|

Blade Runner-ish at least in setting.
Co-written & directed by Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code, Warcraft).
Quote: | “It’s a thriller with a very weird tone,” he tells us. "It goes very dark, then it also goes very darkly funny. It’s science-fiction urban, so it certainly owes some of its influence to Blade Runner.”
Intriguingly, Jones describes the setting as “the Casablanca of the future”.
"Paul Schrader’s Hardcore meets Robert Altman’s MASH” is how he’s defining the film.
Mute is a film that will last. It is unlike any other science fiction being made today.” |

Cast:
Paul Rudd and Alexander Skarsgard
Plot:
Quote: | The film, which Jones wrote with Mike Johnson, is set in the Berlin of 40 years from now. Our story finds Skarsgard as Leo Beiler, a mute bartender plying his trade in a city where East meets West in a sort of sci-fi Casablanca. The love of his life – his one reason for sticking around – has vanished, and as he searches deeper into the city’s darker corners, he’ll discover that an unusual pair of American surgeons (one of them Rudd) are the biggest clue to the missing woman’s whereabouts; but our hero doesn’t know whether they’re his best hope or his worst nightmare. |
Last year Jones said Moon's Sam Rockwell was also expected to be involved in some capacity and Clint Mansell would provide the music. And the budget was said to be about ~$25M many years ago.
I don't know when it's filming but Empire have written it will release in 2017 so let's hope it indeed enters production.

Yep! Same
Hopefully Duncan Jones will unleash his creativity again here, let's pretend that Warcraft never happened xD (Although the direction itself was actually well-done there, it was all the rest that felt uninspired).

http://ew.com/movies/2017/01/06/alexander-skarsgard-duncan-jones-mute-first-look/
Quote: | Set in Berlin in 2052, Mute follows a bartender named Leo (Skarsgård) who lost the ability to speak after a childhood accident. After his beloved girlfriend Naadirah (played by Seyneb Saleh) unexpectedly disappears, he sets out on a noir-ish quest to find her, diving deep into the city’s seedy, neon underworld. (Jones has said before that his futuristic version of Berlin draws influence from both Blade Runner and Casablanca.)
The only recurring clue that Leo finds is a pair of wise-cracking American surgeons: Rudd, wearing a hell of a mustache, and Theroux, wearing a hell of a wig.
Jones co-wrote the script with Michael Robert Johnson (Sherlock Holmes), and he’s said in the past that Mute is somehow connected to his 2009 debut film Moon, which stars Sam Rockwell as a man working as a solitary miner on the Earth’s moon. |

I hope it's good. I had high expectations about Duncan after Moon.

Same. Moon was a sci-fi masterpiece, one of the best in its genre, I find.
I think I might be more excited about this than the new Blade Runner, as my hope in Ridley Scott is fading fast since I saw the latest Prometheus trailer.

Looks really bad, and I don't mean just visually. It's basically cliche after cliche.
Such a mystery that Netflix films are so underwhelming (if I am charitable) compared to their long-form series. They haven't found the formula yet.

I read that it was first written as a non scifi thriller but Jones kept adding new ideas to it and made a mess. It doesn't really feels like cyberpunk but something shot on the discarded BR 2049 sets.
I lost any kind of motivation to watch it. And it seems that Jones was one hit wonder. Shame...

Not necessarily. I was eagerly awaiting Annihilation, but the initial news that in Germany and most of the world it'd be released Netflix only, made me fear for the movie after having seen Cloverfield Paradox.
But the first reviews for Annihilation are in and they are really good. F.e. Angry Joe rated it with 9/10 ...

Annihilation is reviewing surprisingly well given the atrocious "C" polled audiences rated it according to CinemaScore. This is worse than Catwoman and Green Lantern!
Critics might have liked it but if the CinemaScore is anywhere near how it scored in the studio's test sceenings with the public, then they DID think they had made a STV type of film as far as audiences are concerned and wanted to get rid of it.

Yeah, I watched half of it today and seems like a nice little film actually, pedo shit aside.

Abysmal acting by some of the characters, abysmal dialogue. The movie doesn't seem to know what it wants to be with really weird inclusion of pedo and amish themes, among other things. Tries too hard to look futuristic, esp. with all the weird characters and some of the scenery (those fuckbots, wth?). Convenient "setup" of meeting all the right people and getting all the right clues to follow just the night before also seems as amateurish and lazy writing.
4/10 at best for me.
