Death Stranding's story felt rather complete all things considered, though Kojimen's imagination is wild and I'm confident he'll find an incredibly ridiculous yet somewhat plausible way to reinvent the bizarre logic behind the game.
I was ready to get on the meme train but I had a genuinely good time with it, a flawed yet very mesmerizing and unique experience. It gave its absolute best when it offered minimal help and left you alone and unprotected against the environment (playing it offline amplified that sensation), you knew that you could only count on your own strategy and that failure could hide everywhere, making each trip feel tense and ultimately rewarding. And since building roads was a titanic task for a single man, vehicles weren't completely safe either. Time to fly now, Sam!

I've had this in my backlog for quite a while and decided to install it the other day.
I've just played ~2 hours so far but it's seriously one of the weirdest games I've played. I only have a veeery vague idea what's going on and I'm not sure if I think the game is good or not. It's just too weird at the moment. The walking can be a bit tedious as well. Weird weird game coming from a very imaginative creator.

I'd say stick with it. Decided to buy it for a good offer (20€ back in 2020) but didn't touch it. I started playing it just for 20 minute streaks while I was away, living outside my city, working for a logistics corporation. Suffice to say, I felt very alienated while playing it because, well... logistics and playing a game where you deliver packages felt a lil bit Freudian More or less, 2hrs tops.
Left it for a good while, came back to where I belong, started a new business as an owner, things got brighter around me and decided to keep playing after finishing Cyberpunk 1.5.
One of the best gaming experiences ever. Trust me, it's that good.

To me, its like beer. And I dont like beer. But everyone's that does like beer (no malice towards it or those who love it, I just dont like it) keep telling me I need to give it more of a chance with things like:
"No no you need to stick with it, it's a complex beer with notes you become aware of after becoming familiar with it" or "You just haven't had a good beer, you try one crappy one and say they all suck" or "Here try this one, it tastes nothing like beer, with it's hints of applewood and aged dried fruit".
When in the end, I have been asked to try about 100 beers. And to me it's just 97% "beer" flavor with a very vague note of whatever make it 'that' beer.
How this game is to me. If you love it awesome, enjoy the shit out of it, I envy you. But no matter how many time I watched friends play it, or ask me to play it, or show me different stages of it past the 'QWOP with packages' to show me its not all that. Its still just the 'beer' flavor that I dont like to start with
I think its I dont like games with a story so I spam spacebar and try to skip/ignore it, and I cannot stand endless fetch quests as the time sink in FPS/Third Person games. So it's that I notice that 97% flavor with 'notes of applewood and aged dried fruit' as the barely whiff of accent flavors added on top as game features.

It's not about the "beer" flavour, it's about how the beer is made. And it's a hell of a factory. It feels worth to build a road, it feels awesome to reach a generator when your helpful high-mountain skeleton gets out of juice, it feels wholesome to be able to build a safehouse at the perfect spot in the middle of a rugged mountain while your truck is about to get corroded just to reach the First prepper. It feels like a real life work sometimes, and it surely drags a bit from x cutscene to y cutscene, but once you get the hang of it it's so satisfying and accomplished... and the story starts to develop, and you get familiar with Mads character, and you start to hate/love your antagonists, to care about your allies, and it feels so lively...
Anyway, as you said DXWarlock, if you "dont like games with a story so I spam spacebar and try to skip/ignore it" maybe this game isn't for you but the mechanics are excellent and to me, nothing was done like it until DS.

The directors cut wasn't given away? It was just the original. DC was on sale on there for 32

DC Content is just full of little touches, minor extra cutscenes and an extra mission alongside some buildable content, I don't know if some of the DC's QoL changes were added onto the Standard too but it's nothing that is truly significant.

you absolutely get the full experience without the DC content but it does add some nice quality of life, mini games and a few new minor cutscenes.
i honestly wouldn't worry about it too much, i played the original and had a blast. it's a very very complete package albeit kojima bullshit but hey the gameplay is a lot of fun.

Pho08 and Vurt asked about the 3 add-ons, not for DC. I repeat myself but that's just Wallpapers, Soundtrack and the Artbook.
And for the DC when I first started the game it told me I got power glove, suit and some other stuff but where are they supposed to be? The private locker is empty. Tho I am still in the beginning and just built my first mailbox and don't know if the items won't come after some later part of the game. But now I can see signs, ladders and ropes put by other players so at least I know the "illegal free DC" has online.

I tried to play the game, didn't mind the gameplay, thought it was fun but the fucking hours of cutscenes, fucking christ. Go make a fucking movie if that's what you wanna do.

Oddly enough, cutscenes don't really bother me as long as their direction is competent and are kept separated from the actual action/gameplay loop, which is what Death Stranding does. What typically annoys me is the tendency to merge cutscenes and actual gameplay through automatized movements taking control away from you all the time in order to provide seamless cinederpmatic moments, something that's present in most AAA action titles released these days. It's either that kind of formula or the standard checklist-oriented open-world Ubibusywork®, with very few exceptions.
