I think the game is okish.
The problem is that the classical era is a hard one for a paradox strategy game.
Rome or an other nation is supposed to dominate europe, so this is what you get, you'll have an OP empire after a couple of hours without any real competition. But since paradox games are all about expansion this is boring, managing a stable empire over time is not fun in a paradox title, while a title about ancient rome should be al about managing you're huge empire in the late game.

Much more than other PDX strat games this game feels like a board game rather than a sim imo.

A mate and myself have been working on big content mod adding tons of (historical) events to major nations (PRY , ROM and CAR so far). We felt the omission of this historical aim was one we could correct easiest ,as opposed to mechanics, mana , ai or buildings. We had a great buidling mod working but without AI build weights being accessible there's no use in playing with it imo

So far this events thing is shaping up nicely, having very interesting (much more historically accurate) effect on borders many years in.

It would be fine if you played as a dynasty instead of the state.

Play as one of the senatorial tribes trying to exert dominance over the republic. That way, even if you manage to grow big, you'd still have to deal with internal affairs.

People expecting a finished game at release in 2019 Surprised guess they must have been living under a rock since 2000 or something Razz on average i wait around 2 years after release, but it depends on how rough it seems, type of game and what to expect in terms of patches (if any).

PDX have been on a downward spiral for years now. The last game they developed that was good on release was EUIV. The dlc money from CK2 and EUIV fucked them up.

It's a lot better than at launch although it's still in the skippable catergory. Still not anywhere close to CK2 or EUIV and I doubt it will have a long development window since PDX apparently were disappointed by the reception and sales.

I've played one campaign, and it's really fun at first but has less replayability than EU4 due to not having as many systems in it yet... or at least that's my impression. So if you enjoyed EU4 and want something with a similar flavor but different mechanics, it's certainly worth a playthrough.

Took it for another spin after the 1.4 update. They managed to improve some mechanics, but it's still the same boring, shallow concept. It's flawed to its core and essentially they need to rework it from scratch. And I don't see it happening with the 2k active players they have on average.
