Filmmaker Michael Mann has confirmed that “Heat 2” is set to be his next movie.

The director appeared on stage at Deadline’s Contenders event over the weekend in London and was asked whether the novel adaptation would be his next screenwork.

Mann reportedly responded: “Yes. Meg Gardiner and myself wrote the novel Heat 2, which came out right when we were shooting Ferrari. It did very well. I plan to shoot that next.”

That marks a slight change from Mann’s comments on the matter back in late August when he seemed less certain about it being made as he advised Variety: “I want to make it. But if I don’t, I won’t be incomplete.” Now though we have a proper confirmation it’s happening and will be his next film.

Earlier this year came reports that Adam Driver was in talks to play the young Neil McCauley (Robert DeNiro’s role in the 1995 original). Mann reportedly dodged the casting question this weekend saying “we don’t talk about that yet” before discussing his great working relationship with the actor.

“Heat 2” was published as a novel last year serving as both a prequel and sequel to the events of the feature.

The story jumps between two time periods, the first following Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer’s role) as he tries to evade LAPD and Detective Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino’s role) following the events of the original film.

The second takes us back to Chicago in 1988 when McCauley, Shiherlis, and their high-line crew took scores on the West Coast, the US-Mexican border, and now in Chicago.

Hanna, meanwhile, is cutting his teeth as a rising star in the Chicago police department chasing an ultraviolent gang of home invaders. The fallout from those past events causes unexpected repercussions in the present.

heat is good but not that masterpiece many people want it to be.
without the famous street shooting scenes it would have never been so popular. everything before that scene was good, and everything which came after was bad in my opinion, i didn't like the ending at all.

these days scenes like this are normal, there are so many bankrobbery movies by now which do the action scenes just as good or better.
so i guess people will mostly just watch it because of the name and memberberries. hope im wrong and we will get a awesome movie with a better ending then the last one.
