Hardware: Shipbreakers, the spiritual successor to the Homeworld franchise being developed by founding members of Relic Entertainment, is now, thanks to Gearbox Software, officially a Homeworld game.
The game will now be titled Homeworld: Shipbreakers as part of a deal signed by Gearbox and developer Blackbird Interactive at PAX. What's more, Gearbox Software will help Blackbird complete the game with the help of financial and production resources, CEO Randy Pitchford told Polygon today.
"These guys have been funded by private equity, but it's clear it was going to take many millions of dollars more," Pitchford said. "We're giving them the brand and the resources to make this happen. Now, these guys are cooking and with the money they have now, they can grow the team."
The deal, Pitchford said, was signed last Wednesday during PAX Dev, a developer-only event that precedes PAX Prime.
The game is now officially known as "Homeworld: Shipbreakers" and is being part-financed as well as published by Gearbox. Well played Gearbox, that was a damned decent thing of you to do.... though of course I'll bet this comes with the ever-so-lovely stipulation of 70% of the proceeds, right? Though I have to admit, this bit was pretty funny/cool;
Quote:
"Gearbox is not in the best spot to make a sci-fi RTS successor," Pitchford said, explaining that the Borderlands developer's expertise lies elsewhere (and it's also busy with Borderlands and other next-gen projects). "We've become expert at production and that's where we can help. I mean, we shipped Duke Nukem Forever, we didn't build it but we made sure it came out. And that's a fucking miracle."
I know right? Well, on the bright side.. perhaps now it can become a far greater game than its "free to play, online, persistent, social" original vision? Perhaps this could finally be something worth getting excited over?
... or perhaps it could be another Gearbox failure
Trey Smith from Blackbird Interactive is back to deliver another developer walkthrough for Hardspace: Shipbreaker, this time to showcase a full work order to salvage materials from a Gecko Transport ship.
Blackbird Interactive and Focus Entertainment’s acclaimed zero-g, sandbox, spaceship-salvaging game Hardspace: Shipbreaker will launch out of Steam Early Access and land on the Windows Store on May 24, available Day One with PC Game Pass! Check out the official Release Date Reveal Trailer as you prepare to roll up your sleeves and get to work in the dangerous (but profitable) world of deep-space salvage, where your strategy is only as good as your execution.
The version 1.0 update will include the following additions:
Final Campaign Act Added – A powerful and satisfying conclusion to the events set in motion over the course of Acts One and Two.
Save and Load Ships – Save your in-progress salvage! No more losing value on a behemoth ship because you need to step away.
Improved Progression, Economy, and Upgrades – With the help of our fantastic community, the pace of progress has been tuned to perfection.
Improved Performance and Stability – We’ve diligently worked out a ship-load of kinks to provide the smoothest and most reliable version of the game yet.
Steam Achievements / TradingCards / Emoticons / Backgrounds – Show-off your salvaging prowess with these rewards.
amazing game that somehow got totally sidetracked, confusingly adding a linear storyline no one wanted instead of more ships to tear down, and now we have minimum viable product
still a cool game.. just i don't know how they fucked it so hard when they had a great showing so early in development, somehow they completely sat on it and decided having someone yap in your ear was more important than gameplay additions. BBI are absolute dog shit when it comes to product support so i guess this is it.
Signature/Avatar nuking: none (can be changed in your profile)
