So Much Win

Everything after New Vegas is crap. IMO.

OK, the South Park game was good but it was ... South Park, let's exclude that.

- KOTOR2 was a half broken, half finished mess

- NWN2 was their best game if you ask me

- Alpha Protocol ... clearly not as polished and finished as originally intended

- FONV: many find it the best Fallout. To me, even FO4 is even better since I don't like their world design which is utter crap. I don't care about roleplay ability when the world can't even convince me. Also, its locations are crap compared to FO3 & 4. The strip was a quarter the original intended size which showed.

- DS3: suffered from being console focused - shitty controls

- South Park: pretty good game

- PoE: again, pretty good game though it's not perfect

- Armored Warfare I never played - I went for World of Tanks instead

- A mediocre game

- Tyranny: a great RPG from what I played

- Poe 2: again pretty good

So I don't really buy the "they're making shit games lately" line. Their earlier games were half broken, unpolished messes and I didn't really like their style. Basically, they put all their focus on dialogue and story but neglected world building & immersion. Their early games were not convincing as worlds to live in.

An you think PoE and Tyranny were convincing worlds ? Give me a break, just because you add a shit ton of filler text it doesn't make it a developed world.

PoE has the most boring, uninspired world I've ever encountered in any RPG ever made. Flat writing, text for the sake of text with made up words to make it seem well thought out. Uninspired characters and basically nonexistent plot and/or pacing.

KotOR 2 - half broken/half finished mess as you say and yet, is to this day one of the best role playing games ever made and that says a lot about all the garbage that is being thrown out these days.

NWN 2 - I'll agree its probably their best game

Alpha Protocol - What are you even talking about ? it was far more broken then KotOR 2, yet you're being so nice to it.

Fallout NV - is the best fallout game, period. The only ones you can even argue are the first 2. The fact you think the broken, nonsensical mess that was Fallout 4 had better world building tells me all I need to know about your taste, or more to the point how much attention you actually put in to the games you play. Of everything that was wrong with Fallout 4, the world building was by far the most egregious. Also good locations in F4 and 3? Are you kidding ?

DS3 - the problem weren't the controls, it was the fact it was called Dungeon Siege, but played nothing like a DS game.

South Park was a shit game with some fun writing, Obsidian had little to do with that.

PoE - worst "old-school" like RPG I've ever played, already mentioned some of what was wrong with it.

Tyranny - great ideas, terrible execution.

PoE 2 - gave it 1 hour before I said fuck it. Not going to comment more on that, it had the same issues PoE had from what I've seen of it and what I read other people say have only made it look even worse to me.

I really shouldn't be having optimistic thoughts, but the idea of Cain and Boyarsky doing their own cozy alternative FallArcanum-out-esque game in space supported by a decent budget (Take Two's) makes me go giggity Me Gusta
This could be our best bet for experiencing that pleasant tingling again, all the more so since Bethesda have completely lost their goddamn mind (not that they'd be able to pull it off with their writing team/designers anyway).

We also know that Obsidian have been hiring folks with experience in UE4, a first-person perspective/action-exploration-based approach are more likely at this point (difficult to see T2 going for the isometric formula). Let's hope for the best..and please don't betray us Mad

Probably the original FO1-2. He said, "this game has a lot of me in it. It's got a very lot of Fallout in Arcanum style and humour."

Hopefully something good. Very Happy

The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.

Yeah I would assume that would the case (although more FO1 since Cain/Boyarsky/Anderson left at the start of FO2's development), but presumably they also want to shoot for broader, modern appeal.

Yeah, I'm sure an Xbox game revealed at The Game Awards will be a lot like Fallout 1/2.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/578650/The_Outer_Worlds/
RELEASE DATE: 2019
Quote:
The Outer Worlds is a new single-player first-person sci-fi RPG from Obsidian Entertainment and Private Division.

In The Outer Worlds, you awake from hibernation on a colonist ship that was lost in transit to Halcyon, the furthest colony from Earth located at the edge of the galaxy, only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy it. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter various factions, all vying for power, the character you decide to become will determine how this player-driven story unfolds. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable.

Key Features
  • The player-driven story RPG: In keeping with the Obsidian tradition, how you approach The Outer Worlds is up to you. Your choices affect not only the way the story develops; but your character build, companion stories, and end game scenarios.
  • You can be flawed, in a good way: New to The Outer Worlds is the idea of flaws. A compelling hero is made by the flaws they carry with them. While playing The Outer Worlds, the game tracks your experience to find what you aren't particularly good at. Keep getting attacked by Raptidons? Taking the Raptiphobia flaw gives you a debuff when confronting the vicious creatures, but rewards you with an additional character perk immediately. This optional approach to the game helps you build the character you want while exploring Halcyon.
  • Lead your companions: During your journey through the furthest colony, you will meet a host of characters who will want to join your crew. Armed with unique abilities, these companions all have their own missions, motivations, and ideals. It's up to you to help them achieve their goals, or turn them to your own ends.
  • Explore the corporate colony: Halcyon is a colony at the edge of the galaxy owned and operated by a corporate board. They control everything... except for the alien monsters left behind when the terraforming of the colony’s two planets didn’t exactly go according to plan. Find your ship, build your crew, and explore the settlements, space stations, and other intriguing locations throughout Halcyon.

The visual style of the game reminds me of Wildstar, but I don't mind it. I wonder if Obsidian/Tim Cain hired some of their staff after they announced they were shutting down. Glad to see a return to more dialogue and choice-focused gameplay as far as this game is concerned.

It's probably good for them to go for a more colorful and cartoony look since the graphics won't be the strenght of the game. The facial animations actually remind me of New Vegas npcs a bit.

Very dangerous thing to say. I love Fallout mainly because it has a unique approach to the genre (doesn't take itself too seriously), its setting and lore and its atmosphere. Oh, and the mods.

Besides New Vegas (and partially FO4 until I modded it), I loved the atmosphere in all Fallout games - gloomy, depressing, a decaying world full of history to uncover and no game I know has managed to even come close to emulating this.
