Update to Disgaea 5 Complete Pricing and Release Window
17 AUGUST - NISA_TRAVIS
Hello everyone,

First of all, we'd like to sincerely apologize for the inconvenience that the delay of Disgaea 5 Complete for PC has caused everyone. Today, we have an update for those who have been waiting. We are lowering our price for the title from the original $49.99 (discounted for pre-purchasers to $39.99), now to $39.99 (now available to pre-purchasers for $29.99). The Digital Dood edition of the game, which includes the standard game and art book, will be available for $42.73 (available for pre-purchase for $32.75).

Those who pre-purchased the game back in May will be automatically upgraded to receive the art book from the Digital Dood Edition, free of charge, by purchasing the standard version of the game. Those that did not pre-purchase the title in May will need to purchase the Digital Dood Edition to receive the art book included with purchase.

For those that have already pre-purchased, we thank you for your patience and appreciation. To make sure that no overcharging will occur and ensure the best price for all users, we have requested Valve to refund all purchases of the game to this date. Should you want to repurchase the title, you can now do so on this page and receive the newly lowered price.

This special pricing will continue one week after release of the game. Disgaea 5 Complete will arrive on Steam in October, with a new closed beta test arriving in September. Make sure to follow us on Twitter (@NISAmerica) for immediate updates and notifications regarding the beta.

Thank you for your patience, and we hope you look forward to the game's launch in October.

Sincerely,
NIS America, Inc.

Looks like the NPC allowing for custom maps was taken out of the game, possibly the only change though and I don't know how big of a deal that is but it's a removal of one of the games features.

So the social and network features and they really wish they could have communicated this in advance but they didn't and the announcement now comes after many of the initial buyers will be more than 2 hours into the game, of course.

Not too bothered by the social and network features myself but it's not quite as advertised either and the map editor is a bit of a loss although I suppose they couldn't turn into a offline/single player deal either.

Other than that the port seems solid so far but from my understanding the demo was already pretty good for what NISA's ports have had for initial launch issues before. Very Happy

The second? Oh they've done a lot more than two messes with their localization work.

https://www.reddit.com/r/gamindustri/comments/4q0e99/just_thought_id_share_this_list_of_nisas_fuckups/

Quote:

AR TONELICO ELEMIA, MANA KHEMIA 1 and 2
o Bad string handling leading to complete crash against specific bosses (AT1, MK2) / major part of the extra dungeon enemies (MK1). MK2's crash is rather easy to avoid, though.
o MK1: Unnecessary and flagrant name changes to a variety of playable main characters.
o MK2: Lack of testing in the extra chapter leads to crashes when doing certain tasks if Ulrika is the main character instead of Raze: Student handbook and Job post usage crash the game.

AR TONELICO METAFALICA
o Typographical errors, missing words, and shaky sentences, mistranslation of important game terms, inconsistently-adapted names
o Localization introduced or exposed game-crashing bugs in the game.
o NISA marketed the game based on Sex Appeal, when, in fact, AT2 was intended to be a more serious and thoughtful game, with less emphasis on cheap hooks and a greater focus on the plot, than Ar Tonelico Elemia
o In order to fit English voice acting onto the disc, they cut approximately half of the Japanese voice-acted scenes, leaving many important plot points lacking appropriate impact.

AR TONELICO QOGA
o Typographical errors and untranslated text in various spots on top of their "translation" not even being remotely close to the japanese track and english voice track, what little there is, not even matching the text in some areas.
o Binary Field (DLC episodes) scam where they put out each chapter separate then a few days after a bundle pack which didn't work if you had downloaded the first episode.

HYPERDIMENSION NEPTUNIA
o Neptunia 1 would crash on the dungeon leaderboard screen if it couldn't upload your score while you were on PSN for whatever reason.

HYPERDMENSION NEPTUNIA mk2
o Very questionable localization quality. (bad translation, unfunny jokes/lines added to several dialogues which changed the characters personalities at times)

HYPERSIMENSION NEPTUNIA V
o Very questionable localization quality. (bad translation, unfunny jokes/lines added to several dialogues which changed the characters personalities at times)
o Didn't tell the gamers idol events DLC would not be included, then, when brought to attention, denied any and all knowledge of such DLC.
o Freezing issues with some DLC.

