Ah finally, after almost two years of paying premium for virtually unused RTX features, it has a chance to take off.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Quote: | The final component in the triumvirate is an extension to DirectX - DirectStorage - a necessary upgrade bearing in mind that existing file I/O protocols are knocking on for 30 years old, and in their current form would require two Zen CPU cores simply to cover the overhead, which DirectStorage reduces to just one tenth of single core.
"Plus it has other benefits," enthuses Andrew Goossen. "It's less latent and it saves a ton of CPU. With the best competitive solution, we found doing decompression software to match the SSD rate would have consumed three Zen 2 CPU cores. When you add in the IO CPU overhead, that's another two cores. So the resulting workload would have completely consumed five Zen 2 CPU cores when now it only takes a tenth of a CPU core. So in other words, to equal the performance of a Series X at its full IO rate, you would need to build a PC with 13 Zen 2 cores. That's seven cores dedicated for the game: one for Windows and shell and five for the IO and decompression overhead." |
This and maybe some other stuff might come to PC? |
It's coming to nvidia. https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/rtx-io-gpu-accelerated-storage-technology/
Quote: | Leveraging the advanced architecture of our new GeForce RTX 30 Series graphics cards, we’ve created NVIDIA RTX IO, a suite of technologies that enable rapid GPU-based loading and game asset decompression, accelerating I/O performance by up to 100x compared to hard drives and traditional storage APIs. When used with Microsoft’s new DirectStorage for Windows API, RTX IO offloads dozens of CPU cores’ worth of work to your GeForce RTX GPU, improving frame rates, enabling near-instantaneous game loading, and opening the door to a new era of large, incredibly detailed open world games. |

We can very safely assume it'll come to AMD as well.

Me three
The main reason was that I was able to get RX 570 / 8 GB for ~180 EUR brand new, and also Nvidia can't write drivers anymore. The moment when I released that I have to read reddit analysis for each driver version to see if it fucked up a game or introduced new overhead in API calls, and to use NVSlimmer to remove the bloat from the installation package, was the moment I decided it was enough.

No one will be stopping them for sure, it will be part of Windows: https://devblogs.microsoft.com/directx/directstorage-is-coming-to-pc/
When AMD will implement it though, who knows. e.g. just because DXR has been available by MS, it didn't mean AMD made compatible hardware and software for it. Eventually they will, though.

It's still called Minecraft RTX and not Minecraft DXR and it's directly coming from Microsoft... so we know their bias :'(

Also comes to Turing too, as recently was revealed.
Keep in mind this is not a performance by default, just like with HW scheduler. Games that use it have to completely redo their assets into raw format that can be "eaten" by GPU directly. So dont expect current and old games benefit from that in any way

Fucking DX12... Makes alt-tabbing longer in some of my games. In Wolrd of Warcraft, with DX12, the monitor goes black for 2s when alt-tabbing, perfectly fine, instant alt-tab in DX11 mode. Ehhh....

Well, HW Scheduling does have an effect even on games that haven't been patched with support. However, the effects are veeery varied, from worse performance through no difference to somewhat impressive performance increases depending on game, resolution and updated drivers.
Test (June 27) of a bunch of games with HW Scheduling on/off: https://adoredtv.com/windows-10-gpu-scheduling-benchmarked-in-8-games-and-3dmark/
I guess DirectStorage will be of limited interest to gamers for quite a while and it will probably work best for the latest and upcoming hardware generations. With the upcoming consoles arriving with new storage tech that seem to leave previous and current PC storage solutions behind I doubt older and current gen stuff will gain much from DirectStorage except perhaps with Ampere GPU's (and possibly a lesser improvement from Turing-based GPU's), esp. since the storage system in current and previous-gen PC's are just upgraded/updated variants of the tech that has been around since IDE arrived in 1986.
I guess only the faster drives on NVME will gain any performance with the new API (and I think DirectStorage only support NVME anyway). This is just speculation on my side but I doubt we'll see any noticeable jump in performance for quite a while (new hardware and drivers needed that are designed to take advantage of it since the API is coming from the work on the upcoming Xbox storage architecture known as Velocity).
Another 5 pence in the bucket-opinion.

DirectStorage will be Windows 11 exclusive and require 1TB SSD minimum.

Quote: | With DirectStorage, which will only be available with Windows 11, games can quickly load assets to the graphics card without bogging down the CPU. This means you’ll get to experience incredibly detailed game worlds rendered at lightning speeds, without long load times. “DirectStorage Optimized” Windows 11 PCs are configured with the hardware and drivers needed to enable this amazing experience. |

So specification requirements for DirectStorage .... It now needs a DX12 Ultimate GPU which is RTX 2000, RTX 3000 or RX 6000 series GPUs
That will piss off alot of people.

Which people is going to piss off? I bet the people who knew about and are interested in DirectStorage already have a gpu for this or are looking to get one.
