And even if it's "fake", sure it can look good. I don't know about this specific transfer, but e.g. Blade Runner and Unforgiven have been said to look amazing in their latest 4K HDR iterations. |
Look at waldo's post, that is why. Why would they render the CGI at that time in anything but the target res? Thus they'll have to upscale, because in no way they have the 3D Data, textures, file formats and rendering software that they used exactly then to re-render everything in 4K. So they'll upscale, which looks like crap, and don't give me the "well this upscale looks fine". No it doesn't. The pixels get bigger, that's it. They can use some technique to try and hide the fact, but it's there. And to the point of HDR, Film might store more data than what they had digitally produced, but I don't know if they really went through the real film again and re-scanned it to be HDR friendly. Most likely it'll be some post shizzles where they just increase the range and do some "magic" to counter the banding I guess? .. The end result might look OK but it won't look any better than what you can already achieve by using post processing on the existing footage, except for the scenes where there is no CGI and they have the raw footage. A scene with no CGI in Starship Troopers though

The majority of today's films don't have 4K CGI either. They are upscaled from 2K but they look good. (Also the film has quite a bit of miniature work as well )
Regarding the film elements they are from a new 4K master.
Regarding HDR it's just a matter of putting some extra punch to the picture. It can look good even in old films.
As a matter of fact that's exactly what reviews of this title praise lol.

Quote: | Where this new 4K presentation really shines is in its color saturation and accuracy, and especially its contrast, all thanks to HDR. The darkest areas of the image are truly black, yet retain a nice bit of detail. The brightest areas are bright enough that your eye reacts – case in point, the scene when the Federation Fleet is being hammered by Bug plasma from the planet below – and yet again, still some nice detail visible amid the flames and flares. The brights are a little hot here and there, but this is more of a stylistic choice. Skin tones and other colors are bold and accurate in live action, while the expanded contrast really enhances the space-based footage. Visually, this is a strong presentation for this particular film. |
http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Starship-Troopers-4K-Blu-ray/179772/#Review
Quote: | The HDR enhanced color palette is a joy. Color depth is much stronger. Skin tones offer improved accuracy and depth. Orangey fireballs pop with significant punch in chapter 10, followed by splattering of green and orange bug blood moments later that reveal the true increase in saturation without betraying the movie's core appearance. |
In the end the new release is a significant upgrade over the previous blu-ray and the best the film has ever looked - be it because of HDR or not.

@consolitis: I already supposed it'll look good, but there is only so little that can be done.
So what happens if I download the HDR release? Will it look like a bland pos because I have no HDR screen?

Accident Man - 1/10
Shitty low-budget movie where martial arts people are trying to act... poorly... I only downloaded it because of Scott Adkins (he's an awesome martial artist in movies like Boyka: Undisputed.. yes, the movies themselves are silly but the fighting is something else).

Thor Ragnarok
5/10
Went way too far with the comedy.
No emotion, no tension, no feeling of anything being at stake, nothing to offer besides jokes that I didn't find funny most of the time (and I guess well directed action that, unfortunately, gets broken up by more ridiculous jokes every time)
Like someone else said earlier this feels like some parody.

The Cloverfield Paradox - 3/10
I suppose Gugu Mbatha-Raw is doing what she can so that's one thing that maybe sorta half-works. And I found all the arm scenes hilarious
Everything else... oh boy. Dude's Earth random subplot and the final scene were frankly insulting with how shoehorned they felt.

It wasn't "thát" bad? I'd say it was even worse thán thát. I practically started laughing so hard on the first shot of superman being interviewed and his fucking mouth looks worse than fucking fake porno movies
And it gets worse from there.

Justice League - 4/10
Well, it's bad, alright. The movie has many problems, but I think the biggest ones stem from DC's impatience. Instead of using the tried and tested Marvel formula, they wanted to jump start their cinematic universe without putting in due effort, and it shows badly in Justice League.
The movie had to introduce three protagonists and one villain, find time for existing characters, and, obviously, the action and at least some semblance of a story. And it's just 2 hours long. In a way, it's a blessing, considering the quality, but the end result is that, out of the three heroes, one comes as cheap comic relief (worst version of Flash ever, even Arrowverse does him better justice), one is a bland macho (Momoa is okay, though) and the last stays a complete mystery (also quite a bland one, to be honest).
The worst thing about the movie, however, is the bad guy. He had literally no exposition scenes that wouldn't be filled with action at the same time. I'm not a big enough comic buff to know who that is, and I still have no idea after watching the damn flick. His plan is dumb, his ambition is dumb, his story (or what was shown of it) is even dumber, his face looks weird, and his dreadful power is... wielding an... axe? Really? I guess he had his army too, but so does every other villain in these comic book flicks, so that doesn't really count. And he's not even scary. Like, at all. He pretty much kills the entire movie.
Good things? I don't really know. Superman fight scene at the memorial was pretty cool. In fact, Cavill was generally surprisingly cool - I somehow liked his Superman more here, than in Man of Steel or BvS. Other than that, I'm kinda drawing a blank here.
