Lol just a typo... Well, typos are pretty common thing as programmer, especially on such huge and complex projects like games, what surprises me is that noone noticed this typo until now

This is why you should use strongly typed enums and not strings. You could expect this kind of shit from web developers with 6 months of experience, not from video game programmers Sad

I never actually played this, as I didn't want to suffer a mental breakdown. Would this one error really 'fix' the whole game? Has anyone actually tried it?

It's a rather annoying game. But if you want an Aliens game desperately then maybe try it. Just don't rage too much, if it's annoying uninstall it. And of couse don't pay money for it.

here is for PCGamer guy says:

Quote:
In my experience, they're not only considerably more aggressive, they're also much better at tracking the player. As an experiment, I tried just running away from one, a maneuver which would normally confound a xenomorph, and it stayed right on my tail.

The change is less noticeable in some situations, and it's tough to say just from playing how much of the xenomorphs' clumsiness was caused by this typo, but they certainly seem to move more efficiently once it's corrected. They waste less time getting to the player, crawl and lunge more often, and generally move in more of a beeline rather than their usual drunken stroll. I mean, they're still plenty dopey, but hey, what did you expect?

Quote:
Inside your games config file (My Document\My Games\Aliens Colonial Marines\PecanGame\Config\PecanEngine.ini) is the following line of code :

ClassRemapping=PecanGame.PecanSeqAct_AttachXenoToTether -> PecanGame.PecanSeqAct_AttachPawnToTeather

Im sure you'll notice the spelling mistake

ClassRemapping=PecanGame.PecanSeqAct_AttachXenoToTether -> PecanGame.PecanSeqAct_AttachPawnToTether

If you fix it to look like the above and then play the game, the difference is pretty crazy!

Why is this line important? There are two reasons :
1) AttachXenoToTeather doesn't do anything. Its basically empty or stripped
2) AttachPawnToTether does ALOT. It controls tactical position adjustment, patrolling and target zoning

When a Xeno is spawned, it is attached to a zone tether. This zone tells the Xeno what area is its fighting space and where different exits are. In Combat, a Xeno will be forced to switch to a new tether (such as one behind you) so as to flank, or disperse so they aren't so grouped up etc. (*disclaimer* this is inferred opinion, I cant see the actual code only bits)

Whenever the game tried to do this, nothing happened. Now it does!

Aww Yeah

Yup.

This 2017 post came shortly after the release of the group's final "Game Over, Man!" patch, which, among many other fixes, overwrites this INI file with the typo's correction. Turns out, as of press time, the patch is still useful. Gearbox has not updated the game's PC version since July 2013, and the typo is still there.

On Friday, Ars re-downloaded and tested the game, exactly as served by Steam, through the opening beats of two missions. Then, we replayed those missions after editing the "teather" typo in the aforementioned INI file. In both missions, xenomorph AI improved dramatically once the typo was corrected, with monsters immediately taking advantage of elevated attack positions, hiding points, and multi-monster flanks. The difference is night-and-day.

The AI was stupidly aggressive in my case, so no thanks, I don't want to make it even more.

consolitis wrote:
That's the opposite of my experience. I kept dying because random Xenos were spawning and attacking me the very last second.

If he managed to make the game easier or rather more fair, good. Even more difficult? Fuck no.

From a couple of pages ago (third post is mine):

VGAdeadcafe wrote:
Holy shit I'm playing this in Hardened and I can't even go past that point in the hangar where you protect the guy hacking the door, I just get swarmed and instakilled, I died 10 times in a row Laughing

The other guys are a little useless and the reloading gets me killed.

I've never failed so badly in a FPS game. HALP !

DarkRohirrim wrote:
If you want to play this play it on normal or even easy. It's really hard, but not in a good way. The checkpoints are also pretty unforgiving. I did actually finish this entirely and I liked it. I still think it's not a very good game, but it's nowhere near as bad as some people make it seem, not in the current state anyway. They did improve it quite a lot, but I guess there was a limit to how much they could go with that as well. Also, the DLC was pretty much just better. The thing I find the worst in this game is just how frustrating it is at times.

consolitis wrote:
Don't worry, I have no problem playing FPS games on normal and in this one I kept dying again and again and again and again until I dropped the difficulty to easy.

Extremely unfair difficulty.
I shit-deleted it later anyway.

VGAdeadcafe wrote:
I think they upped the difficulty after some patch, I'm playing the 1.4.0 Limited edition by Prophet.

I think they got rid of the retardedness of the aliens. But now it's kinda unbalanced, it seems I have to cheese my way through this encounter somehow, or get lucky with the grenades. The aliens move in fast and they're many.

Haha! The game was one of our biggest gaming disappointments but at least we got some entertainment out of it, just..not the type of entertainment that we were hoping for Laughing
Now we'd need another spelling mistake that adds a level design that isn't insulting, one that takes care of the pea shooting, one for the embarrassing "atmosphere" and "story", and the final one that automatically shift-deletes the game after 15 minutes Cool Face

Reminds me of when i tried to get more than 2 grass types / per ground texture to show up in Skyrim for my mod.. you have to spell texture wrong (texure) in the .ini to get it to work (iMaxGrassTypesPerTexure).. really took ages to figure that one out since it's supposed to NOT be spelled correctly.

So it seems they released the game with this bug, then everyone was complaining about how retarded the aliens were, then to compensate for that criticism in the following patches they made the aliens unfairly hard, they just swipe you faster than a fat bitch on Tinder, look at this thread from the time
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/937325-aliens-colonial-marines/65869641

They made several AI improvements but the net sum of that is that they made the game unbalanced and irritatingly hard ... while missing the fucking typo!!!

So they did the balancing and the attempted rebalancing using the buggy code

...how hard would it be to implement something that says ERROR! Command X is not recognizable! (or whatever) in a console window to prevent devs from stupid mistakes like this.. I'm following another game (alpha) currently and i see changelog fixes like "oops.. i had misspelled the code so it wasn't working". Rolling Eyes

I know that many games has this and i highly doubt it can be something immensely difficult to do + it would overall save a lot of time.
