Warner Bros. has made an offer to Christopher Nolan to direct their sci-fi adventure film READY PLAYER ONE. Adapted by Zak Penn from the novel by Ernest Cline (with previous drafts by Cline and Eric Eason), the 20-minutes-into-the-future film follows a teenage boy who enters into an elaborate treasure hunt to win the fortune that was left behind in the will of the creator of his favorite virtual reality game, Oasis. He finds himself up against powerful corporations and competitors who will stop at nothing to get the inheritance. Donald De Line is producing through his De Line Pictures, alongside Dan Farah.
Quote:
Ready Player One apparently has a more pop-culture vibe than Inception; it’s heavy on 80s references, which last I checked was not typical of Nolan’s corpus. But given that Inception was one of Nolan’s two best recent films (the other being, of course, The Dark Knight), it seems like he could do something really cool with Ready Player One.
By the near-future year of 2044, the exhaustion of Earth's fossil fuels has led to longstanding global scarcity and massive aggregation of urban sprawls. While social proximity is at its highest ever, people take refuge in the OASIS, a free-to-use and comparatively idyllic massively multiplayer online virtual reality simulation that easily consumes much of human attention and investment. OASIS' creator James Halliday has died five years earlier. Upon his death, his video will is released wherein he states that his quarter-trillion-dollar fortune and controlling ownership of the OASIS will be awarded to the first person to find an Easter egg he had hidden behind a series of three gates. These gates can only be unlocked within the Oasis environment by three hidden keys. After an initial frenzy, it becomes clear that even the first key is extremely well hidden, and the search recedes into the background of everyday life. Halliday's partner, Ogden Morrow, declines to help with the hunt, and recedes from public life.
Nolan ain't touching this IMO, but I'll keep an eye on what will happen to it now that it has come to my attention.

EXCLUSIVE: Steven Spielberg is set to direct Ready Player One, the highly anticipated project based on the popular sci-fi book by Ernest Cline that takes place in a virtual world. What a coup for Warner Bros, which will bring it to the screen along with Village Roadshow. This is expected to be Spielberg’s next movie after The BFG.
Ready Player One also marks the director’s return to Warner Bros after a 14-year absence.
Zak Penn (X-Men: Last Stand, The Avengers) wrote the latest script after taking over the duties from Cline and Eric Eason (A Better Life). Interestingly, Penn and Cline worked together on the videogame documentary Atari: Game Over and have said to be collaborating on the Ready Player One script extremely well for some time.

Steven Spielberg just put his quarter into the game.
The filmmaker’s adaptation of the virtual gaming epic Ready Player One is officially a go, with plans to have it in theaters on Dec. 15, 2017.

From what I understand the book was particularly heavy on references to Spielberg's films, but (perhaps wisely) Spielberg cut them out in favor of others.
The movie won’t have any of my films in it. I’m not putting myself in this movie…They reference so many ’80s movies. I’m doing the whole pop culture thing. I’m just going to leave myself out of it. I can’t do that. Too self-referential.

it's better than what was shown here since it's stereoscopic 3D and not 2D.. Not sure what shitty VR you have tried.
I'm not a huge fan of VR games tbh, but what you say is just not true, apart maybe that image quality so far isn't totally crisp. Eventually it will be of course, the book and movie takes place in 2044, if we by then don't have VR like this i would be extremely surprised.

The book got huge, probably one of the most well known cyberpunks/sci-fi's as of the last 6 years.. really high ratings on goodreads.. didn't read it though.
personally i love nerdy 80's references etc (big fan of Stranger Things) so i think i will enjoy it.
