Also, what the fuck is the point of buying the 256 or 512gb version when you can just replace the eMMC with an NVMe for the fraction of the price?

Is that the only difference though? The SSD?

Apparently - yes. At least between the 256 and 512gb versions. And from what I've heard - warranty is not void if you replace the "disk" by yourself, unless you break something of course.

You don't even need that, the difference between playing on internal memory vs microSD is barely anything.

I bought the 256GB version and put a 512GB SD in it. Since I saw the difference first hand, I decided not to even bother with replacing the drive.

No difference between the 64 and 256 version when it comes to hardware, 512 has etched glass antiglare screen. Opinions about it are varied. I personally disliked it so I scalped my Deck in May and queued again for a 64gb version.

I bought Ni No Kuni on the Switch a while ago and gave up because it ran like shit and looked like old arse.
On the Deck, the difference is night and day. So smooth and detailed. Max details + better controls too.
I've finished 4 more games in the past week. I love it!

The tiny screen is fine for certain games. I started Persona 4 tonight, it's perfect for it. But a game like RDR2, A Plague Tale, Mankind Divided or Cyberpunk would be awful. There's too much detail and you'd miss a lot of stuff.
Anyone remember the wild life hunting in RDR2? That sort of thing would be a nightmare on the Deck. Finding some of those birds would be like 'hunt for the red pixel'. Unless you don't have a gaming PC for your Steam games, I wouldn't squander great experiences on a handheld. Using A Plague Tale as an example again (Requiem) - playing at 30FPS with reduced detail at a low res is a waste of such a beautiful game.

All I want is games running faster. Many good ones are *just* on the cusp of running well. Like a Dragon is one I'd have to play at 40hz/40FPS, but I'd rather not.
Neon wrote: | Inter, are there any tutorials for Steam Deck beginners that you used and vouch for? There are a shit ton of them on YT, but I can't verify if they're any decent or not.
I'll be mainly using it for older games and emulation etc. |
Not really, a friend got a Deck at the same time and we just kept finding new stuff and telling each other. It's super simple though. Linux is enough like Windows these days, ImmOOO, and Valve have simplified a lot of things. What I think would be most helpful to learn about:
- How to enable Proton experimental (used for 'unsupported' games, launchers and mods)
- Shortcuts, like being able to open the keyboard at any time
- Enabling other people's controller profiles in games (highly useful!) and creating your own
- Jumping between desktop mode and gaming mode. And while a mouse + KB is easier, I'd also recommend getting used to the Deck touchpads for controlling the cursor. I've been in hotels, airports etc where I don't have those things handy, so it pays to be able to do it efficiently with what's built in
- For roms, all I did was install EmuDeck. Then I put the games in the generated roms folder. Everything else is configured and automated

One other thing, I follow these channels:
https://www.youtube.com/@SteamDeckGaming
https://www.youtube.com/@DeckWizard
https://www.youtube.com/@pcgamingit
Every day they've got different games running on the Deck, so you get a really good idea of what runs well without having to download and test every game you own. They test new releases fairly quickly as well as emulation. You can also go through their old videos to create a sort of 'Deck backlog' in preparation for later.
There's another channel called Maxgamestech or something, but he puts 40hz on a lot of games that run well at 60hz. It's so dumb. If it works at 60, it'll work at 40, I don't get it. So I unsubbed.

Maybe he put them in 40hz for better battery life? A "heavy" 60 hz game can drain the battery in one hour.

It's still a redundant thing to do, if it can run well at 60 frames, then 40hz is going to work for whatever reason. He does a lot of Switch game videos too, but for the Switch it makes sense to test both as there's a performance difference docked vs handheld

Some games still have 30/60 fps locks, and some just work weird at 40 (physics get wonky or they slow down). It's usually older titles or janky remasters. I recently played a game that worked 2 times slower at 40hz, while it had no problems with a 30 fps lock with 60hz refresh.
So it's not completely redundant, although I don't know if the youtuber in question had that aspect in mind.

I think if that were true, they'd start selling them in more regions. Still can't order one from here without going through an overseas scalper

Yeah, it took a day to get from Wrocław to next to Kraków for him. It got tp Poland on Monday.
He's having a blast, though not without problems. Apparently there is a common issue that the deck won't turn on when it's not plugged in, despite having enough charge. I've read that a possible solution is to let it drain entirely and charge afterwards to 'reset' the battery. Not sure if he tried it already

Fuck, ever since I got the Deck I didn't touch my PC.
Finished AI: The Somnium Files, played a ton of Vampire Survivors, a little bit of Brotato. Currently early on in Cult of the Lamb and having a blast. I didn't even touch the emulation stuff yet.

I set up a streaming PC for myself. Sunshine+Moonlight ftw
1) Lenovo Legion 7 (AMD Ryzen 7 5800H, RTX 3080 16Gb, 32Gb DDR4, SSD 1TB +2TB
2) SFFPC (streaming via Moonlight+ Sunshine)