WITCH AND 100 KNIGHT
o Game-crashing bugs (rumor about a GameFAQs user fixing everything and mailed such solution/file to NISA. Still no official support a year from release, nor token mention of any such thing.)
o PS3 overheating (Confirmed to be replicable by person who originally made the post) http://nisamerica.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=14425&start=90

ATELIER ARLAND TRILOGY
o Name changing: Esty Erhart => Esty Dee (S T D = Sexual Transmission Disease, get it? grinhurt)

RHAPSODY DS
o http://www.siliconera.com/2008/10/13/bonus-content-cut-from-rhapsody-ds/
o http://www.siliconera.com/2008/10/14/falling-flat-encountering-rhapsodys-ds-glitches/

DISGAEA 2 PSP
o They fucked up the dlc characters so they don't have voices.
o They decided not to release all the dlc characters, but released the final character, majin hinako.
o Majin hinako unlocks item book collection slots because it assumes you have the other dlc characters.
o Downloading majin hinkao means you can't complete the collection book, effectively killing anyone going for 100%

DISGAEA D2
o Game-crashing SKILLS (several Fire-based)
o OPENING stops abruptly
o Fuuka and Desco were free DLC for the first month after release in Japan and Asia. Day 1 paid DLC in USA and EU.
o CPU melting bug at release

DISGAEA 3
o DLC scam. Purchasing content one by one locks certain content needed for 100% completion. Purchasing as a bundle unlocks it all, for the low price of $50. NISA released vouchers for a limited time as apology.

MUGEN SOULS
o Scrubbing minigame removed over 120 CGs removed. Basically censored extremely lazily. Excuses given over the years were many and varied, but some of them were "We wanted to appeal as much as possible to a wider demographic." "The vocal minority can't put a dent in our wallet." "We find this content creepy." "Unofficial ESRB rep indicated this title has potential for AO (it didn't)" "We found this content distasteful, so you don't want it anyways."
o Created new bugs and glitches not seen in the JP release
o Massive lag during regular battles
o Can fail an area load after a battle forcing you to restart from your previous save
o Released an LE which had bath sponges and a towel even though the bath minigame was removed which was a massive slap to the face which the LE sold poorly(still have copies of the LE on their site).

MUGEN SOULS Z
o Scrubbing minigame removed, over 120 CGs removed. See entry for Mugen Souls
o Elka introduced as the Hero of Water World when she's the hero of the Fire World
o Slumbering Boss battles cause freezes in Mugen Field (Note: this has been patched as of July 2014)

NATURAL DOCTRINE
o Ending is not subbed when using Japanese. When someone asked about this, they were told to use the English dub instead

PSTV
o Won't patch their Vita games for PSTV support, usually defers to Sony despite it being on them. http://nisamerica.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=15423#p836008

CRIMINAL GIRLS INVITATION
o Censored the Punishment Time minigame which has pink fog for every level of each minigame(Never goes away). JP version the pink fog goes away on later levels.
o Removed the voices for the punishment minigames.
o Shoddy translation. Changed "Punishment Time" to "Motivation Time" for the punishment minigame and made the dialogue less lewd.

DANGANRONPA: TRIGGER HAPPY HAVOC
o Various text wrapping, spelling and grammatical issues
o Bug that crashes the game when loading a School Mode save
o Made a scene where a character reveals his true gender to the protag less ambiguous and essentially censored it by changing a line stating that the character put the protag's hand on "her body" to "her chest"

DANGANRONPA 2: GOODBYE DESPAIR
o Text wrapping issues
o "jump hitboxes not working (I'll land on top of somebody directly, but i'll just go through them and sometimes take damage)"
o Various images appear in Japanese when the voices are set to Japanese

OPERATION ABYSS: NEW TOKYO LEGACY
o English dub only, no Japanese audio track. When asked why, NISA said it was because there wasn't enough space on the vita cartridge for it despite the entire game being less than 1.5 GB (vita cartridges can hold up to 4 GB)

FAIRY FENCER F
o Changed character names in the english localization (ex. Alyn to Eryn) due to the translator not liking the way they sounded.

