Re-watched the abyss
Crazy how well the films effects still stand up. from a technical standpoint it's brilliant, with amazing scene construction, sets, and even the acting is great (with some truely harrowing scenes)... They built a truely phenomenally believable story environment, that was pitch perfect. So often it's hard to even realise when you're watching an effects sequence because it all fits together so beautifully you never get taken out of the movie and stop to analyse it. The sub chase in particular is great, you can imagine what a horrible cgi synthetic mess a sequence like that would look like in a modern film.

I agree. Practical always trumps CGI (yet at least...) and those scenes among the grandiose "spaceship" surfacing in the end always give me goosebumps. Now, WHERE'S THE GODDAMN BLURAY, JAMES?

Well done CGI just holds up as well. Look at Starship Troopers. Still fantastic!

I think it's about the right tool to do the right job rather than being a cgi sucks kinda deal. Problem is most modern filmmakers just don't know when to use the correct tool, or how to do it properly. A lot of "art" behind filmmaking was lost when budgets went up and cgi became cheaper, of better quality and more accessible and this became the established go-to for effects. You really got something special back in the 80s when filmmakers had a grand vision in their head, but no bloody idea how it was even possible to turn it into a reality on film, meaning they had to get creative and inventive.
Anyway, Seoul station... Not a good movie at all, zombie or otherwise.
But I think it's fascinating. Zombie films are utterly unique in the creative world in that no other genre exists in a scenario where it's own subject matter does not exist in any creative medium. Alien films exist in a world where the concept of aliens exist... Same with vampires, ghosts, monsters, demons, you name it. But in a zombie movie, no one ever knows what a zombie is.

Cameron knows what he is doing, whether it's practical or CGI. Probably because of his background in special effects. (eg Blomkamp also delivers great effects, on a small budget even, and he has a background in VFX).
TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."
"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."
"A tangled tale of sex, violence, power, junk food..."

Good example. I'm not opposing CGI by any means. I sincerely crave for a mature sci-fi film with the Transmorphers-level of ILMbayness.
Just a recent example: BR2049 Spoiler: | CGI team did an awesome job with Rachael, miles better than Tarkin, | but I was totally delighted with the spinner interiors and Spoiler: | JOI exoskeleton |

Blade Runner 2049 8/10. Decent enough. The soundtrack was very amateurish in comparison to the original score.

Les miserables
I'm not much into musicals, but I quite enjoyed it. Some bits dragged a bit, and I really dislike Anne hathaway, but the songs were generally clear, melodic and conveyed the story and emotions very well. Visually it was amazing, and the story was interesting. Also a really really great cast (again, apart from hathaway) that performed wonderfully.

@chiv
I couldn't finish it coz of the atrocious singing.. If you make a musical then get actors who can sing.. at least to some extent..
1) Lenovo Legion 7 (AMD Ryzen 7 5800H, RTX 3080 16Gb, 32Gb DDR4, SSD 1TB +2TB
2) SFFPC (streaming via Moonlight+ Sunshine)

i honestly had no problem with the singing in it. I thought they all did really well, a lot better than a lot of 'professional' popular singers.

Shot Caller - 7/10
A prison-themed movie with non-linear progression, solid cinematography and an excellent Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. He really surprised me here, his best performance thus far and the proof that growing back the hand and suppressing incestuos needs can do wonders to one's morale.
It's something that doesn't reinvent any wheels in terms screenplay and the editing occasionally forces its way, but brings a fascinating perspective that makes you ask yourself the "why on earth would he do that", until it becomes understandable like in a psychologist's wet dream.

shot caller had one of those endings where you smile. you feel it was worth it, and the film actually had direction, and characters had growth, rather than just being a series of random connected scenes that the filmmakers thought would look cool together. it was a surprising little film.

War for the planet of the apes (2017)
~7/10
Not bad but it could have been much better...

Stalker
Finally got around to watching it. It wasn't really for me, it was way too overly artsy for my tastes... The pace too ponderous, the shots often lingering far far too long without any emotional or thoughtful payoff... And ultimately I didn't feel the film really had enough meat or interest to justify its length, I didn't feel like I came away at the end either enriched or entertained. I didn't feel any real payoff, and I really disagree with the must-see status the film has earned.
Some of the character conversations were no doubt interesting and thought provoking, but my main problem is how it was packaged. As I said, too slow and ponderous, and no substantial plot within which to contain the thoughtful dialog, so all were left with is lots of lingering slow shots of characters doing nothing, occasionally broken up with the occasional bit of interesting conversation.
One thing I can say however, was that the locations they picked, and how hey were shot, were fucking so gorgeous you wouldn't believe it. Modern films WISHED they had locations that beautiful - that full of character.
As a film it's nothing special (I would say it even deserves to be viewed as a movie)... As a piece of "art", which is what best describes what this was... it was at times interesting, and beautiful, but just wasn't for me.. It never blew me away or connected with me, like art should.

The Ghost and Mrs. Muir
A really enjoyable film, really sweet and funny and just plain delightful with a great leading cast.
The first half of the film, where the two leads meet and get to know each other, is especially wonderful and hilarious... not laugh out loud slapstick, but just the behaviour and the dialog, it had me in tears... but that might just be my particular type of humor and lightheartedness. Just wonderful, those two characters were such a pair.

Planet of the war of the apes and stuff - 7/10
It surprised me, I was expecting a shitty call of duty ape flick and most of it wasn't the pew pew that the entire trailer was about. Not the greatest movie, it has some flaws but eh... just for not sucking as much as I anticipated it gets a 7.

Brawl in Cell Block 99 - 7/10
I liked Bone Tomahawk. And I like Vince Vaughn's serious parts. This movie delivered drama, great acting, questionable music, bloody brawls with some extra gore, and a satisfying conclussion.
MAG B650 Tomahawk / Ryzen 9 7950X CU -20 5.5GHz / TR PS120SE / Corsair 2x16GB DDR5 6000 CL30 / TUF 3080 OC / Cubase Pro 14

batman vs two-face
pretty good... still MILES better than any of the recent 'serious' wb animated batman movies, and while it was certainly campy and funny, it wasnt quite as hilariously silly as the previous one... it felt this one was a bit more focused on creating a straight foward story, than being all about the outrageous silliness of the original dynamic duo like last time.
but, like i said, still full of SOCKS, POWS and KER-SPLATS with all the silly charm that comes with it.
