I loved Doom 2016 (the power fantasy and the gameplay fluidity was just awesome) and hated Eternal at first. But after trying it a second time a year later, I came to like that one too.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

The newer Doom games are very good, but they have one major problem

There should be no reliance on glory kills (ammo, health) which constantly take you out of control for seconds at a time, it ruins the flow of everything. There isn't enough ammo in each level not to use glory kills, especially on harder difficulties

I thought the same at first, especially for Doom Eternal. Thats why I went for the Ammo upgrades first, then armor. After that you adapt and develop strategies around it. Around a certain point in the game, Ammo is plenty. Combine it with the shotgun burning chain upgrades to get armor, makes it very satisfying to play.

But I agree, that I‘d have preferred gameplay to be less focused on glory kills.

if u take away the glory kills mechanic from eternal then its just anonther shooter. its like u said, to develop strategies and not be just another dumb shooter for the braindead retards not know how to play a game. i bet u all these retards that complain they just either dont understand it or just not gut at videogames. its just anonther fuckinng retarded argument for it to be removed just like retards cry souls games are too hard.

get gut and stfu. if u play 2016 after finishing eternal only then u can understanad how good eternal is and how faster the gameplay actual is.

Calm down knob head. The game is fast with or without the mechanic. And without it, it is fast 100% of the time. Your argument doesn't even make sense.

Having finished both games on nightmare, it has nothing to do with 'getting good'

To be better, you wouldn't be locked into these invincibility states (glory kills) to replenish ammo/health. Instead, you'd find the things you need yourself. You know, that old resource management mechanic that has been apart of challenging games for a few decades now.

It worked for the original DOOM, UT, Quake etc for years. Games that are so fast paced and skill reliant that they cannot even work properly on gamepads without 40 layers of aim assist. They made it more accessible and somehow you've twisted that to imply that this new way of playing the game is more taxing on the average derp's noggin. Good one. It's a crutch, if anything.

Fast paced arena style combat shouldn't be interupted by cinematic violence porn. There's nothing worse than getting into the groove of the game's loop, with pumping music, satisfying shots, movement, etc, only for the music to figuratively stop so you can see the same animation play out for the 10,000th time. All because the arena's ammo dried up.

Glory kills weren't the problem with Eternal, at least for me. It was the fact that there are enemies that you MUST kill a certain way, every time. It's repetitive, boring and unimaginative.

I still have a blast playing it but the DLCs take this principle to the max and i could just barely get through the first one with no desire to play the 2nd.

it's controversial but i much more like 2016 than Eternal.
Eternal is too busy and systematic with all the little counters and systems

I same on same boat I guess. I just want to shoot things up not jump like an ape around and hope to get some glory kills and beg for ammo.

And sadly they're both shit. Doom 3 is where it was at, not piñata paradise.

This sorta looks a different than the other unreleased one, that they said was more cinematic and scripted. Looks interesting. I would have liked them to go in that dirrection. Im the biggest Doom 3 fan ever and i love all the other influences they took to enrich the original 1993 experience which had no place at all back in 2004. Take some stuff from SS2, look at the Oneiros plane from Undying to design Hell. Take a shitload of stuff from Half Life that gives more purpose and fleshes everything out more. But keep the same underlying framework of killing lots of demons.
