Well, im ticketed mig, tig, stick, flux - all position, carbon, stainless and alumminum - CWB and AWS. Im also licensed to fix the electrical side of welding machines and various other shop related equipment (press, sheers, drills, lathes etc). basically, Im a shop supervisor. Like, when looking for a job, I dont look for a welding position, rather a fabrication shop that needs a supervisor or plant manager or project manager or something like that.
I just got another raise (Im in tight with the owner, so as the company makes more money, I make more money...not like every 6 months after an eval i get a buck or two) so im up to $33.75 an hour, I think...I know its least $33. Once I hit $35, we agreed that Im gunna stay there for least a year. I got alot of raises in 04 and 05, company grew quick.
As for the trade, it all depends on where u live and what company your with. If your with an auto company, stay there. I'd love to get into Chrysaler or ford or gm...I would initially take a reduction in wages, but over 10 years, I'd make so much more money + benefits and job security.
I mean, I know guys who work at the canadian dodge plant in Brampton (20 mins from Toronto) and this one dude sits on the line, makes four tac welds (mig) on a certain part of the car frame, every 30 seconds or so and makes $31 an hour. He's been there 2 fuckin years...! started at like $29 or something.
Even worse, when i was younger, like 22 and shit, i was makin around $17-$20 an hour, depending on the company i was workin for. Thats decent enough still. I had one buddy tho, who got into dodge because of his mom. All he did was tightin 3 fuckin bolts with an air drill, on the line, and he was making $27.50 an hour...I so wish I could get into a car company.

Now all aluminum HDR bodies. 3/64th wire using a cobra welder, argon gas. .125 to 1.in medal thickness.
You guys, if you weld stainless, make sure you wear a air filter, OK.

Cobra eh? not bad
I like Hobarts, even tho I think they stopped production on those. Got one at my shop that i keep maintained, awesome machine.
so your doin tig? if your using straight argon and all and I assume u mean 3/64th filler rod? fuck...thats thin dude, for frames, of any machine if your tiggin u should atleast use 6/32 and a min 1/16th tungsten.
or are u just fusing and not using filler rod?
Yeah, I wear the dual chambered mask when im workin in the shop...lots of small products - benches, garbage cans, staircase railings etc stainless and aluminum mostly, we use tig on the railings and shit.
During the summer tho, I do joists and other structural shit...lots of stick and mig, although the trend seems to be going toward flux as of late...i dunno why, ugly welds, too much spatter, nasty amount of smoke.
When it comes to mig/flux, I like bronze .035 eagle wire, burns nice, barely any spatter (if u can weld properly).

Older ones are the best. The company is switching over to miller welders lately.

oh, mig and flux auto feed...i gotcha now. I thought it was an arc, tig and mig all in one. I go for the heavy duty 600V all in one's when im buying new machines for the shop.
Your doin aluminum frames with mig eh? thats some seriously dirty work, I hate the smoke that comes off aluminum
$25 american an hour for aluminum mig? damn man, ur one lucky guy, not to many ppl makin $25 (bout $30 cdn right) an hour just as a wire burner.
@mack
I guess I'd be about $25-$28 USD...u know where the cash is right now? in north america mind u. British Columbia and New orleans. Just burning wire in BC will get u like $22-$25 Cdn an hour, where as in Ontario, your looking $12-$18, depending on your tickets.
And new orleans...fuck, gold mine for the trade industry. Alot of structural stick work and underwater arc going on and underwater welding is fuckin cash, basically $2000 a dive/day. Dangerous, but still. I so wish I had my underwater tickets. Im going for my plastic welding ticket soon (I cant remember the acronym for it, medical/space level shit, gunna be interesting).

Wait wait
Im not following this.
How does it work in the UK? the education levels or whatever u call it
in North America (i think its the same in the US, generally, in terms of grades and shit) its like this
Elemtary School (Primary School) - can either be junior kindergarden to grade 8 or jk-grade 5
Middle School - grades 5 - 8 (usually public schools, catholic schools have the jk-grade 8 deal)
Highschool - grades 9 - 12 (back in my day we had a grade 13 called OAC)
Then college or University.
