My Windows is pirated! Laughing

Also, my main drive is 1TB and it's almost full, the SSD is 480GB, I can't clone the disk to it.

i would have expected the operating system to be more smart in how it uses the ssd/and hdd by now, where it puts most used/loaded files on the sdd

But i think they are affraid to do this as it would write much more to the ssd and thus reduce it lifespan (a tiny amount for casual joe)

But u see most prebuilds dont even have a normal HDD anymore , i bet u there is a lot of kids who had their parents be pissed at them for filling the family computer ssd with their one game , so sad

True, for mass storage it's still far too expensive. I have 2x 8TB HDDs for that in my machine, and 4x 4TB on external USB enclosure for backups (only plug in when needed). ~1TB of the 8TBs HDDs is in RAID 1 to safeguard against disk crashes. 750GB for games in RAID 0. Rest is just disk as-is. My 480GB SSD is only for Windows + apps.

I just did a "bit" dumb mistake, I should have invest on one more 512gb m2 sdd instead of another 2 TB HDD. I realized I don't really need and overkill in terms of space

luckily, I got M2 from my dead laptop which works wonderful in addition of SSD from my old PC, but my motherboard support 2 slots of M2 and I have more than enough hard disks already, I am considerring to sell one the 2TBs I have and get another M2.

Well that was fun...

Upgraded my bios from F32 to F33G since there was some bugfix for L3 cache use re ryzen 5000 (GIGANTE aorus elite mobo), after that set xmp to active and load optimized fan profiles via GB's app. App wasn't loading, uninstalled, reinstalled and managed to get it working again, it's all good.
Spent the morning playing stalker LA, and after lunch decided to watch that godzilla vs kong. Go to the torrent drive and... wait, where's the drive? No, better yet, where are ALL my sata drives?
Well, they're all offline on Disk Management Laughing

Ok, bring the most disposable on online annnnnnnd 100% unallocated. Same for the other ones. Thankfully it wasn't my first time with similar hijinxs, so after an afternoon of initialize into MBR -> rebuild MBR -> recover partition everything's back online again, with no apparent data loss. Strange thing is, if it *wasn't* from the bios upgrade and the uninstall/reinstall, if it was some sort of ransomware shit how could they overlook the nvme and the big ass external hdd one?
Odd shit, but from now on I'll disconnect every drive each time there is a bios update You Suspicious Be

Anyway, any recommendations for a backup drive? SSD doesn't seem like a good idea for it, but is there any hybrid solution between HDD and SSD that would get me the space but also some speed?

@zTurbo
For home use?
Because enterprise/business scale disk throughput can be a bottleneck on massive scale rack clusters and 10/100 GBPS switched rack hubs (think google search servers).

For home, no and the improvement if there was would be negligible at best. Until other hardware gets faster, the vast majority of wait time on things is processing the info got off the disk, not waiting on the disk itself.
As it is now, you could raid 20 SSD's for 20GBPS+ and would notice no noticeable difference in windows usage or wait times.
There would be a difference, but it's on such a small scale that unless you was doing timing benchmarks to see the decimal of a second difference you will not notice it.

If you're talking NVMe drives: for most use, no. I do not experience a lot of difference with my SSD. The system does boot a bit faster, but we're talking a few seconds at most. Where I do notice a considerable difference in is how fast some large apps start (Visual Studio, Docker). The price of my NVMe drive was only a bit more than a comparable SSD, so I just went with NVMe. If you're getting a good deal on an SSD drive, sure, why not.

Don't defrag, you'll only wear down your SSD. SSDs don't have moving parts so it doesn't matter that it's fragmented.

So... you don't know how a ssd is working?

PS: with a SSD it's called Trim(ming). I don't think you even could defrag a ssd even if you wanted to (in 2021).

Got myself a Samsung 980 1TB NVME today. Used Macrium Reflect to clone my 250GB Samsung 840 EVO to the new drive and then Minitools Partition Magic to change sizes, add ~10% OP on each and viola, works just fine.. and it's sooo much faster than that old 840 Evo even though it's an "entry-level" NVME from Intel (no onboard DRAM, relies on HBM for caching instead). ~€100 for a 1TB drive.

Using an SATA EVO 860 1TB over here. Though i've already seen vids online about comparing a SATA SSD with the NVME with very little differences regarding W10 booting (from the moment you press the power button on a 100% shutdown PC, NO HIBERNATION), i wanted to ask if it'd be worthy the one ya mentioned or not globally

Heard that it works wonders when it comes to drivers' loading, just not sure about the apps etc.. Though being an NVME or M.2, whatever, requires to do something specific to make it detected on W10 install or put a cloned Macrium Reflect image in it?

ASUS X570 TUF GAMING PLUS for reference (With a STABLE BIOS from a few months ago)

If you are using an addon PCI card that holds m.2 you might. But if your motherboard has a m.2 slot on it, it shouldn't need anything for windows to see it. Screw it in, push power button, install windows on that drive just like normal.

Now if you want to raid multiple ones that might need some bios setting set.

Just make sure that the M.2 setting in bios is set to PCIE, not SATA (unless you buy a SATA SSD in M.2 form factor which is kinda daft to so).
