7.5/10 from me! Really funny for 80% of the movie, the ending was the worst part, not because of the patriarchy=bad (honestly the movie was making fun of both sides equally) but because they squeezed all the character development into a couple monologues one after another.
Definitely not a movie for kids.
I also like 4th wall breaking and matrix parodies here and there xD
Not at all the review I expected. I thought it would be total woke garbage, now I am curious.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."
I was surprised, too. The wokeness in this is clearly (to me) overdone on purpose. I think `patriarchy` is said 20 times in 5 minutes at one point in the movie
I think it's the parody of how it is inherent to 'barbie' universe since barbie toys' was made. Beautiful sexy successful doctor/lawyer/vet/movie star (all at once) Girlie girls barbie and a mute 'milktoast' man is baked into the toy lines canon.
Barbie gets all the toys, and houses, and cars and exciting jobs. Ken is there only because girls want beautiful barbie to have 'a man' to story tell with as her boyfriend that shadows her. He's never had a job, a mansion house, or anything in the toy line. He's just 'there' to fill the man role.
It's a toy for little kids to play fantasy with, it doesn't matter it has no bigger message.
The movie is mocking and having fun with that fact, and most people that say its woke miss that. It is making fun of 'woke' and patriarchy in a silly toy line for silly reasons, because of the absurdity that is 'barbie world'. Just it does it in such a way they take it as evidence of it.
I say anyone that takes away woke patriarchy message and upset about it, from a toy line made for a little girls, that the character has every successful job known to man all at once, owns 3 mansions, a yacht, a private island (it was a playset of hers too) and every hot sports car for each decade. Is trying too hard to find that message to be upset about it. As the whole concept of barbie is silly overblown ridiculous fantasy trope of that very concept to start with.
Is it a good movie? Meh..forgettable. But is it an evil movie? No. its a silly overboard movie about an overboard caricature of a kids fantasyland toyset that itself dripped in stereotypes of and gender glorifying. Now made for people that grew up with barbie toys but want a bit of bite, snarky, and innuendo in their humor as an adult.
let's go watch the GI Joe cartoon for boys and be upset about the clear disrespect and offensive caricatures of soldiers that bravely fought for us in wars, and how it prompts toxic masculinity thru violence while we are at it, I guess.

Are there people that shy away from these subjects? Why? Sounds like 1700s orthodox catholic shame of 'taboo' subjects to me to not.
If the kid asks teach them...You dont need to whip out a Porn movie, but explaining what they are is a simple innocent explanation. They already have one of those, knowing the other exists is no big horror.

I asked factiously. I find it silly no matter what piece of land divided by invisible lines you stand on to shy away and frown on explaining to your kids what things are, when they have one of those things. Simply because of tradition of "those are naughty bits, we do not discuss these things".
Because in the end, despite 1000's of years of "If we dont tell them they won't use them" mentality. How has that worked out?
To me it's the same as telling them masterbation is evil and we dont speak of such things. They just figure out what it is by trial and error eventually. Refusing to explain it to them just makes them MORE curious.
It's not that I dont fathom other nations and cultures do it differently. It's that I find it archaically silly to do it that way regardless of what flag you live under.
Because kids and teens, will be kids and teens regardless of where they live and how much you dont want them to be.

BRUSSELS -- A series of school arsons in Belgium believed to be connected to a controversial school program in some parts of the country is prompting authorities to strengthen their police response.
Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden on Friday called for a halt to the attacks in the French-speaking Wallonia region hours after another school was set on fire, the sixth in the Charleroi area since the start of the week.
Prime minister Alexander De Croo later told a press conference that he has asked the body in charge of processing intelligence on terror, extremism and radicalization to analyze the situation.
The Evras program is described as a tool designed to help children and teenagers develop their relational and sexual lives. This school year, some 100,000 pupils in the Wallonia-Brussels federation ages 11-12 and 15-16 will have to attend two sessions, for a total of four hours of training.
The program had been around and available all age groups for years but was not compulsory before this school year.
De Croo said that sexual education has been provided in Belgium for half a century and warned that the country will not take steps backwards.
In addition to the arsons, protests gathering a few hundred people have also been organized in Brussels. Several Islamic groups have also condemned the program in a joint statement over fears it will favor the “hypersexualization" of children while rumors about the nature of Evras spread on the Internet.
There must have been a door there in the wall, when I came in.
Truly gone fishing.
Watched it now that it has been released to download and I have to say I'm not really in the camp of those that think it's a parody with wokeness overdone on purpose.
It's no surprise that critic interpretations are so divided - because both sides are kind of right and also kind of wrong.
The movie is strange mix of innocent silly and making fun of stereotypes on the one hand and serious, earnestly woke brainwashing on the other. Very schizophrenic.
When it is the former the movie was fun, when it is the latter I could only shake my head.
This is reflected in my score, which I decided will be 5/10.

