That kind of cancer is spreading like a byatch though..

Acting and shit is top-notch but for some unknown reason they can't make it scary. When the guy goes underwater it can be easily shot so creepily that everyone would shit their pants. But it's not.
The surrounding nature itself should be a monster. Instead it's some harmless and even beautiful combination of CG backs and plastic ice.
I also get a strong American Gods vibe - amazing cast and photography but not even close to something the book was.

i think this show is just too overhyped, it certainly does have many great things but also some mediocre ones. still a good series just not THAT good as people want it to be, but they nailed the horror parts, slow building tension but effective combined with the beautiful isolated landscape makes it even more creepy
Fuck, this was a great show. I just finished binge-watching ep. 6-10 after some "smoke".
I esp. like that it was basically a one season long "mini"-series instead of a long perpetual multi-season show which dragged on and stretched the story to boredom with unnecessary drama, flawed story arcs etc. and never finished (except for hastily written and executed finales after the show was cancelled).

Unless you're an Inuit living according to the old ways (I guess there are few of those these days).

So it's one season only?

that's exactly where they failed
they failed at some of the things you liked like some character development, some actors were meh, but the horror parts, the fact that its based on a true story and the arctic surroundings are the best things in this show.

It's one of the best historical fiction ever, true. But in the book Simmons managed to give the creeps fro the surrounding nature, the show doesn't. Too clean, too synthetic, too CG.

havent read the book so from a new person perspective i think they did good when compared to other movies. i dont know how more horror can they do it without going full gore which this is not horror anymore, maybe you could spoil some things for us to compare
i still have two episodes left to watch but so far its a solid 8/10 just because some of the non interesting characters that dragged a little in the middle through the end but if they removed like 2 episodes it could have been like a 9 or even 10
couse every adaptation needs to be 1:1 copy couse it always translates good , dont know if youre that stupid and in denial like some majority on this forum or just trolling, you clearly dont know what youre talking about
this is the last thing ill say on the subject, clearly it dosent go anywhere
Rarely does an adaptation remain faithful.
Look at game of thrones.
Look at marvel movies.
Look at IT.
Look at lotr.
Look at all adaptations.
Only a few remain faithful.
Reading the source helps you explore the lore. If the adaptation does a poor job at it.
But it isn't necessary to read the source material mainly cause during the adaptation process things change and the source material becomes relevant in title/characters and basic plot. Things change, things are added, things are removed. Things are modified for the general audience.
If you want to compare source material to the adaptation then you can read it.
But it's only necessary if you want to tell all your friends who haven't read the source, who are enjoying the adaptation that they're wrong and are missing key irrelevant parts from the source material that don't matter in the adaptation. Or the plot of the adaptation.

What a beautiful example of how things get dumbed down around us in general...
Anyway - reading the source material is about experiencing the story, the relationships, love, friendship, humor in a way the author intended it to be experienced. Every word matters. Every word matters, every adjective, every desciption. That's what makes a book unique. Not just the events, not the story, not the twists. But the 'taste' of material, the atmosphere.
An adaption - as faithful and talented as it may be in terms of story, characters and twists- will never EVER translate all that 1:1. It doesn't at all mean it will be bad. But it will be a different product which cannot be used to fully enjoy the original author's concept.
This is exactly why I'm saying that insisting that you don't need to read the original book is beyond stupid. And protecting those who boast about it is perhaps good for forum reputation of a public defender but the position is still pathetic in terms of culture and intellectuality.
here's a nice adaptation for your entertainment

Just binge watched the last 5 episodes and loved it. Relentlessly grim but completely engrossing throughout.
Spoiler:
Hickey's death is more of a crowdpleaser than in the books, but a deserved one, I felt.
Loved Crozier's ending, too, especially the final shot.
Spoiler:
what was that last shot anyway, did he froze? dont know what i feel about the ending, he decided not to reveal himself couse he was ashamed of what happened?
still a 8/10, maybe if it was on hbo and had 1h episodes with better secondary actors it could have been much better but the second half of the show dragged because of them, the first half is excelent

Spoiler:
He was hunting for seal. The child lying beside him was the same one that had run away when he first entered the camp, so it showed that he had become integrated with the tribe and had left his past behind.
I liked that they found a way to let him survive in a way that could still tally with the established facts about the crews' fate.
ill give it a 6.5 , the last two eps where just junk, felt rushed and seriously lacking. They should have only done 7 eps. and cut this stupid beast out, that thing was just a complete waste of time. without beast and more hunger and insanity terror this could have been a solid 9
Great acting and cinematography, but I think it was a mistake to add supernatural elements (that ridiculous "bear"). They should have just focused on inner demons released under extreme pressure and men turning into "beasts" to survive.
