I don't need to watch that, manual is best ofc. Unless there's heavy traffic in ur daily commute, but once it breaks its shit ur better off buying a new car.
Soo.. last week was bad. I guess my turbo or engine shat themselves.. Anyhow got my car yesterday back, new engineblock under full warranty Made for Autobahn eh?

No its not better. With the new auto trannies, m/t is something the overly manly men can lie themselves is better. It's not, you cannot shift more efficiently than something that was programmed to check all the engine's parameters so it can shift. you cannot shift faster than an a/t.
"only purists drive m/t is such a big bullshit" AT trannies have better performance, better fuel efficienvy, better co2 and way way more comfy.
I drive an m/t btw, but i really don't see the point in just chewing the gears anymore.
@Danyutz I understand you like trannies and thats ok. But you cannot expect everyone to love trannies like you do.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

I'm not arguing its convenience and advantages. But I'm more interested in reliability, affordable repair/maintenance and long-term ownership.
Maybe I should get out of this thread before I get farted on by someone's unnecessarily loud exhaust.
Cause I had to take a diesel as I drive too many km... And this was the sportiest option to fit into my budget. The other alternative was a fully kitted 330d, but they simply didn't release it in time The S4 is of course significantly quicker, but I had to go quite barebone from configuration perspective
Ah yes, forgot the new S4 comes with a smoky furnace instead of a fine petrol engine. But agree with you in the performance aspect against BMW, you needed a 335d to beat the Audi.
Sorry, it was the M340d i was refering to (335d was on the old gen), that one should have more powah and torque. ZF gearbox is better than what Audi is using, i think the car is also lighter, so should be there in the books.
But I think it's more expensive than the S4 as well?
Same torque, similar PS, I assume the BMW is still quicker. Even my 420d's ZF felt 10 times quicker than whatever 8 gear automatic is in this S4. And the m340d is cheaper But as I said, last year not even the 330d was available..
manaual
engaging, light, simple, cheap
it is possible to change gears in under 1sec
is a chore in traffic
automatic with hydro-transformer (ZF,../Old style)
very smooth shifts, perfect for people that want to get from point A to point B in the most comfortable way
heavy, complex, expensive, slow shifts, power loss
* and before you start with "it shifts instantly" the hydro is slipping constantly below a certain RPM (2-3k) - yes it changed the gear alright, but it will take 2 more sec to lock the hydro fully.. why do you think it's so smooth if it's so fast..
automatic dual clutch (DSG,PDK,.. New style)
almost instant shifting, virtually no power loss, brutal going fast in a straight line, convenient in traffic, the transmission for fast, constant acceleration
heavy, complex, expensive, usually can't handle big NM
on auto it's shifting gears at inappropriate times - you'd better get shift paddles
sometimes will shift slowly if you request a gear that is not prepared or at kickdown - you will have to change your driving behavior in order to get along with the DSG - you'll have to start anticipating and accelerating before you want it to shift gears or give it sufficient time to kickshift, etc..
* expensive for auto transmissions also includes changing oil every 60k km on hydro and wet double clutch
you'd better do it even if the service tells you "it's lifelong", if you want to drive your car over 150k km in total that is..
