Hello everyone!

Today, we are pleased to get you the latest patch for The Bard´s Tale IV: Barrows Deep.

Patch 3 introduces additional enhancements to graphic settings, character art, localization, as well as further addressing remaining issues like ability bugs, optimization of loading times, and stability across the game.

With Patch 3 done, please allow us a few personal words: Here at inXile, we are always committed to making quality RPGs, and we are totally devoted to what we are doing. The Bard’s Tale IV: Barrows Deep is a game that we poured our hearts into, and every single one of us is very sad that the release of the game we are so proud of was overshadowed by performance issues. Of course, we wish that we had caught these things at launch and have been working overtime to correct them as quickly as we can. For those of you affected, we are truly sorry for any bad experience that you might have had.

We hope you will enjoy the changes and if you do, we would be very grateful for a user review if you haven't written one yet. Of course, the same applies if you were forced to write a negative review in the past, but would be so kind to reconsider now if the issues that prevented you to enjoy the game were addressed in the meantime.

Thank you very much for your patience, and your ongoing support. It means the world to us.

With Patch 3 being released, we are now focusing on our original goal of enhancing the game by adding many additional features after launch. Legacy Mode, controller support, and grid movement will only be some of them and we will talk more about those items and more in the near future. Friends of Mac and Linux will also be happy to hear that we are working on those versions as well.

For details on this patch, please check out the notes below:

Updated Fairy Golf music so that it plays through the entire fairy gold arena.

Hey list...*FOOORE!* *BIFF* Very Happy

Unless it actually has a fairy golf course, I am intrigued now.

EDIT: Though it's probably meant to be fairy gold so no golfing.

Them flighty fuckers love the bling after all. Razz

(Unless it's Wizardry, then they go ninja and decapitate with extreme prejudice.)

Anybody knows a gfx tweak or something ? My game keeps pausing too often. Every 10 footsteps, everytime I attack someone, everytime I open the inventory.. too much every.

The game will leave Early Access (:face) with a Director's Cut version coming out this year:

Quote:
We are still in development on the free DLC patch, which also includes a number of other player-requested features and items off of our own post-release support list. As the scope of the patch has expanded (and continues to), we decided that it warranted a more formal title than 2.0. When released, it will turn the game into “The Bard’s Tale IV: Barrows Deep - Director’s Cut”. We are introducing several new features, most notably the previously mentioned DLC and an engine update, a larger undertaking allowing us to further improve performance and optimization.

Quote:

- A new dungeon and story line featuring new enemy types
- New items (master-crafted gear and Dwarven Weapons)
- Inventory filtering
- Expanded balancing efforts across the entire game (combat, economy, abilities, etc.) based on player feedback and our own testing
- A new Song of Exploration allowing you to bypass puzzles if those aren't your jam
- Additional character portraits
- A new intro animatic
- Expanded work on improving localization
- Updated game engine
- Improved performance and stability
- Improved level art
- Reworked main menu
- Numerous bug fixes

thought this game was quite good tbh, would be worth waiting for a polished edition. Hopefully they can improve performance some too, also i dont think Ultra > Medium changes the experience much.

Indeed, I had a good time with it as well despite the roughness/iffy UI, it is a competent product with a solid core. It just needed to spend more time in the oven (as always Razz), though thankfully looks like most of the annoyances will be taken care of.

Not sure what the Directors Cut end result size will be after it installs but I am currently downloading it and it is 27 gigs compared to the 47 gig download on Steam that the original release was.

From a discussion on RPG Codex it seems they adjusted the visuals a bit.

Kinda weird to throw out dynamic shadows and replace them with a baked solution though character shadows are retained but currently broken, seems reflections might be out as well probably leading to this being that one UE4 game not using "Oh Shiny!" FX on anything remotely wet or light reflective. Very Happy

Other adjustments and changes as well and hopefully this also does address the actual game issues and bugs people experienced, guessing this edition will eventually outright replace the base version and it's a free upgrade for existing owners though I find it odd that a modern game would need to run with baked shadows so I suppose UE4 might not have been a good fit at least not without more time and work to resolve issues like this without having to significantly change the visual fidelity down the line to get performance to more acceptable levels.

EDIT: Some of the comparisons show a few favorable things for the DC though but others are less than stellar.
