Well, I'm only looking to try the game (for lack of a demo / public beta, ffs) to see if I like it at all.

Weeeeelllll. i play it daily, seriously its the only thing i play with 4 other friends. lvl 44.
Months ago you had spawns being too close (woods, customs) but that was because everyone spawned on the same side of the map. Now you spawn around the map, decently separated. I havent died/fought 5 mins into a game since a LONG time ago.
Its not a shit game, it has its flaws, the only fucking shit i could say today is that fucking hackers are back, they live in the Labs map, the most fun one, but since 1 month ago its full of hackers. The other maps are fine.
PS: Im very critical of games, im here to have FUN, i fucking hate a lot of shit games have today, luckily tarkov has kept very fun for me (until weeks ago due to fucking hackers)

There's never a point of no return. You can always just go for a scav run. That's free gear right there if you escape, and then there's the so called hatchet runs, you spawn in completely empty, except for your melee weapon and you secure container. Those two things you'll never lose. So even if you stuff 4 packs cigarettes in your alpha, die, you still came out with a profit (obviously don't stuff it with cigarettes, go for something more valuable).
Hell, if you spawn your scav in with a keycard (random part of the scav equipment pool), that will sell for enough money to set you up for several cheap raids all by itself.

Don't forget to add the VAT on top of their listed price, they "forgot" to display the actual amount you'll pay.

I don't see this game being successful long-term unless they add it to Steam or something as this genre of games has fallen out of favor already as it was the hyped sort of thing before the BR craze so it will be interesting to see what really ends up happening with it.

thx man, i still only understand half of it tho. what is a scav run, how can i kill people with a hatchet only? i tried with macarov and a few mags, it went abysmal bad. this game could really need a sandbox/tutorial mode just to get a hang of it OR i am getting too old for that. lets hope for the first.
can you link any guide that isn´t outdated? i know thats like asking "do my work" but please, you seem to understand whats going on in Tarkov

You arrived at the end of a season lets say.... everyone is over lvl 40, everyone uses body armor and helmets, expensive ammo etc.
But its still fun, you will face many high lvl players but its totally doable.
Basically you want to start doing quests from the traders. Learn the maps (download them), look weapon boxes, loot green boxes. etc. get items. Quests give you levels, money, ammo, weapons, unlocks new stuff sometimes.
Personally, being a low level, i would play Factory, with a TT pistol, good ammo, kill scavs, get they backpack, their weapons and exit. Factory will probably not have big groups playing, maybe solo players and you can avoid them if u are paying attention.
Playing factory, watching videos about ammo and armor, should teach you what tarkov is about gunplay wise.
After that, get some mates, use discord or anything, and start using 7.62 (vepr, sks) weapons since the PS ammo from that caliber should kill players with armor.
This game is about "realism" you wont win all fights, this game is hard, you lose a lot of gear, pay it no mind, playing with gear is fun, even if u lose all of it, play scavs, you will gain a LOT playing scavs (scavs are just a free play with free loot where u keep everything u take out of the map)
Play scavs in customs, customs has bosses and a lot of fights, so u can arrive and find a lot of dead people and extra gear they couldnt take home.
This is BR, this wont die soon, this game is very unique and i like it, even tho im about to stop playing it until the new patch to avoid these fucking hackers in labs

Sorry, no guides from me, I learned everything from playing, some ppl from here, and watching YT vids (and I'm still utterly shit at the game, and getting sniped 5 times in a row gets me frustrated very easily so I'm rarely playing more than a couple runs at once).
Scav run: when you press the play button, the first menu that comes up lets you chose between a Scav (left) and a PMC (right) raid. In PMC mode, you spawn in with you main character with his equipped gear. That's the main mode, you take your own stuff, and lose everything outside your secure container if you die. A scav run however will give you control over a random AI "scav" character (the guys who always shout russian at you during fights, and sometimes at each other when idle). You spawn a little later into the raid, so some player may already be dead/out. You don't have a secure container, but other AI scavs will not attack you, unless you damage them first. Since you spawn in with the gear the scav was already wearing, if you manage to escape, that's already free gear. Whatever else you loot is extra.
Hatchet runs: Killing is not necessary. You only have two items on you, your melee weapon and your secure container (a 2x2 alpha in your case, I would assume, better ones can be bought or won through quests, I think). Whatever you put in your alpha will stay with you even if you're killed. So you spawn in, start looting, and whatever you get in there, is yours.
But you can sneak up on unaware AI scavs, bop them in the head a few times, and their gear is yours (just remember that Scavs are like bananas, they come in bunches).
You'll see plenty of PMC people with just a hatchet running at you, even if you're kinda geared up, because they have nothing to lose.
For early pistol runs Makarovs are a good choice, but they are not really good against players if they are kitted out. Amazing at popping idle scavs though. Just avoid/hide from players when you can.
Sandbox mode: You're in luck. When you start a new run, there is an option somewhere along the menus to go into an offline raid. You can set the AI difficulty, numbers, etc. Since it's offline, nothing that happens there will have any impact on the main account, but a perfect way to get used to the maps, learn AI behaviour, test weapons, etc.

Most likely, but it's already a pretty fun BR-ish game. The new additions come quite regularly, but there's no point in waiting for a final version any time soon. What's keeping me from playing regularly is that they keep resetting progression after bigger updates, and I really don't feel like investing time and effort into something that will be wiped in a couple months.

Wipes are actually fun, after a while when everyone is walking around like a nuclear tank and they send you all back to pistols, its actually very fun, because the gunplay reverts to skills and tactics. Going around with pistols and sks and single fire is a lot of fun for me. i dont mind it, but i hated the grindy quests they put this time around.

Btw they put battleye in the game, first time in a LONG time i feel fights are fucking legit. No weird headshots out of nowhere, no robots coming after me for no reason.
They really made the best move they could have done.
Also the new patch coming up lets you create loadouts, so you dont spend 5 mins getting a weapon modded to your liking.
I think this patch will be the best time to start.

About damn time. All the fiddly fuckery between raids is one of the bigger reasons why I'm still not playing regularly.

Yea, i found that i could use the flea market and add what i needed in my wish list, so every raid i go to wish list, buy everything and i just have to assemble the weapon. Helps.
But this loadout thing its fucking retarded why they didnt add that day one...

Far from it, ive been playing it constantly since the Battleeye introduction and boy have i enjoyed it. All my fights have been glorious.
This patch will definitely improve the game, so many QOL stuff and performance tweaks. Hope it all goes smooth cause its definitely promising.

The first person camera / implementation looks damn cool. Wish more games with first person perspective would use something similar.
(just compare this to The Outer Worlds, for example )

It's not a fair comparison because this is a shooter while The Outer Worlds is a hybrid of sorts.

If it's a first person game, then one of it's main role is immersion. Be it a parkour, shooting, puzzle game or - even much more important(!) - an RPG game.
Otherwise I'd could have been a 3rd person, an isometric or top town game...
