Warframe devs Digital Extremes reveal new retro FPS Keystone:

Quote:
Warframe developer Digital Extremes have been working on a new game and it’s called Keystone. This new title is being developed by a second team at the Canadian studio and a closed alpha is starting as early as this week.

Keystone is an FPS that will also include “deck-building strategies” and players will be taken on a journey “through a multi-verse that begins on the starting square of an intriguing, mystical board game”. Players will use cards to increase their powers and unlock weapons. The game is set in a 1970’s “retro-pulp era” which is at least a little different from other free to play shooters around at the moment.

You should be able to as you just need to confirm the registration but I doubt they actually check anything beyond that.

The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.

The Amazing Eternals cancelled 2 months after its debut
Quote:
I’m not sure if this is a record for a high-profile studio announcing, releasing and shutting down an online game, but it probably comes close. The Amazing Eternals – the pulp sci-fi themed hero shooter from Warframe studio Digital Extremes – is being put on hold just two months after launching its beta.

Considering the game was only announced on the 16th of August, with its first public beta starting two weeks later, this is rather quick. But Digital Extremes were surprisingly candid in their short forum-posted letter to the community. The game just wasn’t drawing the crowds needed, and the servers are scheduled to officially close on November 2nd.

“Unfortunately, the game wasn’t attracting players fast enough to support a viable matchmaking player base with the current game design direction, which is the lifeblood of this type of game,” said the statement. “So, with heavy hearts, we’re taking a step back to reevaluate the design and may revisit our intrepid heroes in the future.”

This decision comes in the wake of Warframe’s Plains of Eidolon expansion, which adds to the studio’s stable space-ninja shooter. While sad to see The Amazing Eternals and its pulp sci-fi setting abandoned so early, it’s understandable from a pragmatic perspective: Better to assign development resources to an existing, growing success than gamble on a risky genre after a weak early showing.

Digital Extremes are offering full refunds to anyone who bought the game via their Founders Program, although people should probably move fast on that, as it’s only available for a 72 hour period – less a day, at the time of writing. They do hope to return to the pulp heroes at some point, says the studio, but at the moment there are no plans and nothing to announce. Until further notice, The Amazing Eternals is going back in its box.

Here's an idea. Stop making multi-fucking-player shooters.

What IS it with publishers that think because one or two game genres were very successful, then they absolutely MUST join in and saturate the market? MOBA's, MMORPG's, now MMO Shooters.

How about... go back to making SINGLE PLAYER GAMES. You know.. they type of game people actually PLAY. Or is it too much effort these days to come up with a compelling, and interesting game story?

The 'need' for single player games is currently a hot topic for debate. WTF? It's ridiculous.

Greedy investors salivate over the chance to create the next WoW or Call of Duty or whatever thing has sold shitloads. They don't care about the saturation of the market, I think they just look at the outliers.

A studio cannot easily pitch a single player RPG as a huge success and you can't monetise them with subscription model, loot boxes and bullshit like that.

Fuck them, let them lose money until they learn their lesson.

I mean, the game was literally Hero Shooter + F2P nonsense + CCG. You can't really be more "trendy" as that. I don't know why they even bothered pitching this game. They have Warframe making bank for them. Go making some other genre of games. Do what Blizzard do, make a variety of games so you don't cannibalize your own market.

On the bright side, multiplayer-only games solely base their existence on the various trends of the moment, which is something very volatile and destined to have a short cycle. They usually spawn en masse but at the same time most of them are destined to disappear just as quickly, the new (or rehashed) very cool format arrives until it burns itself again, rinse and repeat.

Single player games on the other hand are free from constraints, they can do whatever they want and unleash creativity (well, not many of them do that but still!), a d̶i̶a̶m̶o̶n̶d single player game is forever. They will always have their strong market and will always sell, though what I really fear is their "bastardization" so to speak, many publISIShers take the single player as a hostage and mutilate it through embarrassing anti-customer practices, unnecessary seamless blending with online elements, and all the various acts of greed in order to combine the everlasting factor of the single player *and* the easy milking typical of the multiplayer world. That's the worst outcome as far as I'm concerned and the real threat. #singleplayermasterrace
