Playing the first one on the switch. Never played it before. Love it. Albeit shite visuals but plays nice. I dont think ill be as heavily invested in this as others were with the first one (hours and hours of gameplay streams), but if gameplay is similar (in the sequel) ill enjoy it.

Thought I'd play for 10 minutes and 2 hours passed and I died a lot cause I was busy exploring and didn't focus on surviving. A lot of fun.

I loved the first one because it made me shit my pants whenever I went to explore, I played it as a horror game with survival features. This one looks too bright and cutesy, kinda misses the whole point for me personally.
Maybe I'll give it a try one day.

Played for an hour last night. Managed to die in the first 5 minutes after some fish froze me to the bottom of the ocean and I ran out of oxygen while trying to break free. Laughing
So far same old Subnautica. Maybe a bit harder if there are more varied hostile fishes. Will see later.

Also is the loading veeeeery slow or is it just me?

Funny thing is I launched the game and did a 6 hours long first session, hooked up like mad.

Loving it so far, definitely a nice sequel Smile

Hm, I thought it would drag me in a lot more than it does... How does the story progress, exactly, at the start? Are there hidden timers or triggers or something? After I went to the first emergency beacon, nothing triggered. It took a few trips back and forth before the waypoint to Delta station popped up.

Damn sea monkey just grabbed the scanner out of my hand, that was fun Laughing

There must have been a door there in the wall, when I came in.

About ~11 hours in, alas (but expected Okay) the game definitely feels like it's a substantial step back from the original Subnautica in terms of level design, atmosphere, music and writing. Its gameplay loop still works very well since it also includes a few QoL improvements, there are still fascinating biomes and a rather decent dose of exploration, but it's evident that the overall experience shifted towards more shallow waters - in the literal sense, which the new narrative direction, bland characters and the "imma go on an adventure to find mah sistah #yolo" general tone can't really help to elevate. Then again, when you lose talented people and decide to pursue a certain path it's difficult for the final quality to remain unaffected by it.

The original Subnautica had it all: a very tangible sense of intriguing mystery, it offered an extensive area focused more on exploring creepy depths rather than the surface, which coupled with its well-written informative pieces of the alien puzzle scattered through the world, the silent protagonist and the threatening structure overall made the game extremely memorable for me, it's up there with my all-time favourites. The expandalone is still enjoyable in its own way and I'll keep playing it, but sadly, it really is nowhere near as engrossing or satisfying as it should be.

Yep I believe it's a mix of both, with story-related triggers that get activated when you visit specific locations + also do specific tasks, and timers as well for the side missions/artefacts. It's not strict though, there's always a certain amount of randomness involved Razz

Finally finished this after 30 hours. TBH half of this time was going back and forth to hoard resources that I barely used. Rolling Eyes It's still good game but for fans of Subnautica looking for a fresh and new game, it's mostly disappointing. Felt very claustrophobic and small compared to the first game. Tho I never got to the end of the map because all the story objectives are in some 1.2k radius from the life pod. And I liked the open ending where it looks like the game for better or worse will become

Yeah, in general it was a bit disappointing. A large part of the game (the whole sister plot) turned out to be optional and felt unfinished.

The decision to get a new writer and change the whole story mid-development in order to give the franchise a new tone/direction was always going to be a risky move, and indeed it backfired in my opinion. The exposition and pseudo-Disneyian characters in Below Zero ultimately felt very forced and steered the franchise away from its strengths.

They wanted the player to feel connected to the protagonist and offer a simple tangible motive by also toning down the terror component, but that also meant losing a good deal of what made Subnautica special in the first place. The game still works because the core gameplay is good, but everything else (including the actual exploration) sadly was rather flaccid.
