Their official stance is (3DRealms-style) "When it's done" and we all know how that turned out.

They revealed it way too early. That "personal responsibility" trailer was released way way back in 2013.

I think those idiots at 3d realms were panicking and kept trying to hang with the times, and that abomination in combination with gearbox was the result.

They admitted that it was only revealed at that time to pitch investors.

I also read that it was done to attract new talent to the studio. Many other studios also hire new talent or have to pitch to investors but don't release a public trailer for it.

They don't need to reveal to pitch or attract. All they have to say is, "we made The Witcher series" and investors should throw money at them.

As Toni said - it was 2 years before W3 appeared, and the two previous games weren't as successful as the last one. So it was a case of a still fairly unknown studio with only 2 games. Other studios might have other means, be more recognizable thanks to certain individuals working there etc.

They were burning through the money from previous games and parent company's distribution efforts, so they decided to show something - that they are not afraid of changing the settings entirely. And I'm sure most of the money they got then was pumped into W3.

I would bet 2019. They even said that all game content it ready.
They need to just make it all work on xbox 360, nintendo64 and upcoming playstation classic

How can you be late with a game that had no release date or even hinted at one?

Fall 2019 is the obvious launch window to take advantage of E3 and Gamescom. Pushing it to Spring 2020 would be a bit silly given how "early" they've shown a pretty robust game slice and that the game is "playable" from start to finish.

And that's why the real release date will be 2021 Troll Dad

That said, I wouldn't mind as long as the end product delivers quality.
