Well, all episodes are out.
I'm 5 episodes in and it's good so far. The start is a little slow, but episode 4 is where things pick up, and it's a lot of fun, the cast works well together.

Believable and relatable...Yep, sounds like Call of Duty

The reason I am really looking forward to it is... that there are fewer episodes than normal. Hopefully this means it's tighter than the previous 4 Marvel/Netflix shows. Will watch over the weekend probably.

I'm 3 episodes in and I like it so far. It doesn't go terribly fast, but there are some things I find pretty cool. I like the fact that every character arc feels very much like a part of their own show, even down to lighting and music. It's not like they are taken from their own shows, more like these shows get connected. For example, Jessica's still a PI, doing her usual stuff, Cage is still helping his neighborhood... But the thing is, despite that, they still managed to connect these arcs into a grander whole, and mostly without it feeling cheap or forced. There's almost no shitty writing that makes characters stick together for the silliest of reasons, just so the narrative can continue (looking at you, CW shows). In short: it's an ensemble show but it doesn't feel like one. It's relatively logical and believable and it makes it all the more enjoyable for me.

Watching episode 1.. noticing the weird camera angles.. my immediate thought: "that's gotta be the chick director of Jessica Jones' first 2 episodes"..
I finished watching the 2nd ep, checked the wiki, and yup, it's S. J. Clarkson.
Well, her angles are less gimmicky than on Jessica Jones, and honestly I've missed seeing *anything* out of the ordinary in these shows since JJ, so even if it's not perfectly integrated, it's still a welcome change.
First 2 episodes were ok overall.

Sadly, it started kinda... devolving right after I wrote my last post. It's not exactly bad, but I have some serious issues with it.
Spoiler: |
- what usually gets me through these shows is not the action, but solid characters, with interesting stories and development. In Daredevil that was the amazing Kingpin by D'Onofrio, Bernthal's Punisher (season 2 practically ended for me when his arc was done) and - to a lesser degree - the dynamic between Matt, Foggy and Karen. In JJ it was Jessica and Killgrave. In Cage it was Cottonmouth (again, the show practically ended when he died - the rest was just going through the boring motions with really bad villains and bad action scenes). In Iron Fist it was Ward and his father. And my problem with Defenders is that it fails to deliver on that front. I think there are two main reasons for that: one is that the focus is just slightly more on action, and the other...
- the other is the villains They're just bad. I swear, there wasn't a single point in the entire season when I felt threatened by them. Weaver is trying as hard as she can, but I never felt her character was anything but a glorified CEO. The obviously treacherous Gao already seriously overstayed her welcome. The black guy and the japanesse bear-butcher are just boring cliches with funny accents / languages and almost no exposition. Bakuto would probably be fine - I liked him in IF - but he has no actual role in the story, aside from two or three badly written scenes with Coleen. But the worst one, and by a really long shot too, is Elektra. She's constantly strolling around with a weapon in hand (even when she doesn't need it) and making weird faces she probably thinks are scary... but to say it doesn't work would be a serious understatement The rest of them would probably be fine in a single hero show, but they just don't work for an ensemble one - if you want to gather all your heroes in one place you need a convincing reason, and it's just not present in The Defenders. But Elektra... she's a vision right from the Xena/Hercules times and it ain't a good one
- another of my gripes is directly connected to Elektra (among other things) and that's the fact that NOTHING IS EXPLAINED. They made her such a huge deal in Daredevil season 2, and I expected at least... I don't know, something. Anything. Any reason why that "Black Sky" is (supposedly) so powerful. And why is she different than any other risen guy/ gal ? But there are no answers. There's only a cute lassy strolling around with swords. Usually she she doesn't even seem more powerful than any of the heroes, not to mention all of them together. There's one particular, mood-breaking, funny scene with Jessica that makes "Black Sky" look like a complete fool... and tbh, it could've been the end of the season if they only reacted to what happened then. What's the deal with Alexandra and her "prophecy" about Black Sky? Your guess is as good as mine. What's the deal with the tremors? That one is technically explained, but boy, is it a weak and silly explanation. Why does the Hand want to destroy New York so desperately? Dunno, probably so the stakes at least seem high enough, but there's no logical reason in the story.
- budget constraints are visible despite the lower number of episodes. Some scenes just scream for some CGI or another look at the choreography, but they never got them. Other scenes just don't get shown at all - for example, we never see a duel between Cage and the other black guy, but we do see them stare at that tied up guy for at least two full episodes. Cage and Jessica seem pretty underused in general, during action scenes - which is probably because showing them fight would require more special effects. But at least Danny (or his double) does a slightly better job than in IF. |
There are probably more problems, but these were my biggest ones. All in all... I'm not sure how I'd rate the show, but I don't think it deserves more than a 5.5-6.5 / 10.

Almost 1/3 into the 3rd ep. and the fighting scenes are still shit grade, nearly falling asleep in here. Everything else is ok so far, though.
EDIT: okay, that escape scene was much better. Short and to the point, as opposed to the weak drawn out montages from before

Finished it. Like its predecessors it too devolved into embarrassing status.
For a much anticipated team-up of a bunch of superheroes there weren't enough fights, nor were they anything special. Iron Fist was still the weakest link. Weaver must have asked too much money or something to have so little screen time, overall. The fights in the last episode I could barely follow what was going on. I can go on and on.. but it's not worth my time.
Overall: 6/10
And how it ranks:
DD1 > JJ > DD2 > this > LC > IF
The bad parts of DD 1 & 2 and JJ are worse than the bad parts of this, but they also have parts that are significantly better than pretty much anything in this.

This Black Sky schtick is the dumbest concept from any netflix marvel show by FAR, holy shit
Let's see if the last two eps change that but I'm guessing "no"

What about the comedic villain cliches? Lets talk for 5 minutes, then move away so you can fight my minions!

Done.
Found it slightly better than Iron Fool and part of it was due to this having less eps.
Doubt that netflix will ever put out anything as good as DD1, hopes crushed on the punisher series being anything decent after this.
It's like they (marvel) just don't care anymore, "yeah yeah just put some shit together and we'll make some money"

Finished it as well. It was OK, nothing too special though. It started slow, then got more interesting and then it just kinda stopped being interesting.
PC: Yes. Console: No.

Totally agree with what consolitis said. It's not bad, but not great either. I'm personally waiting for JJ3 and The Punisher.

Ugh, this was so dull. By the end I wanted to scream at the screen "what the fuck is Black Sky?" As expected, Jessica was the only saving grace.
