Oh jeez...

So, I'm moving back to Hungary on Monday, and I'll be using my old laptop for a couple days. Decided to get things out of the way and update the OS and various stuff on it now...and holy crap I'm already missing my system drive SSD, even though they won't be picking up my desktop until tomorrow.

You never realize how good you have it compared to your old rigs until you're forced to go back, even for a little bit.

The less said about using a microscopic laptop monitor after enjoying my ultrawide on my desk for years the better...not looking forward to the next week or so...

If they don't get their brains straight about this Brexit business, then yes, most likely. Might move to Germany or something once the pandemic is more or less under control.

My company just made me redundant because the blanket 80% furlough subsidy was discontinued. No-deal brexit is pretty much a certainty at this point, and with a ton of people losing their jobs left and right, it's highly unlikely that I'd find a job that is safe and pays well enough. It's only a matter of time before the UK economy goes into a deep depression and might as well jump ship while possible.

With my last paycheck, room deposit and tax refund, I should have enough money to coast for at least a year, if not longer. Thankfully my family has been trying to convince me to move back since the pandemic started, so I won't have to worry about rent while I'm at home.

My biggest fear right now is that I can catch covid while traveling. I'm fat, and used to smoke, so I'm not exactly low-risk. No diabetes AFAIK, but I'm not really a model of health. Razz

But that's quite off topic. I posted to whine about having to use a HDD for a bit. Laughing

^^Aye, it hit the iceberg months ago, and I'm surprised it's still afloat^^

Too busy with all this CV19 nonsense to properly secure a deal, but rather throw out constant laughable bullshit day after day instead. There are no good times coming for the UK, its a shit show, and were well past the point of recovery now. I don't blame anyone wanting to leave.

Absolutely no point. I'll only use the laptop to tide me over while my PC gets home. 1-2 weeks at the very max. I think I'll survive on playing a bit more Factorio and watching porn while in mandatory house quarantine.

It's just that I got used to having a 3 year old, bloated and messy windows install responding instantly to every press of a button.

On the other hand I'll just get used to having a slow and ponderous windows experience, and going back to an SSD will be all the sweeter. Razz

I have taken an old 2.5 external hard drive 3.0 apart after the hard drive died. I transplanted a Crucial 500GB SSD into it. The read/write speeds are 270/253...is it the hard drive enclosure causing the lack of speed? Should I buy a proper SSD external enclosure? Thank you

After further research I found out that USB 3.0 is a bottleneck for an SSD but compared to a regular external hard drive which reads/writes at 86/84 I will take SSD 270/253

I'm having a problem or maybe it's just the way it is? The SSD enclosure I made from an old external 2.5 hard drive has a 500GB Crucial SSD in it. The read/write speeds are 270/250. One time I tested it and it was 550/530. All other tests have been 270/250? I don't understand what is going on?

Crucial is what's going on. 250MB/sec at first 2GB of a larger mkv file. Goes down to 30MB/second after 3GB and BELOW 7MB/sec for the rest of the file. Happens every time. Slower than any thumb drive I have around. My model is BX500, if yours is MX500 you should be in a better position.

But I have another Crucial 500GB inside the PC sata connection to the mobo and it reads/writes at 550/540? And that drive is 80% full. I'm thinking it's the USB 3.0/2.5 hard drive enclosure I made from an old seagate hard drive that is showing slow read/write speeds?

If I bought a dedicated SSD enclosure I think it might fix the problem?

Is the enclosure USB? If its an old USB enclosure for a spinning disk the USB controller on it might be a 2.0 USB.
Even if the plug is blue, if it was a cheaper one they could have cut cost by putting in a 2.0 or lower quality USB controller on it knowing no one would get over 2.0 speeds on a spinning 2.5 inch disk hooked to it.

I got an old Western Digital MyBook external(or whatever it was called..something like that) I tore apart for a hack job external USB disk reader for copying files off HD people bring me to save stuff off of, and it SAYS USB 3.0, but regardless of what I put on it 60-70mb/s is all I get out of it.

