I played it for about 7 hours and it's pretty good so far. It does get a bit grindy since the areas past the first boss are increasingly harder, but this is a rogue-like with persistent progression so that was to be expected.
I also wrote this, maybe you'll find it helpful:

This game is pretty good but it desperately needs bonefires.

The Elemental Update:

- New mechanics related to elemental damage, particularly fire mean that you will now be burning enemies to death in a sort of grisly pyre of pixel art.

- Oil based items now actually do what they're supposed to and there are new weapons that go hand in hand with them... Got the urge to burn something? Yes, we mean in the game!

- New Items and affixes: New weapons, skills and passives attributes! Including many triggering elemental effects, oil grenades, electricity conducting water and more... We can’t wait to nerf it all for you!

- New Monsters & NPCs

- Shield rework: Shields now allow for a more defensive playstyle. Your character is no longer locked after a successful parry and all shields provide a short force field when you take damage. Cherry on the cake, you can finally send back those annoying red bombs to their owners!

- Skills rework: Turrets, meat grinders and most of the others deployable traps now require you to be around them in order to function correctly. This is to bring the cheese level down a little bit

It's always nice when games in your backlog get more ripe over time - in the form of more content.
Just like a good whine.

Here is a TLDR; version of the roadmap to make sure we're all on the same page. We’ll also mention some events we wish to attend, so you can come insult us or buy us a beer, or even both, depending on where you side on the whole "Dead Cells coming to console" deal.

  • February: Opening the Alpha branch (and then the Beta branch in the course of the month) to the player willing to test the 6th Update.
  • March: Release of the 6th Update. Team breaks up into tactical assault teams. Some take the plane for San Francisco where we will be attending the GDC.
  • Mid/Late April: Release of the first mini update. We will be in Boston for the Pax East and London for the Rezzed expo.
  • May/June: Linux and Mac builds available.
  • Q3/Q4 2018: Release out of Early Access.
  • 2 to 4 months after the release: Content heavy Free DLC
  • Beyond: No idea, but if you got some, put it in the comments!

That would be lovely! Would make it so much more interesting, but I think they'd have to resize and redo all the levels.

Can't wait for this one. Decided a lil bit ago I'm not going to play or pay for anymore EA games, but with the 33% discount now on steam I might have to pick this up Very Happy

How would coop make it more interesting? Coop would just force the developers to extra work to remake levels and re-balance progression, difficulty and other features to be suitable for coop.

Yes, that's why it's unrealistic. But I don't think I'd have to explain why it'd be interesting to explore coop, perhaps in the sequel.

I think coop and metroidvania won't work well together and the former will only dilute the latter. Is that really worth it?

Is there any game that does it successfully?

No need to remake anything if it's only 2-3 players co-op. It could be done the same way Diablo does it.

Making levels a bit bigger depending on a number of players won't be a problem either considering it's procedurally generated to a certain extent.

As someone who has played Dead Cells since the beginning of Early Access, I don't see coop working with it. The gameplay mechanics, enemies, pacing, etc. are all designed for a singleplayer experience.

August release date
After (almost) one year in Early Access, we seem to finally be heading toward a proper release. We've run the numbers several times and apparently we should be out by August* (unless the office burns down, half the team falls sick with ebola or zombies happen (in which case you might find us running with the zombie crowd looking for a tasty tartare of brain).

very nice game.
Just need some luck to get some of the good lootses.

On my second run I got all the way to the area before last boss. I just got bear trap and a ... turrent (level IV both) and then the 2 'golden' weapons from the bosses before. (I had a... umm. broadsword with 3k DPS and a bow with ~2k dps)

In the last area I failed at a mini boss which poisons you, I didn't realize that the poison was draining life so fast.

I don't have time to restart the game over and over even if I get to keep blueprints and other stuff, so I'm gonna get out of every run as much as possible Laughing
