citizen ... not really my genre so have no clue , but its fascinating to watch

Why not make a new thread for Exanima?
How would one even find this thread here when looking for Exanima?

imo it would be better to just add exanima to title as Exanima is basically prelude to SG and overall part of one project

Exanima still alive possibly getting to v1.0 full release soon-ish

Right now we're looking at a closed beta release today or tomorrow. The full release will hopefully be fairly close behind.

The work behind this update was a quite a detour for Exanima, focusing on very complex systems designed to support a much larger game world. With this seriously major hurdle behind us I can safely say we won't have any more long waits between updates, and we have a lot of very significant features and content lined up for the near future.

In response to the OP, we have always been very reluctant to show anything before we release. We think it's much better to discover them in game than go in knowing what to expect, and we're generally not fond of building up hype. We have been quite secretive about new content for this reason even with the small group of closed beta testers.

Oh man, it's finally coming! I played through all the content of the Early Access and it's awesome. I've been waiting for an update for over a year now.

looking at the changelog , lot of work towards the systems that might seem redundant for Exanima but will probably be fully utilized in SG

The companion is very useful. He stepped in front of me as I was swinging. I hit him in the neck with my axe and instantly killed him. Laughing
I want to Exanima so much, but I don't think I have the strength to do it in the game's current state. They still haven't fixed the movement/controls and the game feels even more brutal now. I guess I'll wait for the full release, if that will ever happen.

I wouldn't say broken, but it's far from polished (assuming it won't remain like this). But keep in mind that you are talking about a community that can tolerate a developer that made a Kickstarter campaign for Sui Generis. Then has decided to make another game before that. This whole story has started almost 6 years ago. Smile

The game was always extremely challenging, especially in the later areas. You can rarely heal, you can't manually save and the combat has some random elements that can turn a good fight into a disaster. Before you could start as a knight (I'm not sure if you can anymore), which was a bit overkill since you had way too much armor for the game's beginning. Now you are pretty much naked and the first level barely provides any defensive items (loot in chests is randomly generated as well). In contrast enemies are pretty efficient, they just hit you over the hand with a plank and you lose good chunks of hp that you will not be able to recover for a long time. The movement/controls haven't improved one bit and the new stability feature doesn't always work as intended. You get stuck into objects and your character goes animation crazy while enemies can take free hits at you.
I love the game, it's very innovative and extremely atmospheric. But some the core elements still need some serious work.
Maybe I'm just rusty, it takes a bit to get used to the movement and implicitly the combat system. The patch is more like a precursor for future updates. And as someone who went through all the content in 2016-2017, I don't feel compelled to start all over.

yeah, this was something they really nailed. it did take me around 10 minutes to be 100% comfortable with it and another 10 minutes to get good at it, so longer than usual.. Fighting was very hard at first but also very fair and extremely fun and most of all rewarding.

Not sure which version that was, but probably the one before this.

It’s extremely difficult for me not to praise this game for what it’s trying to achieve, yet, in an ironic twist it’s difficult to recommend it as well. Between the game’s slow development, some persisting issues and the burning desire to see the final version, Exanima is an exercise in frustration. I’m eagerly waiting for that distant day when Exanima is going to be released so I can tell the world why this is the action RPG we have been waiting for.

So, there might be a chance for this game to come out before Star Citizen. Laughing

Haha yeah, it took them ~7 years to reach the 0.7 version of the prelude to the real game, I think it's safe to say that Sui Generis is basically a mythological beast. Our best hope at the moment indeed is a polished Exanima 1.0 that doesn't play like an Early Accessian Frankenstein Razz

We do still have some big items on our roadmap, like multiplayer and to a lesser extent ranged combat, but none of that is needed to finally start making Exanima feel like a complete game with purpose and structure, to take advantage of the foundations we've been building and improving.

i wish they would just make a real roguelike honestly Laughing the base game is honestly pretty fucking dull, static as hell.

Isn't this supposed to be a prototype for the "real" game they want to develop in the future anyhow? I think they said something like that. I'm glad I never caved in and didnt buy this.

i dont know how many dollars that is

but i played this shit for 40 or so hours, but mostly as a battler, not as an RPG
the atmosphere is great but there's not nearly enough substance as an RPG/dungeon crawler

it is worth it if you enjoy unique physics combat, but i'd not buy it if you wanted a good dungeon crawler
