Posted: Thu, 19th Jul 2018 14:02 Post subject: List of good HDR movies |
|
 |
I recently bought a 65 inch LG E8, and the picture quality and the HDR quality specifically blows my mind. HDR is hard to describe, but for me this is finally a jump in visual fidelity, that is really worth it. Never cared for the 3d gimmick, as it ruined the picture, never cared for 4k, as that is only a nice to have for me. But HDR is mind blowingly good - if the content is good.
Good HDR does not make a movie good, obviously, and I'd like to start a list purely on the basis of visual fidelity in regards to HDR.
My recommendations:
Ready player one - the Oasis parts have clearly the best HDR I have seen in a movie.
Blade Runner 2049 - makes it pop nicely, but not overdone at all
Tomb Raider
Disappointment: The last Jedi - HDR is underutilized.

I would check majority of netflix shows that are hdr.
Marco polo being one good example of how hdr should be done, as stated by a colorist I know.
In the end it's about personal tastes.
And its strange but hdr isnt uniform on all TVs.
It's still a baby. Pretty much its blacks down, whites up, contrast.
In 2 years we should have a teenager at our hands with plenty of glorious properly done hdr. I'm not even sure if they got the specs down right yet. But by 2020 Olympics they should be. As the broadcasts will be hdr, 4k.

Sicario makes very good use of HDR (in addition to being one of the prettiest 4K films so far).
Alien: Covenant makes good use also, despite 2K DI.
Interstellar and Dunkirk are beautiful in the 70mm scenes. The 35mm film footage makes much less use of HDR.
Blue Planet 2 and Planet Earth 2 are great. PE2 has several low quality shots which are really jarring, but those are by far small amount.
Altered Carbon on Netflix makes great use of HDR.

Not surprising that TLJ HDR was as disappointing as the film itself.
1 and 2 are still amazing.

Not that strange, if you know that the HDR standards currently target either something like a 1000 nits, which almost no TVs meet, or 4000 nits, which no TV can produce. Hence, manufactures have to decide how to deal with this discrepancy and everyone does their own thing, as there is no standard for that. And why would there be? That would just be silly
Local Dimming LCDs behaved differently with SDR, now with even more contrast they cannot natively support, those differences will probably be magnified as well. The top LCD contender crushes dark detail in HDR for example, says hdtvtest.
And we have only just now gotten super close to true reference grade SDR displays for consumers with Panasonic's OLEDs.

TVs make a huge difference, and anything good costs a fortune. I thought for 2 months before I committed to buying mine. But the viewing pleasure is simply amazing.

If you want to safe a buck stop at the LG C8, as the models further up only differ in cosmetics or sound (which still wont be good). In fact, recently I saw the first test of the B8 and that did not reveal a difference either.
Similarly with Panasonic, the cheaper FZW802 or whatever its regional name is, is enough. The more expensive model has a sound bar and in some regions a better remote or something.

B8 has an inferior processor, so dynamic tone mapping suffers.

C8 is basically the same as E8, but E8 looks better - I got it at a major discount though, cheaper than C8.
Sound on all of these are utter shit though, totally not worthy of a TV.

Well if you're buying a 65 inch tv... you kinda need a decent audio system as well.

Which comparable tv has a much better sound? The sound quality on the c8 and e8 is very good for a tv imo.

I guess, if price is the same, go with what you like more. But if price is more expensive on the E8, there is absolutely no reason to with the E8.

I'm not sold on OLED yet personally.
I love my KD65XE9005 - the HDR is incredibles. The only issue is the shitty Sony-Android OS. It's not the slowness but the lack of support.
Still, who needs smart shit on a TV?

Do you have a source for that? Just out of curiousity

Goddess on Netflix also makes a good use of HDR.
