The moment you’ve all been waiting for:
EPISODE THREE IS COMING!!!
After a long period of you waiting for news about the next installment in the story of The Long Dark, I’m excited to share the news that Episode Three will release December 2018, along with the “Redux” editions of Episodes One and Two, unveiling a whole new experience of WINTERMUTE, The Long Dark’s story mode.
We’ll be teasing out more Episode Three details in the months ahead, but as a reminder: in Episode Three, you’ll play as Dr. Astrid Greenwood, and the story picks up in the aftermath of the events of Milton, as experienced from Mackenzie’s point of view in Episode One. You’ll meet new survivors, explore a new region, and find out more about the events prior to, and after, the First Flare event that engulfed Great Bear Island — and perhaps the rest of the world — into “the long dark”.
EPISODES ONE & TWO “REDUX”
Along with Episode Three, we’ll be releasing the “Redux” editions of Episodes One and Two, which we’ve spent the last year reworking in order to set up a stronger foundation for Episode Three and the remaining parts of the five-episode WINTERMUTE story mode. I talked a bit about the reasoning behind the Redux work in our February Dev Diary. Some of the work that’s gone into the Redux episodes includes:
More open and flexible mission structure, reducing the forced linearity of the story missions; this includes restructuring the side missions and making more of the content optional
Whole new playable intro sequence for Episode One
All NPC dialogue is now fully voiced and animated using an entirely new animation system
All dialogue and narrative scenes are now presented in first-person, using an overhauled dialogue UI
New major story elements in both Episodes, including a new NPC
Although the high-level episode story arcs remain as before, almost every story beat, dialogue moment, and mission element has been improved, with about 80% of the dialogue rewritten to accommodate
Removed the Trust system as it contributed to the “fetch questy” feeling of the first two episodes (we plan to repurpose this system for elsewhere in the game)
Completely overhauled Bear Hunt mission and added new gameplay (Episode Two)
Improved tutorial presentation
Improved story UI elements
…and many other fixes and improvements.
The improvements made in the Redux versions are pretty extensive, and most of them were made based on community feedback, so we hope you’ll go back and replay them before continuing on to Episode Three.
Please note that because so much has changed, in-progress playthroughs of Episode One or Two will be wiped when the Redux versions are released in December. Players who have already completed the original versions of Episodes One and Two and who wish to just continue directly to Episode Three will not be affected by the save wipe. So, if you are in the midst of a WINTERMUTE playthrough and don’t want to lose your progress, you have until December to complete it.
So, to recap: Episode Three, along with the “Redux” versions of Episodes One and Two, will all be releasing together in December!

lol.. what kind of wind animation is that on the trees, looks awful. These trees would look better if completely still, it even makes more sense since they are heavy with snow and frozen, they wouldn't move like someone is shaking a towel, if they did they wouldnt be covered with snow for long.. duh..
Wish it had a complete graphics overhaul tbh.. it's an "ok"'ish concept, but its stupid you can't do typical surival things, like even jumping. when i played like a year ago you also had to stuff yourself with food like some crazy obese person.. not very convincing. water is one thing, food would be very optional in a situation like this.
Butter apparently helps with keeping warmth but yeah mass eating is not quite as realistic and were'd you get the milk anyway. Hi bear I'ma just do a little squeeze and done!
(The Butcher) Ah fresh milk!
Yeah...no.
Need to see the video for the tree swaying tree animation because I'm imagining some rubber tree caricature now or at least less rigid than actual wood in a cold environment. (Fir and pine and those.)
EDIT: Ah I see now it's kinda like the PhysX cloth demonstration in effect.
Or they used other sources for the animation idea.

Polar explorers need 6000 calories a day, as opposed to the normal 2000-2500 calories of regular people.
Given the setting, I think the game is even easier than it should be in terms of food requirements.

you can go without food for a very long time without any ill effects whatsoever.. i do fasting for up to 5 days sometimes, it's no big deal at all, apart from the very first time that you do it (obviously you do not start doing 5 days, you gradually work yourself up to it). But it's not like you would die from it.. Water and salt is essential.
There are people who have fasted for a year with no ill effects. Granted, those were extremely fat people, but a healthy person (not super fat) can also go without food and have very good (increased) energy for quite a while. In a survival situation you'd burn tons of fat of course and in the long run you'd die if you didn't eat.. but it would take weeks for someone fairly healthy if he has water (plenty here) + salt. He wouldn't feel very good after a while and energy levels wouldnt be optimal after some time - where the person goes from fasting to starvation.
Those survival tv-shows are very ridiculous like that, often it's like they have to eat the very first day + they spend tons and tons of energy finding that food, makes no sense. Food is good if you run into it, not otherwise. Reminds me of that south park episode where they are lost for like 2 hours in the wilderness and they think that's enough to become cannibals and they eat some dude.
Play as Dr. Astrid Greenwood in this continuation of the WINTERMUTE storyline. Launches October 22nd, 2019.
Facing the blizzards of Pleasant Valley, Astrid must bring all her skills as a doctor to bear on the survivors she encounters. But will she find Mackenzie, and get closer to the mystery that's taking them to Perseverance Mills?
Too bad you can't seem to mod this game. The lego-like graphics are terrible. I understand they're going for that style but i don't find it immersive in a game about nature / survival.
I guess you stil can't jump or climb in this ""survival"" game?
..and did the developer ultimately understand that eating several kg of meat every day to survive doesn't make any kind of sense and would just slow you down tremendously?
Original backer, very disappointed when i tried it a few years ago. you could tell directly that he's never been out of the basement + is clueless of how the human body works.

^ This.
One would think that in a FPS sim game the jump action would add A LOT to gameplay and immersion.
Also, the need to eat WHOLE wolf carcasses PER DAY just to survive is absolutely... /facepalm
if someone hacks a third person perspective, maybe we would be surprised(?) to see a guy in a wheelchair... that would make so much sense, e.g falling 0.5m kills him, can't jump, can't climb.. Maybe he's also so underweight that he's bordering to dying and why he has to eat 1 wolf daily.
Food is extremely overrated in a survival situation, you don't need it at all. After 24h of fasting you will notice a nice boost in mood and alertness because you're starting to eat into the fat reserve which is a more efficient energy source than food.
I hate giving indies shit btw, and especially when i do like the rest of the premise
