If a show is critically acclaimed and has interesting stories to tell why would Netflix shitcan it? It will get another season.
Some other shows will get the axe.

Oh man, only 3 episodes into this new season and I'm completely captivated. So much quality packed in.
It's nice to see some proof from time to time of Netflix being capable of delivering really good shows among all the utter crap they constantly excrete.

Our economy is based constant growth, parallel to this businesses are based on constant growth. A business, and in particular the shareholders, don't care much about the current profit and/or subs. They care about new subs each year, so creating new shows constantly is better for their model.

Yeah Netflix has no problem cancelling shows that already got them recurring subs. They create new shows to get more subs. Not to create content. For each cancelled show, they lose a handful of subs and retain the rest. New show new subs. Keep them interested for a year or two and there won't be a issue keeping it in someone's budget to continue.

thats true but at the same time not a single netflix show that was popular/critical aclaimed got a sudden cancelation. after the "growth" period they usually anounce how many more seasons will they do or just announce a final one. its enough to look at their other critical aclaimed shows and how many more seasons they got from their original planned.
keep in mind the first season launched 2 years ago so its like a new show, many probably unsuscribbed and subscribbed now again.
not to mention david fincher also launched netflix with house of cards and its very unlikely to almost impossible it will get a sudden cancelation, not to mention season 2 got announced even before s1 launched.

yeah well the show is from 2017 and around that time netflix didnt produced so much crap, these days its all about releasing as much shows as they can to fill every genre no matter the quality

Yes but they have other shit to cancel, don't they? Have they ever cancelled a critically acclaimed series that had new ground to cover?

This has already been explained in the articles.
- Because their research shows old shows do not attract new subscribers, but new shows do.
- Because shows get significantly more expensive beyond season 3, as in "millions of dollars" more expensive.
- Because their research shows that people will be like "oh no, they canceled my favorite show!!".. but then get distracted by some other show and go about their day. So Netflix do not anticipate any significant backlash.
Therefore, by canceling the old shows they free-up budget to make new shows and GROW.
Or at least that's what they are thinking and doing, whether it will work out for them, we'll see.

Season 1 only got 1 Emmy nomination. It didn't bring awards buzz. No awards buzz, no strong reason for Netflix to keep it beyond season 3.
| Quote: | | As for acclaim, I hear anecdotally that strong reviews from critics, which One Day at a Time has in spades, could get a show a second-season renewal at Netflix (but rarely a third). Beyond that, only major awards recognition counts because awards — along with strong word of mouth/curiosity — are thought to help drive subscriptions. Despite its acclaim, One Day at a Time, perhaps hindered by its multi-camera format, has not been able to land big nominations. |
But maybe season 2 will get more recognition?

I think 3 seasons is more than enough to stop a show before it takes a wrong turn to shitville. The number of shows which were still interesting after 3-4 seasons I can count on one hand.

I finished this new season last night and for me it was kind of boring, the first season was much better. Manson and Son of Sam were probably the most interesting parts of this season as without them it would probably be a totally forgettable season. If not for Fincher and the other big names behind the scenes I would not be surprised if it was cancelled after this season but I could see them going at least one more season to see if maybe it will become a critical darling for Emmy award season.

Almost exactly my thoughts. I enjoyed nearly the whole thing but then came that weird and lukewarm season finale. They better re-focus for next season on the "mindhunting" part.

Same as The OA

Difference is, that Fincher put Netflix on the map with House of Cards.
So he has more leeway.

True. If they keep it going it will be so that they don't upset Fincher and not because "but we have a 5 year arc". The later means nothing to Netflix.

IMO they should have kept going with the interviews, even if they were done by torv and the other guy, just to break up the pacing (but in a good way) of every episode a bit. Also, I'll take a guess and say that most of us are not really interested in politics and bureaucracy as this show seems to think we are

There is a slimy serial murderer at large that likes to prey on young and brilliant TV shows as a source of abnormal and perverse gratification, the FBI calls it the S02 Killer. Mindhunter was going to be the next designated victim but with a swift move the show managed to snatch itself from the jaws of death in time, it is now secured in a safe place, albeit still overcoming its psychological scars.
(All kidding aside) The second season was indeed structured more like a conventional thriller, with alas only part of the brilliance and uniqueness that made S01 really special. It still qualifies as great television though, I was not familiar at all with the Atlanta murders and that made the subject mysterious and fascinating to me. Once again the directing job was impeccable with the peculiar gloomy 70s atmosphere and characters sporting all their mannerisms, the actor portraying Wayne Williams could be so unsettling despite showing calmness hiding the uptight mood, without mentioning guest stars like the logorrheic Manson (shame about his limited screen time though). Let's hope the next season will go back to being fully Mindhunter-y, assuming that the serial Netkiller doesn't strike again.

As Fincher is busy with other Netflix stuff, he released the cast from their contracts to go and look for work elsewhere. As such the series is put on indefinite hold.
Once the actors are let go from a series.. good luck getting them back. I think it's very likely that's it for the series.
