The first Witcher is still my favorite in many ways. The combat is the weakest but it has many elements that I miss in the other games - especially the interface and inventory system.
I actually really liked the first games combat. Sure, signs usage wasn't as fluid as it was in later games, and the combat was pretty stiff overall (unfortunate side effect of the engine and that the game wasn't designed to be arcadey like in the sequels ) but the multiple stances and when you get more used to them being able to switch them on the fly mid-fight to take on different enemy types, made it much more engaging and quite fun..
PLUS being able to unlock additional moves as you progressed making the fight combos look more exciting and complex, was something I loved (I have a thing about unlocks, and those were some of the most enjoyable I've come across in any game).
It's still my favourite game in the franchise, but witcher 3 came pretty close to topping it.
I did like the combat myself but it lacked a bit of depth.
Witcher 2's combat felt perfect for me before they patched it to make it easier - you had to use a combination of bombs, knives, signs and regular sword strikes on harder difficulties and it really felt amazing how dynamic it made combat and alert you had to be.
Witcher 3 seems to be more between TW1 and TW2 but either way, all three games had enjoyable combat but TW1 just was a little less tactical to me.
TW1 combat had one critical flaw really, which was at its core - progressive comboes that you have to simply click through over and over, which is obviosly bad - all decent combat systems need to involve the player in some decision making, arguably the more the better. Which witcher 1 barely did. The FCR mod helped a bit, but that still was not enough to make it enjoyable for the duration of the game.

Yes trivial and repetitive on derp difficulty though, replay the game on hard then tell me how trivially easy timed clicking is..
W3 on hardest, now that's some repetitive and boring combat after about level 6.
Thinking about replaying it since it was long since I've finished it. Any gfx mods that I should take notice of?
Graphics:
The Rise of the White Wolf Enhanced Edition - UI and lore-friendly texture upgrade.
The Witcher Overhaul Project - texture and sound Get the optional files for blood and corpses.
Hi-Res Character Models - rise of the white wolf overwrites the main character, but this packs add high res versions for all monsters, npcs, etc.
Complete Sword Overhaul
Dagger Overhaul
Better Dice and Desaturated Board - all three are recommended texture upgrades
Texturen Mod - if you can download the FX version only. it greatly improves the fx effects, otherwise it's sharpened vanilla textures that look like shit
Bugfixes:
Han Gives Han NOT Berbercane
Fair Kalkstein
Missing Kalkstein and Leuvaarden Clues Fix
Leuvaarden Buys Salamandra Badges
Dontforceminreqs Low Res Texture
Unofficial Patch 1.5.1 Mod
Optional:
Lore Triss by DeMelodit - lore friendly outfit and appearance
Shani's Outfit - w3 style outfit
Walk Mod - a key bind for walking in OTS mode
Scabbard Mod - unlocks scabbards for Geralt. cdpr never implemented them 100% before game release
FPS Counter - a great program which includes v-sync, color-correction, superior aa and ambient occlusion. it is needed because on new hardware there are numerous glitches with the npc's hair during longer game sessions. they can be resolved if you force v-sync through the gpu drivers or another way. the problem is you need a D3DOverrider program, so you can force the v-sync. FPS Counter works, ENB and Reshade works, probably other apps like Rivatuner will also work.

Can you post a link for the Walk Mod - a key bind for walking in OTS mode as I cannot seem to find a working link and would like to check this one out.

After installation the key bind will pop up in the controls settings. It's the unbined "move forward" at the top above the exact same one, which is bind by default.

And another for the 1.5.1 unofficial patch while you're at it
Also a quick note, because I forgot to mention it:
For the Scabbard Mod to work with Complete Sword Overhaul you need to install the optional patch from CSO.
For the Lore Triss by DeMelodit to work with Rise of the White Wolf you need to delete the "Triss" folder in Data\z_zrotww\Characters after installing RotWW.
about to replay it... grabbing the mods. im grumpy someone suggested rise of the white wolf mod.. its absolutely hideous, and destroys the games nice gui by replacing it with a sterile low quality, low effort amateur effort. couldnt get rid of that fast enough. shame on you. shame. SHAME. SHAME. SHAME.
Well... Witcher is Witcher. 1, 2 or 3... Makes no difference. The number is arbitrary. The definition’s blurred. If I’m to choose between 1, 2 and 3… I’d rather not choose at all.

Spoiler:
Uh no. He mentions it's the first of three, so it will be one per game. And you'd knew, if you checked at least the first 10 min of this one
It's decent background noise while working.

complicated feelings about that. I still enjoy going back to that game as the gameplay is both unique and fun. I expect them to make it into the copy paste combat that is witcher 2 and 3.
Already an avalanche of comments from console only tards who break their fingers trying to use m/kb how this game was never good, and how badly it needs a remake. And when it came out, at least in PC circles, the Codex and paper pc magazines were saying how this is a jewel of a game that needs to be savoured because something so good only comes out once every several years.
And to look at the disrespect from consoleros who are angry that its not on console and they cant play it with a pad ...

To be honest it was bad game in the first few months. Terrible performance, countless bugs and very poor controlling. It was just when they released the Enhanced Edition it became a great game. Similar thing happened with the 2nd game where the funniest thing was that the tutorial was the hardest part of the game and many filthy casuals couldn't go through it.
I see some people never actually managing to deal with the first's combat. Heard it a few times, but i thought it was creative and i loved the clicking and swapping swords and styles
The second game was just a copy paste of other 360 games at the time.
And then you had the third game with it's fist fights. I absolutely loathe fist fights. The core gameplay was also simple though.

I see you are a man of culture as well.
I really LIKED the combat in the first game. Swapping swords and combat style made so much sense (in the context of different enemies / monsters), instead of the button mashing that is Witcher 3...
