I physically can't browse the Steam forums anymore these days, it's the only place where stupidity and low-level trolling go hand in hand so well that it's become one single entity of neuron-killers Okay Laughing

The developer's answer is the typical yadda yadda one, to justify the laziness.
Quote:
The game is indeed locked at 30fps, due to actions/events being dependent on that frame rate, and the amount of actions/instances on screen at once in a variety of situations within the limitations of our game engine.

I enjoy 60fps games as much as the next person. I prefer a consistent frame rate overall, regardless of 30 or 60. I never had much of an issue with action games like Bloodbourne/Souls series running at 30 once I dug into it, though I can understand if others feel differently.

He's one of them

It's a shame, because the game itself is consistently good in my opinion. If you wear the stuttering-friendly cinematic glasses, it's one of the most satisfying and inspired indie games of late, some sort of atmospheric extra-lite pixel Dark Souls. Razz

So I played it for a bit and the game is gorgeous looking, but at the same time, it's a nightmare visually, pretty hard to understand the different planes that exist at one time on the screen. Even the map is incredibly hard to understand because of the art style.

I also don't really like the controls. The fact that the aim controls the direction of your melee attacks felt really bad at first, but it's ok once the "crosshair" shows up on screen, still feels kind of weird. The real problem is that the aim controls your dash direction, it feels awful.

And yes, the 30 fps lock is also an issue, although I could get used to it.

Sadly, I'm not sure this is a game I can really play.

Does anyone have the file hashes on GOG Version and Update?

I have a few GOG games and it seems they are all signed with the same SHA-1(lol) cert. That should probably be a good enough check but wouldn't mind the additional reassurance if someone can provide.

I don't get this 8-bit pixel-nostalgia at all. I was there during the 8-bit pixel-era, then the 16-bit era with higher resolution and more colors. Been there, done that and I can play those games on any of my ZX-machines, C64, C128, Amiga 500, Amiga 1200, Amiga 3000...

I was there also, it was an era I grew up in and I love the throwback with the 8/16bit STYLE games -- but let's be honest here Frant, you cannot possibly think HLD would have been remotely possible, on any system, from back in the 8/16bit era. It wouldn't have even been possible in the 32bit era either :\ That's the downside to this (IMO!!!) irrational pixel hate some people have, they assume that "pixels!" means "NES games" and it's simply not true.

Pixel art is just another art style, and while some games play on nostalgia (like Shovel Knight) most of them are just stylised artwork.

Even a retro game like Shovel Knight wouldn't have been possible on the Nes or even Snes from how I understood it due to using certain advanced effects, Retro City Rampage did a special version of the game that actually do work on a Nes emulator from what I've read and then they even did a DOS version.

Yup, there are plenty of NES/SNES/PS1 "looking" games that we have now and people grumble over, but they would never have been possible on that hardware of the time - it's more of an aesthetic appeal rather than a hardware limited one. As for RCR, it actually began life as a GTA clone on the NES called "Grand Theftendo" but grew from that. The prototype NES ROM for RCR is a stunning achievement Very Happy

Haha yeah, it's mostly about trial-and-error, especially the bosses. Try to face one enemy at a time, don't get too greedy (akin to Dark Souls' approach), explore every single corner (even walls, they hide lots of secret rooms), get upgrades/fancy moves like the charge attack and/or multi dash skill, and you're set to conquer all the 4 'directions'.

There isn't a specific order, but the Eastern one has the easiest boss in my opinion.
Unfortunately the nasty framerate lock also affects the sensitivity (and the wonky mouse controls don't help either), playing with a gamepad is highly recommended unless you want to become the incredible Hulk in terms of rage. Even I had to embrace it Very Happy Laughing
A really solid game, but hampered by silly technical limitations :<
