I just finished the game as well. Loved it and enjoyed it a lot. I installed Risen now.

Risen was good, until the last third of the game.

Skip Gotchic 3...... it's a weird beast. By beast, I mean a mangled, deformed, incoherent mess.

Agreed. I really really wanted to love it, but after a few hours everything started to fall apart because of its repetitive quests design and massive emphasis on going back 'n forth without a satisfying progression system in place - which is precisely what makes something like ELEX so captivating and engaging in the first place.
It's a shame because it does have an inspired setting, the characters and art-style are interesting-ish and the typical simple Spidersian combat system works for what it is. Greedfall was better structured in my opinion, but it still retained some of the drawbacks and in general it definitely felt like the game bit off more than it could chew in terms open world and story. I was genuinely looking forward to Outward and Insomnia The Ark as well, though unfortunately, they both failed for different reasons with the latter being stuck in a permanent critical unfinished state that doesn't seem to go anywhere.
TL;DR Piranha are the only ones that (despite everything) still grasp the essence of the sub-genre. Please ELEX 2 don't suck, you're our only hope(tm)

I'd say to try it as well. Not the expansion tho, Forsaken Gods, that one seriously sucks. But Gothic 3 is good. The world is even better than the previous games. There has been some experiments gameplay-wise like the liberating of settlements and that you can join the orcs but I personally liked it. The story is decent too. The worst part is the combat, basically just press left mouse button until your fingers hurt without any thinking.
Also try with the community patch - https://www.patches-scrolls.com/dl.php?file=gothic_3_community_patch_v1.75.14_int_full.zip

I started playing this again and i while i didn't like it that much the first time (didn't finish) i think it's one of their better games this time around. Maybe i needed a break. Also using 3D Vision this time which is cool in this game because you have a lot of verticality, makes it really "pop".
The combat is actually decent or even quite good, the best combat since Gothic 2. Ranged doesn't seem like a lot of fun, but melee is good.
How's the end chapter, a drag like in Risen? Hope not.
Very much looking forward to ELEX 2 now.

I always thought the jetpack was brilliant, perfect for exploration and running away from tough enemies. Added a lot to the game word which PB generally does a great job with.

Yes, always loved jetpacks.. i've had some scary moments where i've tried to traverse a long distance very high up in the air and either run out of energy or just made it to the other side.
The vertigo i can get is incredible haha (never had a problem with vertigo in games, its scary but also just really fun because you have that intense reaction to a game.) One of the reasons i always try to play with 3D vision in these types of games.

Playing as a melee character is indeed the best way to enjoy the challenge and exploration that the game offers. The collision system is wonky at times, it's still possible to cheese your way out of it and there will be the inevitable moment when you'll get nearly unstoppable, but the overall sense of progression is just so incredibly satisfying. I became an Outlaw against all odds and still retained my melee-ism with guns as an emergency measure, plus I really wanted to bang Nasty
The fact that most tripeA titles prefer to build their fortune on the instant gratification dogma instead truly is something the industry should be ashamed about, though all the gamers that condone such a vision and reward it are as guilty as well. Damn, now I really want to play it again with a different faction..*must resist*..for the backlog.
@Vurt: The final sections suffer a bit from the slightly more constrained structure and the fact that you're pretty powerful by then, but (fortunately ) they are nowhere near as annoying as Risen's were. I liked how the story wrapped things up as well while leaving things open for a sequel.

It might be clunky in comparison to "AAA" games, i mostly play indie games (or games from smaller studios). Shitty animations, i'm not sure when i've ever seen good combat animations.. or perhaps its not something i really care about so i just don't notice it too much. What's a game with good combat animations?
I do agree with the hitboxes, it's been a complaint since release, really bad that they never cared to patch it, but they often disappoint with that. They can make some minimal patches at times, that's all.
Haven't really noticed it to be more unresponsive than anything else, but again, i can't say i play a lot of 3D melee fighting games, last modern game with melee combat i played was Dark Souls 3 i believe.
Just seems odd to say it's frustrating when it's so easy and straight-forward.

So I finally started playing this properly and I do love it at times and it really does give me G1/2 vibes sometimes. There's a lot I find annoying in it too however.
I went straight with the ultra difficulty and progress is incredibly slow, but I'm managing. I don't know whether it's worth it though as it just ends up being really frustrating at times. I'm really wondering at this point if I should take down the difficulty a notch?

Yep, I would say that going with Difficult is the best choice overall. It's still tough at the beginning (as it should be as per tradition) and different builds/playing styles of course give different results, but in general it makes the progression smoother and mitigates the godmode-like effect near the end of the game that one has with the Normal difficulty. I never really bothered with Ultra because the enemy stats are artificially boosted and it requires more cheesing techniques than the usual which can ruin the experience.

Alright, thanks for the answer, ixi! Ultra feels needlessly tedious. From what I've read most people seem to be against it. I have no doubt that eventually I'd get past the hard part and start being able to fight things properly, but it doesn't feel very fun. Been playing for a while now and I still have to rely on a companion to get through anywhere.
