should i grab this game during the sale? is it overall worth it at 50% off, or better to wait for bundle or free giveaway or something? i thought dark souls 3 was pretty good, but maybe a tad too depressing for me.. is this a more lighthearted fun alternative with enjoyable mechanics?

It's an okayish game.
Far away from reaching Souls levels though.

The first few hours of the game were entertaining. But the more you came to the end game, it got more and more hard. That shit went way too far with cheap enemy moves one hitting or stunlocking you. And often you had to move such long ways from the respawn point.

This was the first game in a long time where i had to use cheats (invincible) just to get with it. Laughing

Could have been just an git gud issue. The Souls game are hard too at times, but never were that unfair like here.
All could have changed with the latest patches though - who knows.

TL;DR
Get the isodemo instead.

I think you just suck, Bob.

I think the game did lose part of its charm the more I progressed, but that was because I became so damn powerful that barely anything could have a chance at me anymore. The final boss was an absolute joke too.

Also, this game does not have to compete with the Souls games. I think it's different enough to stand out on its own merits.

Well I wasn't trying to compare really, just give a bit of a benchmark indication of what I've played that seems to be a similar kind of game by way of indication of expectation and my mad skillz.

I think it's worth buying at 50% off. It's a different kind of experience despite following a similar gameplay style. The Surge scifi theme is a welcomed change in scenery. The navigation is quite claustrophobic and the main challenge is traversing these vast industrial areas filled with potentially deadly mobs but pretty fair. The combat has a few improvements as well which I really enjoyed and the game had enough steam for two playthroughs in my case. It's also worth noting that the analog controls are working flawlessly with mouse & keyboard.
I wish the game had a better story and more bosses. The devs also missed a big opportunity by not developing some sort of ranged combat mechanics. But these aren't exactly cons, it's more about player's expectations.

Biggest issue with this game was the poor weapon and armor variety Neutral

There are some cool armors towards the end and a free DLC that adds 10 new weapons.

Still not nearly enough armors in the game IMO... like there should be another lightweight alternative to the lynx at least. Seems that there are some alternatives, but mainly for heavy armor and those no me gusta.

Didn't know about that DLC though.

There's around 5 of each though the bonus provided form a full set means you're more likely to specialize and some of them are difficult to acquire or only acquired later on into the game.

EDIT: Oh yeah the nano core dependency for the last upgrade tier also means you tend to be a bit sparing with what to upgrade. Plus all the other bits to get that far.

The Surge

By the end of December, The Surge had sold close to 500,000 copies, making it one of the company’s “major successes of the year.” Focus Home Interactive teased that “the next phase of the collaboration between [developer Deck13 Interactive] and Focus will be unveiled shortly.”

I tried to play it but after 2-3 hours I just couldn't anymore.
The concept was ok, but everything about it is just so bland and lacklustre.
It's really trying hard to be a sci-fi Souls while completely lacking the atmosphere and level design.
I wish one day From Software is gonna make a sci-fi Souls the right way.

Fight against mad scientist Dr. Rischboter for unique weapons, armor sets and plenty more!

Hardcore Action RPG The Surge will soon be getting brand new content with a new expansion as The Good, the Bad, and the Augmented is coming this October 2 to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Watch today’s Teaser Trailer to get a first glimpse of The Surge’s wild, wild West!

Enter the bowels of the CREO facility and explore an old and abandoned Quality Assurance lab created to push CREO’s tech to the limit. Warren will face Dr. Rischboter’s deadly test chambers that, for some reason, feel like torn straight out of a twisted Wild West TV show!

Fight through the mad doctor’s training rooms and try modifying them yourself for increased rewards by combining up to 4 of the 16 insane modifiers available. At the end of each stage, fight against distinct Challengers, powerful opponents forged from the training scenarios who are equipped with 30 unique new equipment pieces – armors, weapons, and implants - that you can take for yourself!

Mosey on over to Dr. Rischboter’s labs on October 2, when ‘The Good, the Bad, and the Augmented’ comes out for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. New players will also be able to embark on the ultimate Surge experience with the Augmented Edition, which will include the full game and all its DLCs, including The Good, the Bad and the Augmented as well as the previously released A Walk in the Park.

Hah I knew the facility was just a giant theme park all along, well the DLC certainly confirmed it but still. Very Happy

Oh well time to tackle the evil of Doctor Rice Butt then. Could be fun.
