Bitcoin drops $2,000 in value as South Korea announces planned trading ban

The value of bitcoin plunged 13.5% in the early hours of Thursday after news hit that South Korea is planning to ban cryptocurrency trading.

News of the ban follows the raiding of local cryptocurrency exchanges by police and tax authorities over alleged tax evasion, as one of the key nations driving the demand for bitcoin and other virtual currencies attempts a clampdown.

...

The South Korean-prompted market fluctuation came a day after billionaire investor Warren Buffett said he would never invest in Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies, and predicted the wildly popular assets are in for a fall...

Bitcoin seems like a log-roller competition; you're bound to fall off at any time.

I don't fully understand why these countries would ban the rather than embrace the technology.

- No possible dollars made through taxes or capital gains, potentially missing out on billions of dollars in taxes.
- Enterprising citizens will now just operate, mine or build exchanges in another country, so what are you preventing?
- How is the government losing out here?

governments are trying to protect their big businesses, because people are investing in virtual crypto currencies instead of them
also it is distorting their currencies value, as a lot of people are prospering

let's see who will win

Same reason they want to get rid of cash.
Governments say it's because of money laundering and terrorism but they just want to control people and charge negative interest.

https://www.google.com.au/amp/www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/2018/01/11/major-cryptocurrency-conference-no-longer-accepting-bitcoin/amp/

Quote:
The North American Bitcoin Conference is due to kick off in Miami next week, but anyone hoping to spend their Bitcoin on tickets, costing $1,000 (£738) each, will have to purchase one using traditional credit cards or PayPal.

Bitcoin, the first cryptocurrency, has been suffering from soaring settlement times and transaction fees. There is suggestion that the popularity of coin rivals like Ripple, along with South Korea and China's ongoing crackdown on anonymous trading may be to blame for its recent swings in which see it regularly fluctuate by thousands of dollars across 24 hours.

"Blockchain regulating itself". That's what the banks said in the mid-90s about themselves as well, and it was the beginning of one major crisis after another.

the problem is that transaction fees (that go to miners processing the transactions) are a fraction of a coin - which was negligible a year a go, but of course now even 0,1% of a coin is far too much. and while you can pay less, your payment will take far longer to process.

...and that's the funny part. bitcoin goes up because (amongst other things) people think you can pay for stuff with it or use it for transfers, which makes both a pain in the ass Laughing

Looks like there is a bit of a slaughter going on again.
They're all going down atm, even the obscure coins (usually some obscure ones go up when popular coins go down but this time all are going down)

Nope, he finished paying off his debts:

Quote:
In 2015, 50 filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and restructured his finances, agreeing to pay off $23 million in debt with a five-year plan. Last year, he reportedly finished paying off the $23 million early after receiving some money in a settlement.

Stock market absolutely pummeled yesterday and friday, worst drop in pretty much a decade. So cryptos aren't the only ones getting hit... Gonna have to sell at a loss today I think, too afraid it might be going down further.

Dow Jones lost it's biggest amount of points in its history apparently. (edit: seems this was bs from the newspaper, it's nothing compared to the -23% in 1987)
It was bound to happen, the Dow almost doubled in 3 years time. Trees don't grow infinitely Very Happy

@BearishSun: don't panic (yet Very Happy ). It's the first setback in years.

If you're still in Bitcoin however, that's your own fault Very Happy
BTC currently under 6000 (that's 2/3rd from its value in December)

I'm worried about having to hold the position for months until it recovers. I'm using leverage so I get charged an interest rate daily. Plus it ties up my equity so I wont be able to use it once it bounces back for real...

Always a hard choice losing money, but I'm still in the green overall, just set back a couple of weeks.

I just read that the value loss of all cryptocoins is over 350$ billion Laughing and that's excluding the -20%-25% of yesterday Laughing

@BearishSun: don't tell me you borrowed money to invest? Surprised
If so, sell it all asap!

Yep, 1:10, rate. Meaning for 2000$ worth of stocks, 1800$ is borrowed, 200$ is actual my money Very Happy

Makes it real fast to earn money but need to be careful with situations like these.

EDIT: With indices the rates go 1:400. So if someone had the balls to short-sell on the Dow-Jones on Friday, with only 200$ he could have made 12000$ by now :/ (Or lost it just as easily ofc Very Happy)