DISGAEA 4 (VITA)
o Bacial with the youngster voice has an english line that will crash the game. friend or foe can crash your game. This can be avoided by playing with japanese voices.

MISC
o Localizers have admitted that they do in fact add things to the script just for the sake of "flavor" http://www.siliconera.com/2010/04/29/nis-america-answer-your-trinity-universe-questions-part-2/#DvhRIbzo9JP9x19t.99

Some are issues and tech others are how they localize and translate things and since it's from 2015 it doesn't include the recent titles although overall they are improving.

Labyrinth of Refrain is getting patched, Ys8 got a good amount of updates and well Disgaea 5 I have no idea what the delay was for but they did something.
(Reschedule the launch window?)

EDIT: Breaking changes are the major issue though, meme translation and insertions are annoying but not as bad and censoring well it has multiple reasons though it seems they have problems sticking to one explanation and reason heh.

Is Ys8's French localization still terrible by the way? I know the English one was updated but I heard the French one wasn't anywhere near as edited.

Wonder how serious this is and how it will affect current projects and then also NISA and their work.

Could be bad.

EDIT: Yeah that must be pretty dire.

Quote:

They release new JP games at a pretty ridiculous clip, and all of them have been selling terribly (from not charting to ~3000 copies) for years. I figured the American branch was keeping them profitable or something.

EDIT: Including ports, they released 12 games in 2016, 13 in 2017, and 15 in 2018. I think wiki is missing a couple too.

Those costs and other finances and those sales.

Oh shit. But nisa making bad decisions all over. Im keeping my eyes peeled on the ys dana game and even though its been at least a year since its release and having tech difficulties(some of them fixed some of them not) they never drop it beneath 20 per cent on sale so yeah maybe if you need money try to sell your broken games for cheaper at least then they might sell.

I mean i want it as well but let's not kid ourselves it doesn't get much more niche then this and you need to slog trough 2 other 100+ hour JRPGs or the story won't make much sense (not to mentions the other 5 Kiseki game necessary to get the rest of the plot...) considering how expensive these games are to localize and how little they sell because of that it certainly won't save NISA.

Actually i think trails series is a lot more popular than we think. It does have "exclusive" releases on most consoles so the playerbase is pretty spread. Nisa is releasing CS3 on PS4 during summer or autumn this year unless something goes wrong. The one thing which might have put some people off is the fact that the crossbell arc never got officially translated.

The unofficial translations are serviceable though, i've played them. AO quite a lot better translation quality than Zero though, but I'll be old and grey before the retranslation is done.

Yeah Cold Steel 1 is fairly self contained and then Cold Steel 2 builds on the prior game and the late-bit brings in Zero which for reasons (Monetary expenses?) is not licensed and translated outside of Japan beyond fan patches which I think are still in editing.

Then Cold Steel 3 goes in with Zero, Sky and a part from Cold Steel 2 New Game+ lasting roughly the entire game and Cold Steel 4 goes even further wrapping up the Erebonia arc and one massive arc of the overarching Trails story if I'm reading this right.
(Recurring characters last seen like a decade ago and numerous plot threads being resumed and concluded.)

Will be interesting to see it continued and I hope the localization of Cold Steel 3 is at least decent though I am also curious how it will stack up with the original Japanese script though I don't know the language so it'll be from what others post for these types of comparisons. (And for XSeed they often adapts their own localization efforts but makes it more natural sounding though a few titles also sees more extensive editing.)

And for NIS it seems NISA is doing alright with licenses and anime in addition to games but NIS seem to have hit a success with Disgaea 5 at 500k sales five years ago and since then routinely under performed or barely even made it to sales listings hitting below 3000 units sold during the critical period a few weks after launch.

I do hope this doesn't complicate the current projects that are in the works but we'll see, NIS already outsources and tries to keep a lower cost and I guess that applies to NISA as well from localization to programming and other areas of development, voice acting I would expect to be one of the key things to keep in budget though as long as it doesn't sound like a 80's - 90's dub porno it should be serviceable. Razz

I also wonder how much Cold Steel and picking up Ys and such might have factored into the costs and expenses for NIS and or NISA since tons of text the game and it's numerous sequels is a tough challenge and the first attempt in Ys8 was pretty rough despite not being anywhere near as text heavy as the Trails games.