@DXWarlock...I thought that but it does read/write 270/250 so that alone shows it is USB 3.0. When I plug the drive into a USB 2.0 black plug it read/write is 49/42 so it is definitely a USB 3.0

When I use HDDSCAN v1.4 it labels the enclosure Seagate Backup+ SCSI Disk Drive

It could just be that because the enclosure was only intended to be used with a slower mechanical hard drive, the internal SATA -> USB adaptor is not fast enough to handle the full speed of the SSD.

Well to reassure my thoughts and get the full SSD read/write speeds I am replacing the Crucial MX500GB with a Samsung 860 500GB in the enclosure and see how that goes????

When I put the Samsung 860 500GB into the enclosure I got the same read/write speeds.
250/240
I just bought a external Seagate 500GB and I plugged it into the USB 3.0 front panel on my PC and it reads at 550/540....
So I believe it was the hacked Seagate 2.5 USB 3.0 case that was the culprit???

PHEW! Glad that's over!!! LOL

I dont think its the drive myself.
Any drive on a controller board -> USB is going to be way slower than sata/m.2.

Especially if its an external backup drive case that had a spinning drive. Because even if its USB 3.2 the controller board in it didn't need to be built for any speed faster than what a spinning drive could give it. It was built to a price point, and if they never expected it to bypass 300mb/s why overbuild and add cost to the controller that will never be needed?

I'd suggest just spend the $30-$40 and get a proper external docking bay if you want all the speed it can do, it wont be as fast as direct on MB..but will be as fast as HD->controller->USB can do for throughput with overheard for each step of data type translation.

Jesus fucking christ what is this? Installed it in a ssd port and now it disabled a few of my sata ports (the one with windows on) and now i find out i should have switche port for my 1070 also to the bottom port. What kinda puzzle is this? Nothing about it is obvious and the gfx card moving i'd never know unless i stumbled upon the info in a video.

I hate the internet sometimes. After i installed the intel 665 2tb my system is so slow its unusable, and aparently im the only person on the planet with this issue. All issues i find are "slow boot of 30 seconds" jesus christ if this was that easy. Just spent nearly 10 minutes getting windows loaded.

Aorus z390 wifi pro

Been slowly updating everything and crossing fingers

Edit: PC is not so slow now after chipset and bios updates, but it's still somewhat slow. It's not as it should be.

Edit 2: Well, i suspect it might be my gpu acting weird. A simple process like clicking and holding while dragging the blue box across the screen gets very laggy. Funny thing is that a gpu test i just did gave me an 82% score. Who knows whats going on Laughing

Sounds like it could also be you are out of PCI lanes. As the z390 has 24 lanes total [I believe].
Video card is 16 of them. You'd have 8 left over. NVME would be 4, so 4 left for other things.
(And the GPU slot might be chipset based. you used up more than 16 the CPU provided. Or vice versa and used more than the board added to that 16 and had to put it on the other 'set' of them.)
Intel’s 9th generation Core CPUs feature 16 PCIe lanes, which are dedicated to the x16/x8 slots for GPUs or PCIe-slot SSDs.

If that's what it is the MB manual should tell you which get priority if you plug in things that use more than your CPU gives.

Thanks for the input but this is almost watergem quality stupid. Well, it was a mistake but a stupid one nonetheless. I managed to unplug the watercooler when i swapped out some drives earlier and i noticed the cpu fan wasn't running. Also the clocks for memory and cpu were reset. Now it's all working just fantastic. Thanks though!

I want to buy an SSD for my good ol' desktop to make a primary/system drive. I have this mobo:

www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5248&dl=1#ov

The problem is that I already have two SATA disks in there and I don't want to buy a SATA SSD and have two extra cables etc. Can I get a PCI-Express disk?

i doubt it. there is no slot for a nvme ssd on this motherboard and even a pci-e nmve expansion card will not fit, at least as long if you got a gpu in the pci-e slot.
but even then, it seems to be pci-e 2.0 so i don't know how much speed you will lose.

just buy another normal ssd Razz

Now ... how do I migrate my Windows 8.1 installation smoothly to it? I haven't connected it yet.
