Game engine issue I would guess, developers themselves said something to that effect when asked about another shortcoming (CPU usage?) I think this uses Ogre 1.x which is getting a bit dated but Ogre 2.x was still in beta when they were nearing the release version for this game and upgrading would require resources they don't have plus it would of course also take a bit of time.
Last game I played that was using Ogre engine was Venetica years ago so yeah the engine is a bit dated alright but I guess it's similar to Unity where you have a pretty good framework for building on but some core issues might be difficult to get around.
(Well I guess it's the same for most game engines when transitioning from a major revision to the next although for Unity and Ogre it's probably a bit more feasible than say converting from UE3 to UE4 midway through development thus why we're still seeing many UE3 games, just a guess though.)
(That and I guess having to throw away or remake 3D models, textures, scripts and other assets or bits of code which might no longer be fully compatible if you were to upgrade the game engine would be quite wasteful.)
EDIT: But I guess that at the moment further development is at somewhat of a standstill or frozen until that issue with their publisher is resolved.
well they cant do anything about it right now :-/ All dev/steam stuff for the game and all uploads of new build was done on bitComposers part - so the devs dont even have the access to do it.
Finished it now after 13h, was good overall; has a low budget feeling somehow but the awesome graphics with its colour pallete plus the very good voice acting compensates; sadly the combat feels cluncky and slow, after finishing van helsing 2 with its fast paced and fun h'n's (and many mobs at the same time on screen), this seemed meh. About the dual worlds, used the shadow world only when i had to, the other time played with the barbarian (tho i did liked alot playing as a wasp too ).
Seems to be back alive and it looks like right now they are transferring IP rights from dead bitComposer to the devs Also they released some beta update fixing derptrollers

I know we have been silent for a long time. But things have changed finally and soon there will be great news coming out. Watch out for Heretic Kingdoms updates coming your way!
And thank you all for your patience with Heretic Kingdoms!

We are waiting for the complete rights transfer yet, though some of them were already done, there are a few still unfinished and we are trying to get those rolling.

We plan to release more extensive information about our plans sometimes after GamesCom. Normally, it would have been already out, but the combination of the summer vacations and upcoming GamesCom delayed our announcement.
But yes, Book 2 will be coming.

Right now , we are in the best condition ever and we are looking for a ways how to improve it further - we don't want to get into the similar situation as with bitComposer ever again. So I would say that the situation is very good with positive perspective. Though we have certain limits arising from being independent developer...
Book 2 will be accomplished. However, I cannot really say when exactly as we currently rework the entire game into new technology (which should be done by end of this year hopefully). We will focus on Book 2 afterwards, but it will take a while yet... But it definitively will be accomplished!
We plan major update to address all performance problems later this year (I hope all will be on track )... It is being ongoing for some months but it requires us to basically rework the entire game, so it is quite exhaustive update as you can perhaps imagine as we have to replace the entire underlying technology.
Gameplay is being also analyzed and we are looking for the ways how to improve it and make more dynamic combat.
So overall - the situation with the rights has been resolved, but there is a lot of work we have to do to make the game better and complete )). But we are on it.
Hey guys!We are out of Shadows, and we owe you an explanation....
But first, we would like to thank each and every single one of you for support, comments and trust you put in Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms. We wanted to answer your every question, request and reach out to you - but unfortunately difficult times kept our hands tight. We deeply apologize for inconvenience and we thank you for your understanding and unceasing support!
Calling the last couple of months turbulent would be an understatement, so let us bring some light to Shadows.
Shortly before the launch of Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms last November our longtime publisher bitComposer Entertainment AG filed for insolvency. The final stages of development got messy suddenly and the situation becomes very ugly with Christmas around corner. The game was launched, picked up by press and enjoyed by many players and reviewers - and your positive feedback pushed us further. We still owned the IP, but the distribution and publishing rights were tied up in the insolvency proceedings of bitComposer Entertainment AG and we couldn’t really do much.
After long negotiations and prolonged legal conflicts we decided to make an offer to buyback all the rights to save the future of Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms. This became our number one priority and due to legal reasons we had to go completely radio silent. In the end not only acquired we the publishing and distribution rights to Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms successfully in early July but also we got the rights to our long running actions franchise Air Conflicts.
Now - with the complete rights back with us - we would like to shareour plans for Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms with you.
First of all here is the answer to the question which certainly interests all of you the most - Book 2 will definitely come! We haven´t announced the release date yet but the development is ongoing. We are also working on fixing bugs and improving the Book 1 now.
As a token of gratitude for all existing players we upgrade the Standard Edition to the Deluxe Edition, which includes the soundtrack and prequel to Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms - Kult: Heretic Kingdoms.will receive Book 2 as a free update when it is released.
We also make the exclusive content with three additional quests (The Tholean Tablet, The Owl Amulet, and The Scorpion King) a part of the Standard release. Those, who have purchased Deluxe Edition, will receive a prequel to Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms, Heretic Kingdoms: The Inquisition. Both editions
And for those who haven’t experienced soul possession and switching between a mortal world and Shadow Realm seamlessly, we offer Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms with a 50% discount - for €9.99 eur / $9.99 on Steam and GOG and the Deluxe version on Steam for €13.49 / $13.49.
So, the peeps with the deluxe edition are screwed. I doubt that Kalypso will honor the promise of free Book 2 for the owners of the Deluxe Edition made by a dead publisher and by the devs.
Kalypso Media and Game Farm have announced Shadows: Awakening—a new action role-player with "real time tactical combat" that marks the next chapter in the Heretics fantasy series.
Due next year, Shadows: Awakening promises players upwards of 40 hours, two worlds, and a new 'Synergy' talent system—all of which picks up where 2014's Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms left off.
Those familiar with the Herectics games will likely know that the series' Book 2 failed to materialise, which is something Awakening addresses head on. Here's Kalypso with more on that:
"[We] are excited to reveal that Shadows: Awakening will not only bring the story of ‘Book 2’ to life, but will also combine it with the original storyline, making Shadows: Awakening not a sequel, but a full and completed experience; improved and re-worked to take full advantage of today’s console and PC technology.
"Additionally, owners of the original Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms will no doubt remember that they were promised ‘Book 2’ free of charge. Kalypso Media and Games Farm are happy to confirm that they will uphold their promise to reward these long-time fans – with all owners of the Steam and GOG versions of Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms eligible to receive Shadows: Awakening as an update to their existing game, completely free of charge."
oh didnt notice ... wa searching for Heretic kingdoms
and IMO not worth of new topic as its basically remaster + 2nd part of game they promised (its even free for previous owners) before bancrupcy of their publisher
