They went so hard into this with the idea of having very good visibility for everything, and people are giving feedback that they cant understand what they;re looking at while playing.
They dont like that they made all the UI icons in gold instead of colored. The unit colors are too intense that they cant see the underlying models and dont know what sort of unit they're attacking them and how to respond. The buildings are hard to identify what each one does in the heat of battle.

They just copied some of the gameplay mechanics, left out a lot of quality of life features, left out 20 years of development of a good RTS, and then added NOTHING, with arguably sad graphics.
Instead we got ugly garbage. They didn't know what game they wanted to develop so they listened to the community. That didn't help either so we got some safe basic boring Age of Empires clone
Last Age I played was II, and I liked that back then. But then the RTS I really sunk hours into was SC2. Then I played some Age II some years ago (after binging on SC2), and it was slow and clunky as hell, got bored of it asap.
Age 4 speeds things up, it is more modern, it is readable, it is super stable for me, always high FPS, and it still feels like an Age game, even though it has more SC DNA in it.

Hate on!
You're definitely not. I'm looking forward to this as well.
Thats the problem though. Age 2 came out in 1999. That Age 4 in 2021, 22 years later is basically the same game with worse graphics than 16 year old Age 3 is embarassing, its not fine.
Relic seems to have been very scared by the Dawn of War 3 situation, where they ignored everyone telling them its shit long before the game came out that they went 180 with this one. Its equally bad
As much as I liked the classic AoE formula and its campaigns (still do), I was expecting to see a natural evolution of it rather than a low-effort rehashing job. I never touched the multiplayer though so I'm probably not their target audience these days, as online folks typically tend to feel aversion towards changes. Having a new Age of Empires to look forward to should be exciting, and yet when I watch the recent footage there's only mild wololo numbness.
yeah, so cattering to the old playerbase seems fine with this one, as many wanted a sequel to aoe2, aoe3 i did liked
Its not a sequel to Age 2. Its the same game, but with less features. We cant seriously excuse copying a 22 year old game with zero inovations or improvements.
Maybe they want to release it as AoE2 clone (sort of) just to get positive reviews from the target audience, and then to change stuff over time with patches and expansions. Because if you do it that way, that's evolution and innovation, and if you do it on release, you get shat on by YouTubers
"During their technical planning for Age of Empires IV, the team found that a significant number of the Age of Empires community still play those earlier Age of Empires games on laptops or on older desktop PCs with discreet and integrated Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). Since they wanted to reach the largest player base possible, that meant that they had to take both configurations into account and design for GPUs that have their own RAM, as well as ones that utilize some of the system’s RAM. "
Now I'm understanding how it feels to read a thread with the same negative single opinion repeated ad nauseam
PS : Please go on, I was just amused I'm in that seat for once, I just think it's not a core AoE game you're really looking for, other series do that well. It could've been more indeed (I liked those earliest trailers with Anno vibes), but it would miss its target demographic.
