Apparently they are sitting on top of 1080ies that they dont want to sell cheap, so they are cutting them down to 1060ies with GDDR5X.
They want people to buy their 2070ies instead.
I still think partial Raytracing is an interesting tech thats in its babyshoes right now. Its just that Nvida beeing Nvidia has managed to be to greedy about it so that its irrelevant as long as its only available to the overpriced tier cards.
You're being much too kind to them. I mean, think about it:
The previous 10X0 generation saw massive price increases due to the dirty evil bit coin miners because Nvidia got caught with their pants down leading to shortages everywhere. Regular gamers were unable to buy a new card unless they paid 30 to 100% more for it.
Nvidia KNEW a lot of gamers (including me) were waiting for the new generation to replace their old cards with. So what do they do ... do they release a new card at a similar price point but with improved performance?
NO.
They release some prototype of a card far from ready for actual use at 20% more than the already-expensive 10X0 line with 5-10% performance improvements for regular games and 50-80% performance drops when using the card's ray tracing feature. On top of that, they quickly stopped production of the old cards which were far more attractive to buy.
Seriously, Nvidia knew this was the right time to take gamers hostage. Lots of gamers were hungry for the new generation so they forced this new tech down our throats. It's not ready yet? Tough luck. Either you keep your ancient GTX 980/970 or you replace it with a ridiculously overpriced card that has meh performance at best.
Solved. Same friend who set me up with brand new Z370-board, 16GB (4x4) HyperX RAM @ 3200 and i5 8400 is giving me his 1060 6GB since he's replacing it with something else (better). A 1060 6GB will last me quite nice @ 1080p I think.
So I've become acquainted with the card now and managed to push +225 on core and +625 on RAM (stable) and depending on game it sits on 2075-2126 MHz. I replaced the TIM 2 days ago (damn, the existing TIM was dry and hard) with some AC MX-4 since I had some stability issues. Then I figured out that I need to increase Core Voltage % to 50%. That sorted everything out for me. First GPU I've had with boost tech so it took some youtubing and reading to get to know how the card works.
I'm a happy camper. Now to get a 144hz 27" monitor.
Like I've always said - also in the monitor topic. 4K is ridiculous. 1440p is ideal - performance vs benefit it's the sweet spot. Sure, you can spot the difference if you pay attention on a still screen but in most games, you're not going to notice any difference.
My TV is 4K and most of the time I don't even know whether Amazon Prime is playing in 4K or HD so for TVs it's even more ridiculous.

I think the Gsync issue was fixed with a driver or bios update but the main issue seems to be the cards artifacting before dying.
Gamers Nexus did their own testing and ruled out that it was a bios and heat issue with their loaned RMA ready RTX 2080 Ti cards.
The artifacting suggests some type of RAM issue but nothing has been confirmed yet, and engineers in the industry say it might be a "board-level assembly" or "in-silicon" issue.

The chips could be fine though but the connector or how the GPU chips reads GDDR6 could have problems although I can only speculate and I doubt we'll know for sure unless NVIDIA outright says what the problem actually is.
EDIT: Then again it's not as finicky and sensitive as HBM and I wouldn't expect it to be that problematic (They did GDDR4 to 5 to 5x after all and so on.) so maybe a thing with the circuit board or PCB, micro cracks or whatever but just speculative for now until we have some actual info.
Software or the GPU itself even could be updated via drivers including micro code, actual hardware defects well that's going to be a large amount of dead 1080Ti founder edition cards in a few months if there is something critical with the assembly for the initial batch or more.
Man so sad watching so many dumb people comment on raytracing on reddit/YT and other ‘enthusiast’ forums, shitting on these cards not understanding jack shit of what this new tech can offer and why its extremely expensive computationally. Also how impressive it is to finally be running in real time even if only for limited parts of the scene ( reflections/gi/shadows/ao)
Guess their uniformed selves were expecting raytracing @4k60fps at 10-20% performance hit.
I get being annoyed at the lack of dlss games, rtx games but not the performance. Also comparing this to vaporware and shitty nvidia ‘physx’. Raytracing has existed since forever in rendering and is the goal for computer graphics full stop.

It's rushed tech and people should bitch on it. Its not worth the increase in price (in its current state) and drop in performance. Card itself (if it doesn't burn ) seems to be handling pretty well if you're into all that 4k goodness.
They should have focused more on that 4k shit than on the early RTX capabilities because they oversold it by miles.
In all honesty I really don't get (money money money ofc.) why they went with RTX marketing for the 2070 range, should have done it only with the 2080. At least those are the right cards for enthusiasts/early adopters.
Yup, the 2070 would have been excellent value and a real step up without RTX at 1080 performance level and lower price.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."
Ray tracing was pretty amazing years ago. Now, with how well oldstyle rasterized graphics advanced, it only looks like an upgrade from what we have and not a huge cgi upgrade.
I still think it looks fantastic but so far it's just quite pixelated reflections in few surfaces in bf5... that costs 100 fps. It's not even the whole ray traced scene because that would take minutes to render

Well, the first of my parts for new build arrived today
As a long time ASUS fanboy, that name does not even enter this build whatsoever, and I'll tell you why. They lied!, pure and simple. Their new 'top-end' boards only have 4 VRM phases, (albeit good ones) but advertised as much more, and that galls me, as it does, Intel's 9th Series, and Nvidia's 20 Series, all with lies, and marketing bullshit, way overpriced crap, and very little in return for the end user, apart from extra heat, very little performance gains, and needless system instability.
I'm also a 'watercooling' fanboy, and this does not enter this build either, as one, I can't be assed, and two, these AIO's have just gotten better, hence, I went for the latest Corsair job, which has been gathering some great reviews, but time will tell.
A strange build for me, which all goes against everything I stand for, but I will NOT pay stupid prices (regardless of whether I can afford them or not), for the God damn sake of it, more so, when there is very little reward, and nothing but utter shit in return.
The 8700K has been Pre-binned & delided, with a guarantee of 5.2GHz (with decent cooling), I'll expect 5 at a low vcore - all one needs for a gaming rig, that will do me.
Gigabyte boards have never been kind to me in the past, but this board is excelling in the reviews also, and is a work of art to look at in person, lol, it really is nice, so again, we will see.
RGB I got, so RGB it is, lol. Every fuckin part has RGB!! It will probably take me more time trying to turn everything one colour, than to build the system, and then get my keyboard to match, lmao!
It will also be louder, but, it is what it is.
I will also say, that I find it a disgrace, that the 'riser cable' does not come with the case , and has to be bought separately, and at a bloody steep cost, despite them advertising this feature, but there ya go.
Here is list of rest coming this week to complete the build.
