Like it a lot but the combat still fells pretty clunky to me, after playing bayonetta 1&2 recently it's a bit hard to get used to the way DMC combat works again.

is it just me or is the controller button layout (gamepad) in this game kind of weird? i always want to tap RB to hit... (i know i can reconfigure it but couldnt be arsed so far)
I tend to invert the default left/right triggers mappings, it just feels more natural to me - maybe that was the default layout in DMC3 or something, I don't really know, but I always end up pressing the buttons like this naturally.
Game is pretty great, feels good to have a true successor in the series. Combat finally feels great again.
Cutscenes are just awesome and ridiculous in the most DMC sense, I can understand people don't like their gameplay cut like that, but they are so entertaining and are actually a welcome pause after some frantic gameplay to me.
However, I completely agree that the level design is mediocre at best, it's pretty terrible really if I'm being honest with myself, and that gets harder to overlook in 2019 - and DmC did have great levels, the ones I've been through so far have been very unimpressive.
Well, I just decided to get one. But then I realized that after months and months of not having one I didn't want to play games as much as I used to anymore.
So most of the time it just "sits" in my PC case not doing anything ...waiting for cyberpunk and sekiro
+ I don't have much time and I prefer to spend it on good TV shows and films nowadays.

Meh what with backlogs and gaming as a service just play the game a year or two down the line, not like it's going to go anywhere (Short of being a movie license on a volatile franchise like Marvel seems to be cough, well digital preservation takes care of that too I guess.) and with GAAS even if DMC 5 here might not fall under that servicing model it mostly just ensures you have a fully patched and DLC complete edition when you do get around to trying out whenever there's time later on.
EDIT: My recommendation at least even if I don't always follow that myself, don't really gain much from hurrying and playing the latest releases immediately unless you're worried about spoilers and such that tends to pop up though much of it can be avoided. Suppose for this game there might not be any major surprises though.
overrated game tbh and i love my hack and slash games
very bland level design, every level feels mostly the same and with the damn flashbacks i feel like im playing the same levels over and over, how many roots can you cut? feels like 10 years ago
so many damn loading screens and cutscenes i just want to play the fucking game, i feel like there is not that much gameplay couse youre always interrupted by a short cutscene or loading screen.
characters, cutscenes, graphics, music, combat all are great
overall game is not bad nor is it great, its just ok, i say a little above your average hack and slash game but seriously god of war 3 from ps3 is miles ahead of this game, even the dmc reboot was better
Level design in most DMC games is bad they're all about the combat and that's where the game is simply great, especially playing as Dante the depth and skill ceiling of the combat is extremely high.
Anyone with incredibly shitty taste who likes that edgelord remake DmC with its crappy shallow combat directed at 6 year olds should really just quit gaming altogether, sorry

But the world flip upside down and shit, masterclass level design!!1
dosent matter how good the combat is if the level design is bad, id rather play the arena mode where enemies constantly spawn than replay through the story all again
I love 3 and 4. Never played DMC remake (it's in my forever backlog).
This looks good on videos except the annoying super cool hipster van lady. is she as annoying as she looks in trailers ?

You cannot be serious that you find her annoying... Nico is actually a really awesome new character and a great addition to the DMC crew. Some scenes with her are absolutely hilarious. I also love the fact that Nico and her van basically function on Looney Tunes logic, it's so ridiculous at times!

If you liked 3 & 4's tone, you're bound to like 5's and Nico, I had the same apprehension you did about her being too annoying but she's a good fit for the DMC universe and its whole over-the-top tone, she even made Nero less lame to me, which is quite the achievement
The level design is rather bad and shows little evolution or difference from 3 or 4, and while DmC's level design was better which isn't that hard to achieve, it wasn't stellar either, it was just a little more imaginative and open-ended than usual. I'm quite surprised DmC5's level design shows so little evolution, it must have been a conscious decision on their behalf not to change things up.
I do agree that the only reason I'd go through the levels again would be the increased difficulty levels or trying to get that S rank for the sake of the achievement mostly, and that I'd rather fire the Bloody Palace up as well if I just want the fights.

I prefer amazing level design over a crappy Dante's hat. Thank you very much.
And as for the depth of playing as Dante.. sure.. however, this depth doesn't mean much if he steamrolls everything in the game regardless of the weapon used
Try the hardest difficulty settings, you'll see ! You'll be on the receiving end of the steamrolling
I believe The_Zeel was really focusing on the combat rather than anything else, and DmC did fuck up the whole over-the-top thing, it went from the usual DMC to something edgelord-y, indeed.
I wish the level design were better, but I honestly don't give it much attention, it's not what I'm looking for when I'm playing DMC and I already suspected it would suck in advance.
Ideally, we would have gotten DmC's improved ( didn't think it was amaze balls either, but anything will look wonderful compared to never-ending closed rooms+corridors ) level design and every thing else for DMC5, but seems like the CAPCOM devs don't want to put in any effort in that I mean, I expected shitty level-design, but I didn't think it'd be the exact same scope and everything as DMC1/3/4 either, there are no more hardware limitations to try and justify it Really lazy of them.
I'm halfway through and enjoying it well enough, but the reviews seem a bit overhyped to me.
I also came to realize that I prefer the Bayonetta games over the DMC franchise. Bayo allows for multiple playing styles in a single character while DMC5 locks you into a certain style, depending on which character you are required to use in a level.
In this day and age with so much bullshit in games, unfinished crap, "games as a service" etc, this and RE2 Remake are just great.
Exactly what I need. Well crafted games, beautiful design and graphics and top notch gameplay.
It's not perfect, it's not for everyone, but what game ever was?
Yeah I can understand the level design criticism , there's more you could do with this setting, but as I'm playing I just don't give a shit. I'm just really enjoying playing this.
Loving the characters, the cutscenes and the story is quite intriguing though I'm not quite finished yet so who knows how that'll end up. It's cool so far though.
Capcom also gave me Monster Hunter last year and that was an unexpected favorite of mine.
Now where's Dragon's Dogma 2, Capcom? That'd be the finishing blow here. (I know it's the same director as DMCV so hopefully we'll get that next)
