Tim Sweeny: Publishers (eg Microsoft) are toxic and destructive.

http://www.polygon.com/a/epic-4-0

Quote:
"When we released Gears of War: Judgment, a bunch of community players were complaining about all the multiplayer levels we created. We realized that, you know, there are some problems with this, we should rework it, create a bunch of new content and release multiplayer around a new game just like we did in the project that was the genesis of Unreal Tournament," Sweeney says. "We had all these plans to do this, and so we went to Microsoft and we said, ‘Hey, we want to do this.’ And they said ‘No, you don't want to do that.’

"We weren't asking them for money, but you know as our publisher and proprietor of Xbox, it didn't fit into their business plans and so they said no. That made me realize very clearly the risk of having a publisher or anybody standing between game developers and gamers — and how toxic and destructive that process could be to the health of a game and its community."

Yeah, too little and too late, chummer. You had your chance to realise how abysmal Microsoft are as a publisher back when you jumped into bed with them.

To play the devil's advocate Sweeny's idea of addressing the complaints of GeoW:J players was to sell them a new game. Very Happy

So what you're saying is that Microsoft isn't as dastardly as Epic? Laughing

They have transformed themselves with Fortnite etc.

Same for Konami. People joked they were dead without Kojima, but they are making the most profit than ever before in their 49 years as a company by deciding to focus on mobile games and Pachinko.

I think the tonizito article has less to do with gaming but rather their other business endeavors. UE is now being used in a wide variety of applications wholly unrelated to games. Such as this. Epic now has a business division that is pursuing business for the engine away from games. With most big publishers pushing their own competing engines for several years now, it's a very smart move.

I never saw a decent person ever saying Epic games was "dying", especially how successful UEs were.. specially 3..

The mumblings that were against Epic games seems to originate from CliffB statements and their refusal to port GEOW sequals to the PC....

This is somewhat reminds me of Valva.. Steam success seems to distance their focus from HL series...

Among non-gaming things, the link mentions esports.

Fortnite is the world's biggest esport "by a long shot": https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidthier/2018/05/21/fortnites-massive-prize-pool-just-made-it-the-biggest-game-in-esports/#3bdde551063f

So it's been crucial to attracting investors.

For some reason, my brain simply cannot accept 'esport' and 'Fortnite' in the same sentence...it's just a gaming competition isn't it really.