first of all, movie is rated pg 13, by that age kids already know everything all by themselves
PG13 doesn't mean only over 13, it means kids under 13 need parental guidance while watching it. What the PG stands for.
And of course most kids over 13 know that stuff already. WHY it has 13 as the age (Kids under 13, need parental guidance: PG 13)

second, if a parent brings a younger kid or puts this movie at home then he's a retard regardless of borders
I am a retard then I guess, I didn't take them to see this. But let them play whatever games they want, and watch whatever they want. It's about kids knowing and talking to them when appropriate and open communication, you know. A good parent. They turned out fine normal well adjusted kids.
Not just "Hide everything from them I am uncomfortable talking to them about".
I played GTA5 with my son at 12 years old because he wanted 'to play my game', and we both got a giggle out of him picking up a hooker not knowing what it was. So I explained what they was doing. Scarred for life I guess
I myself see it saying "I dont want my children exposed to adult but otherwise ordinary things" really is "I dont want to be assed to talk and educate my kids on it until they are old enough to know from strangers anyway. Taboo things are spooooky for kids. I mean take genitals! Freaky stuff there. And sex? The thing we did to make them? If we tell them it exists..they may do it!" (sarcasm there)
Hiding stuff from kids, has never once stopped them learning about it (and usually wrong info) from strangers, or other kids.
If Barbie is too 'spicy' for yours kids. I'm surprised your Amish community was ok with you all going to a movie to start with.

bruh whats amish has to do anything with it? there is that murican ignorance again...
this is not rocket science, there are ratings in place just so everyone knows what is apropiate for what age.
PG-13 "Parental Guidance: Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13 to 15.
read that? MAY BE INAPPROPRIATE. so if u put a pg13 movie to a sub 13 kid ur a fucking moron of a parent.
gta5 is M for mature, 17 and up, yeah ur a great parent. and u even laughed when he picked up a hooker just stop it, u are as worst as the amish.
u can be progressive and "modern" all u want, u do what u want and think its best. a kid is a kid, very easily influenced. if he can believe there is santa clause, he can know about the other shit later, if he asks sure, but probably wont, as long as ur a good parent a kid will never need to ask such questions.
Yes. You just started my point "MAY be'. Not saying all kids should see it. Case by case basis. Some kids could see it and not give it a second thought. Some will be shocked and confused because they are sheltered from 'those taboo anatomy parts' topics.
My son playing a screen full of pixel fake people, doing a silly thing in a fake world he understands is a parody of life and not real life, and I explained to him what it was when he asked why the car was wiggling when she got in, and why some men do it..He's fine. He can handle it. Teach them to understand things in context and they can gain knowledge on LOTS of things without 'scaring them'.
Children are a lot smarter, and have more plasticity of mind that most people give them credit for. Like they forgot they was a child at one time and what it was like.
And a kid is only very easily influenced if it doesnt know/isnt taught better.
And I think from my view, if you are a good parent they WILL ask those questions as they feel comfortable and open enough to come to you vs asking other kids on the playground and getting it all mixed up and wrong.
Because them not asking you, doesn't mean they are not asking. They are just asking other people as you have shown to them that you are not the one to ask. My kids asked me nearly every 'adult' question growing up. As I did not make them feel shame for being curious. And they knew that I would be honest with them and explain it to them in a understandable and neutral way.
And they are normal ass adults now. Not some fucked up, deviant hoodlums. For example like him learning what the oldest profession is the world is.
And I 100% guarantee you if they are not asking you those questions around the average time playground talks on it starts. They are asking SOMEONE, it's just not you. Most parents learn their kids know about 'something' they didn't want them to know yet, years before they realized their kids knew it.
You are not protecting them from knowing about it, you are just sheltering them from knowing what you know about it. If you think kids don't discuss things parents shy away from. Go ask a school teacher what she overheads on the playground.
There is the sentiment: Kids can learn about life from their parents, or by random trial and error with strangers. The choice is up to the parents of who ends up teaching their kids.

I'll just leave this:
You dont dictate when the appropriate time to learn it is, their curiosity does. And if you dont teach them, they will learn it from somewhere.
If your kids hears the word 'penis' or 'cock' at school and doesn't ask you or knows asking you will get defected with "You are too young to know about that". You can bet he's going to who he can trust and IS comfortable with (his friends) to learn it. As the more taboo you make it, the more they want to find out what the forbidden things is. Been that way for 1000's of years.
Not saying my way is the 'right' way. Just that that is the way it works. How you handle it is your own family prerogative. Just be aware of the mechanics of it. And no amount of you not wanting them to know controls how much they know, unless you lock them in the house 24/7.

its always extreme with u, dictate that, amish that, where did i said this? this is my last post about this shit cuz u always write long fucking posts about much nothing and ur still going and i already said what i had to say. kids will not grow serial killers and pedophiles if u dont teach them about jacking off at age of 7, just calm down. and him learning from other people probably for the best in many cases, parents are dumb people, hence in ur example
americans should be the last people on earth to teach others about parenting, google why americans are perceived as dumb, arrogant, rude, obnoxious people by the rest of the world, thats the 'kids' ur parenting and grow up to be
You didn't say all that. I did. No where do you say it, was was being cheeky.
And americans should be the last people on earth to teach others, maybe, probably, but wherever you live should be the last place to judge other countries people, as you stereotype them all as the same homogeneous stereotype based on the only one you know about them.
Why would I have to google why americans are seen as dumb. I live here and see them everyday in person And it doesn't seem the parenting is unique to us. At least one set of parents I know are there where you are raise one that was arrogant, rude, obnoxious to the world.

watched to see all the fuzz was about, the movie sucks
It's targeted at people over 20 (and 30) that still enjoy barbie world...so....yea. Gonna suck. Superficial vapid bubble gum movie riding on "The set is SOO barbie pink! oooh the nostalgia of toys that color pink as a kid."
It's not 100% BAD for what it is, but that's only because the bar for 'depth in a barbie movie' is so low.
Sort of like saying they made "Kardashians the Movie" and it sucks. Sort of a given it sucks, unless that paper plate deep vibe, is your specific thing to start with you'd pay $20 to go see.
