New update out.
This updates adds the final part of the game (behind the door that can be opened with the key card) and an ending.

Hey everyone,
For this patch we focused on opening up the door at the bottom of the sinkhole cave. The door is locked and you’ll need to find the keycard in order to get inside.
Additionally, some new story items have been placed around the world, particularly in locations where you can find red paint.
Our plan was to originally have the door be openable only once the game was fully complete however the feedback and help we’ve gotten from the community has been invaluable throughout the development of the game and so we wanted to have everyone involved in this part of the process also. Keep in mind, you should expect some bugs and possibly other issues, and may prefer to wait for a final release to play this part of the game.
Note: You can’t currently save in areas past the door.
As always, please continue to post your bug reports and feedback in the Discussions area of the Community Hub

Is there an approximate official release date yet? And is it "full" game now when it has ending? I want to play it but hate early access and just want a finished game.
Yeah it's a bit over 2 years now since it was released on early-access and now it has hit v0.5 so halfway there.
Well hopefully it won't take them too long to get the game prepped for release now that the story is finalized though perhaps I'm being too optimistic.
We wanted to share our plans for moving The Forest out of early access and into a full v1.0 release. We’re aiming for a release date towards the end of April. We’ll have an exact date when we are a bit closer. On release of v1.0 the price will increase from $14.99 USD to $19.99 USD
Today The Forest moves from early access into a full release. It’s been a crazy ride, made possible only by the players who have supported us for the last four years. To the team here it feels like a game we all made together, us and the community. Your input suggestions and feedback has been invaluable to us.
This version of the game adds a bunch of new stuff, from a craftable warmsuit, significant re-work of the endgame and a new alternate ending. Along with this there is a ton of cave re-work and polish and many many improvements and fixes.
There is a lot we still want to do, and plan on heavily supporting the game moving forward. Some other big items we hope to implement soon are proper cheat controls in multiplayer and fixes to the issues that will likely come up in this release.
Today we are also announcing our first major update to the game. The VR version of The Forest will release for free to all players of the game, on May 22. It’s the full game, with your hud on a smart watch, a full 3d inventory, and tree cutting using motion controls. We think it’s the most fun vr game we’ve ever played and can’t wait to share it with everyone.
We know there are a couple reports of crashing and keyboard related issues that came up in the last 2 days and will aim to get fixes for those as soon as we can.
If you are running a dedicated server, you will need to restart your server with the latest version to be compatible with this patch release.
How many years was this one in Early Access? They cheated and changed to "release" date to April 30th today.
Edit - Apparently since May-ish 2014. So they milked the cow for close to half a decade! Bravo!
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

I've been following the game for years. The dev team delivered a patch every month and actually improved the game and also added a lot of content.
This was not one of those dead early access games so i don't see what the problem is?

This was worked on constantly, to me this was one of the few good EA stories we got out of Steam.
Usually you see: 1 year in EA, still riddled with bugs and lack of content but pushed out for release because the well dried out.
Yep you can blame the Devs for anything but supporting the game for such a long time
Difference of viewpoint I suppose.
I see it as - Everything they do from now on-wards counts as "supporting the game". Everything up until this point has simply been taking money for a product that was yet to be complete (aka they had an obligation to finish it), so no brownie points there.
And yes, one could argue that versioning is arbitrary etc. etc. , but I just don't see it that way. Early Access has been so far warped and exploited for so many years that I just can't go with that line of thinking and sleep soundly at night.

TIL not liking the EA model in general results in the Developers of The Forest being greedy assholes
Hey, nobody forced them to utilize that shady business model. They chose that route of their own accord, and hence will be judged accordingly.
You only get one chance to make a first impression - gaming is no exception - no matter what label (Alpha, Beta, Early Access) you put on your product.

Didn't see you bringing that up on other games yet you're here after the game went 1.0, complaining about EA, on a title that probably did it best. I can't shake my head hard enough for this one. But enjoy whatever kind of argument you wanted to discuss, just not with me

If that's your way of thinking you're missing out, but that's something you have to deal with yourself.
I heard that the early access yarr version was playable online, what about the codex release? I would like to try this out with my buddy before buying.

You can just install the CODEX release and not apply the crack, then use SmartSteamEmu, it has networking capability that apparently works with The Forest. For me at least the overlay that's required for that tho is very crash-prone, ymmv.

A lack of finances probably DID force them to utilize this business model. However, the buyers are the ones who aren't forced to do anything. They take the risk when buying such games.
Don't get me wrong: when a dev goes into EA and promises heaven & earth and then suddenly goes "well, it's not out of EA, version 1.0, done!" when half the promised features are missing ... THEN you can bitch all you want. Transparency is the issue here. Many EA developers don't really detail their plans up front and buyers kind of assume they'll get this and this and this along the way. I've seen this happen with quite a few EA games where the end result was a LOT less fleshed out than the people bought it expected it to be.
This business model invites such things, though. Devs keep working until sales dry up and then make the best of it. The scummiest devs drop the game completely once they see it won't be lucrative. At least you got to support the devs who try hard - it's often the fault of the media as well, in lack of coverage. Take the last Introversion Software game - Prison Architect got them tons of money yet they lost most of the profits on a game apparently no-one even heard of (Scanner Sombre). I only heard about it the moment I received it for free as part of a bundle and I didn't eve know it was an Introversion game.
I was in the mood for some forever alone Beargryllsing so I thought it was fitting to finish the ordeal in the woods inhabited by naked screaming men, it was pretty solid as far as the genre goes.
The atmosphere has a damn great eerie aftertaste, there is no handholding whatsoever (always good ) and the story unfolds in a very subtle manner with only a generic list of objectives to complete: it's up to the player to find the pieces scattered everywhere, visit all the creepy caves, face them anemic beasts, run like Forrest and try to reconstruct the events (they're obscure, though don't worry too much as things get clearer in the endgame phase..sort of).
The current 1.0 (or "1.0" ) version feels definitely more polished and full-fledged than when I first tried the game ages ago, the crafting 'n building system with traps, the stamina-based combat (mainly melee focused, with also ranged alternatives + explosives) and sense of exploration are all nicely done, even though there is still a lot of room for improvements in terms of depth and customization when it comes to the survival elements.
The game can feel glitchy at times, there are odd things happening every now and then such as birds creepily getting stuck in loops, logs defying the laws of physics and the terrifying dynamic AI going completely bonkers, though that isn't necessarily a bad thing here especially when monsters do their angry psycho runs and end up wrestling each other in hilarious ways
The visuals are pleasant, not too impressive in terms of details/variety but they do their job and the Unityesque performance is surprisingly good (>60fps all maxed out/TAA/1080p even for me). I'd say it's a recommended experience overall, it never feels as rewarding or satisfying as Subnautica (the undisputed king in my opinion ), but it has a different vibe a la Cannibal Holocaust, with tension involved (in single-player at least) and a refreshingly horrorish focus. Seven severed human heads and a big chunk of deformed mutant baby's meat/10
That feel when you wake up in the middle of the night and everyone is already waiting to collect your ribs and eat them for breakfast
